Claire hates Sydney
Sydcarmy endgame light
The light that some of my fellow truthers call the Pride & Prejudice warm sunset light, I call it the Braciole Syd is back light, Braciole final scene light, the under the table light, the hug light. It's the same warm light. I call it the Sydcarmy endgame light now. It's actually the happy heart light, only at different intensities.
At 5x8, when they hugged, it was at its most intense since the beginning. It's not sunset light; it's sunrise and noon or right after, when the sunlight is peaking.
In S1, it started mildly when Syd came back in 1x8 and has been intensifying ever since. (it was completely gone in seasons 3 and 4, Carmy's (and Syd's) darkest hours since they met, and when the sydcarmy scenes moments happened at night).
IMO that warm sunlight not only represents happiness but also Mikey's light shining down on all of them. Mikey is finally resting in peace.
Bonus track: To be fair, C was at some points of S2 and S3 also in that light, but ONLY IN CARMY'S MIND, not in reality, not in a physical form. At the birthday party, she, just like everyone else, was also in that light because Sydney was there and Carmy was with Syd. But in reality, this blue nocturnal light was always C'S light. The warm light he saw her in, in his mind, wasn't real. Syd's light is.
And we all know who the real deal is. Canon.
Carmy and Syd fanart <3
Two stars
Big win for sydcarmy shippers

Coca-Cola = Cocaine, The Hayes Code, and The Bear's S5
During the scene at the party outside The Beef window while they're entertaining guests lined up for The Bear, a whole convo about cocaine comes up.
Chuckie says: "No cocaine."
Ted asks why, and Chuckie says, "Remember what happened last time?" Ted says he does remember. But they say: We're not doing that.
They can talk about doing cocaine. They can even say they have it. But everyone insists you can't do the cocaine. (Cocaine is legal in Copenhagen, btw. More on that later.)
In the first episode, literal Coca-Cola product placement occurs. Syd mentions Coca-Cola by name about her ribs (instead of cola, or soda, or pop, which Computer had just said), and Carmy replies, "Yeah...that's a classic."
Coca-Cola has been used as product placement by the show since S1.
Coca-Cola used to be made with cocaine, or the same leaf as the street drug coke is. It was removed from the product in the 1920s-1930s.
When did the Hays Code begin? The 1930s.
I don't think this dialogue about cocaine is a one off at all (the show rarely does that). Or even being unsubtle about what it's alluding to.
The Hays Code was about censorship. What did the code censor?
Use of profanity, which the show does throughout (Syd is allowed to say "pussy" on screen several times over the course of S5).
Violence and criminality, as well as substance abuse. Which, Cheese makes an entire laundry list of these things all happening at The Berf over the course of the show.
Sexual content. Yes. The show features sexual content. With white couples. Even though it's tame, it's still in there.
The Hays Code also notoriously prevented interracial and homosexual relationships from being portrayed on screen.
Cicero from S2's Omelette, tells Carmy that the odds are against him. He asks Carmy if he wants to hear a story about complete and utter failure. He tells the story about unforced errors. (Cicero will return to his own error and "bad trade" in S5.)
Then Carmy tells Cicero he has been seeing someone.
Cicero: "Gotta tell you, nephew, I don't know if I've ever been so happy to hear anything in my entire fսckin' life. And I say the following with all the love of my heart."
The scene then cuts and goes to Syd in the kitchen with Nat.
Is the show telling us that they were censored? All of the green and red references?
There are well-documented instances of racism and criticism of Sydcarmy from the media itself. They were still trying it leading up to S5 by trying to replace the focus from Syd in the narrative to a white woman who didn't have remotely the same level of importance, despite Carmy saying outright in S4 he couldn't force himself to love Claire. The media is still trying to force it.
Then, the show introduced Marluca, another interracial couple, just to make it very clear what's going on here.
Luca returns in S4 with a Top Gun Ice-Man style entrance, with Marcus talking about watching foreign films and searching for deeper meanings. (Marcus hides all the spoons for himself in S5, in a drawer, not a closet.) Marluca ends up with Luca returning to Copenhagen, a place where the show made it clear Marcus felt safe and free to be himself.
There is also the whole conversation in S5ep1's Soda, where Cicero is talking confessionally to Richie, and he's definitely alluding to something terrible that happened, where he made a "bad trade" that wiped out 3/4 of his income (seasons?).
The whole S2 banter with Syd and Carmy about "friend that's a girl?" looks very interesting in hindsight after the ending of S5, which makes it 100% clear for anyone with eyes and ears, that Carmy was in love with Syd since the moment they meet in S1 and has been throughout the entire show.
Sydney Adamu, who does not have a crush, flipping and playing with her hair, but only in the proximity of Carmen Berzatto, who is not her crush at all
They have suggested so many times that Sydney and Carmy are endgame. Naysayers said they were like siblings. Nope!
The same music plays when Richie feels at peace and makes contact with Jessie. The same way Carmy holds Sydney in his arms and feels at peace. This time they're no longer under the table!
There was a vibe going on in episodes 5-7, people who said, "This isn't that kind of show," "it's a work show." All kinds of love and vibes's happening there.
Riche confirms there is magic in that place, but not just magic; there's love, and it is metaphysical. There were always things happening beneath the surface. And he tells Sydney that love won't let them fail, and right then, Carmy's voice cuts in to bring Sydney back to the present!
There's love here, and lots of it, and Donna helped the viewers see this is not a platonic or brother-sister relationship. This is new, this is the bear, and it rained, so there could be a cleansing and renewal for what is, and Carmy is not leaving to break patterns because there are already patterns breaking!
Carmy realizes why he loved cooking, and it has to do with the colors and vibrancy of the food. Just like he sees Sydney vibrant and in color, and a different shade of green.
Remember, since the beginning, he used the word green as a disappointing adjective or dismissive to Sydney. But he realizes green, a different shade of green, reminds him how this time it can be different.
The panic attack, Carmy explains to him the reason for his anxiety, or Richie's is because he feels dread leaving a safe zone for an unsafe zone. It's not exactly unsafe; it's not familiar, and it's scary to do anything different. At the end, Richie, even with anxiety, leaves the safe zone and enters something unfamiliar, and that includes Jess.
Like for Carmy and Sydney, Claire is familiar with an old shade of green, and Sydney is new and feels unfamiliar but as peaceful as when Jessie and Richie held hands.
I get why the show ended this way, it's a 24-hour timespan after Carmy decides he is leaving, but they gave us enough time to see that Carmy has a realization that breaking patterns can be as simple as changing his to ask Richie about his day, being there for Sydney, and everyone.
Remember how Sydney told him, simply don't be shitty? He can make it as simple as that, different shades of something new, but in that building where a lot of love and magic already exists.
I still have more thinking to do, but that is what i wanted to share.
LOVE WINS ✨
yeah i’m reblogging The Hug again because sydney’s holding onto him like he’s her lifeline and carmy’s cradling her like she’s the most fragile thing he’s ever seen oh god
“the most beautiful thing about (syd and carmy’s) relationship is their true unconditional belief in one another. they see the beautiful things in one another that the other one is not able to witness in themselves. […] in a lot of ways, they saved each other. the piece in the opening episode of season 3, where carmy gets the call about mikey and serves the scallop to syd without ever having met her — there is this invisible tether that was not witnessed by either of them, but it inspired syd, and whether carmy knew it or not, this thing was loved and enjoyed by someone that was birthed from this very traumatic moment. there’s just this beautiful, invisible tether that has always existed and will always exist between the two of them.” JEREMY YOU GET ITTTTT
This is what I mean when I say I ship sydcarmy THIS

there’s something so gutwrenching about the fact that the female characters in obsession have real dreams and wishes but never get the chance to see them realized, while both male characters waste their wishes on short-term selfish satisfaction. they were complex, free-spirited young women who just wanted to create art, and they were destroyed by a man determined to confine them to his superficial perception of them. nikki wanted to be a writer, sarah wanted to be an tattoo artist and now neither of them will get to be anything at all
