normal guy playing wordle: "i really recommend ATONE and GUILT" for starting words
T twice? Tut. I recommend CRUEL SAINT
I did enjoy his work but Pratchett was not actually that deep a thinker, and the Tumblr Treatment of him as one is not flattering.
“Uphold any pedestrian thought as long as it’s stated in a sufficiently humorous way” is a hallmark of tumblr. Not even entirely excluding myself here.
@witchofanguish
"Tumblr Smart" is the way I've come to (grumblingly) think of it — a sort of blind copying of the voice and surface level qualities of deeper thought, without any underlying rigour. Some counterintuitive idea which can "explained" in a single followup sentence and a dense that by knowing this you're smarter than some outside group
I never really thought of his works as even trying to be intellectually deep, right? Clever, certainly - works of pithy phrases and innovative punchlines. But they never aimed to be the kind of books where really deep thought could even find a place to grow. He did not try to enter the genres of Neal Stephenson or Thomas Pynchon.
That doesn't mean I don't know exactly the kind of tumblr/online portrayal of which you speak, I do for sure! Just noting that Pratchett was not that deep of a thinker (complimentary) I guess.
(Though bonus points for the fact that back in the day people got lots of pretty basic facts from books that today you osmosis pretty hard from the generic discourse. He was 10% smarter to a 90's audience than a modern one)
I have no opinion on Pratchett, but I've heard the Vimes Boots Theory of Socio-Economic Unfairness quoted as some genius insight enough to find it quite grating.
I'm not sure this is a tumblr thing so much as an internet thing. Internet Smart. Could be Reddit smart just as easily.
Yeah that is just one of those "straight up wrong" things that get bandied about. It is true enough in some individual instances of a given product, but once scaled up to an actual person's full spending it falls apart immediately. After all, even poor people spend like less than 1% of their income on shoes! Spending an extra 50 bucks on shoes for long term money saving is absolutely in their wheelhouse. It just doesn't actually save people much money, if any at all, because few goods are like this. Rich people dont wear shoes for 20 years lol, and so on down the line of goods - they absolutely spend more monthly. Their wealth comes from higher incomes. The attempt at being clever here (via an inversion of intuition) is an overreach.
I presume we are just using Tumblr as a catch-all for the internet because we are on Tumblr; I am with you actually in thinking of Reddit first, as Pratchett is a bit of an older gen writer. But I have seen it enough here as well for the substitution to land.
I wonder how much the boots thing relies on his idea of wealthy people being the sort of old money landed gentry who have pissing contests about how old their land rovers are. Not to say that those people don’t blow tons of money on other stuff. And, nobody is ever going to “buy it for life $500 jacket” your way into that class, although Barbour coats are really nice
In the US there are definitely that subculture of northeast WASPs who will wear the same sweater for 15-20 years and are proud of it, but the median rich person is a lot more on the consumer side of the lifestyle spectrum, and the specifics of the metaphor fall apart when you’re talking about Balenciaga selling $1500 sneakers
Yeah, Pratchett was talking about a very specific type of Rich Person who are still a thing in the UK, though less so now than when the book came out *33 years ago*.In addition, that type of wealthy person is to some extent aspirational in the UK in a way that they aren't in the US.
Also, the other half of the Boots Theory - that part of being poor is not having enough money at any one time to make larger purchases that would save you money in the long run - just seems straightforwardly correct to me? Like, that's a significant part of being poor. Not the only part, or the cause, or whatever, but it is a very real phenomenon
The Unfairness Theory works on practically every level. Does the 200ml jar of whatever cost twice as much as the 100ml jar? No it does not, it costs about 50% more. If you can't afford the 200ml jar in your budget, the unfairness theory is fucking you. Can you rent a house for less than the mortgage on that house? No you cannot.
This is not a statement about rich people, and you're missing the point terribly if you think that it is. It is a comparison between the spending of a poor person and an adequately well off person. Plenty of people, for instance, do not have the space or resources to run a freezer, and can only freeze what little fits in the ice box corner of their larder fridge. I on the other hand, have that capacity, and so I can save hundreds a year by batch cooking. When Pratchett is talking about wealth, he is talking about the wealth of having a non-leaking roof over your head. The wealth of having more rooms in your house than people who live in it. The wealth that the lower middle class used to enjoy, and increasingly does not in this world.

locked the fuck in get my money up
10% of the time, my cat demands cuddles and scritches. The other 90% it’s this.
I could not enter it, as I had not the key of the door leading to it from the house, but I have taken with my kodak views of it from various points.
These type of details can appear as surprising at first because the Dracula book is set in the late victorian era, giving the expected feeling that everything must be ancient compared to our modern times...
Yet, this is Jonathan's kodak camera:
Once we the readers grab all of these details (starting with this one), and put them all together, it gives the picture of the whole novel being rather futuristic. Considering how one of the elements of the gothic genre is how the past collides with the changes of the present, it's very fitting that Jonathan talks about the ancient english building that the Count wants to move in... With the help of a modern camera.
“We expect things to be ancient, but really, it’s quite modern” - shows picture of a wooden box that would elicit hoarse screaming from GenZ and later.
A thing I found funny, in watches.
So, a very famous and popular watch is the Omega Speedmaster Professional. It went to the moon. It's *still* the only watch rated for EVA activity.
Now, these watches are quite expensive, and this means cheaper alternatives are in demand. Which means that pretty much every watch company you've heard of has made some sort of close copy. This is Timex's:
They've gone for white dials on this model, but it's the same sort of three dial chronograph with a tachymeter bezel.
Now. NASA astronauts give out an award called the Silver Snoopy, which is a silver pin of Snoopy as an astronaut, which they award to outstanding contributions to the safety and success of missions by ground staff. These Snoopy pins are very special, because they've all been to space. Omega won one for their contribution of the Speedmaster Pro.
To celebrate this, Omega put out a Silver Snoopy special edition:
Timex, meanwhile, have a very long history of making watches with Snoopy on, also going back to the days of the moon landing. And so they decided to have the unmitigated cheek of producing a homage to the Omega Snoopy watch.
I don't know why, but this feels like a shot across the bows. "Hey, you may have been to the moon, but fuck you, Snoopy watches is us."

What do you do when a brand puts out Harry Potter merch?
So. Timex. Watch company founded in 1854. Absolutely ubiquitous, I would think most of us have owned one at one time or other. I own at least four myself, and I say "at least" because I just know I have at least one more in a drawer somewhere I'm not thinking about right now. And now they've decided to partner with Rowling, so fuck those guys. But I'm kind of wondering at this stage how much to fuck those guys? Like, I'm not going to buy a Timex anytime soon, that's for sure. But how far does that go? Like, not buy a *new* Timex, but should I boycott second hand Timexes? Vintage ones from before Harry Potter was even conceived of? And for how long should we boycott? I know Timex, this is going to be a limited edition, and it's going away within the year. The way limited edition watches go, for all I know, all these watches are already spoken for and you can't even buy them anymore. So how long is the sentence? Until they stop selling them? Longer? Should I even be wearing my existing Timexes?

have you ever been to a cat cafe? what do you think of the idea?
I worry about having a kind of ‘thinking the stripper likes me’ relationship with an animal
It was hilarious. This particular cat cafe had overhead catwalks (literally) that the cats could get up to, that were out of the reach of humans. And every single cat was up there, looking down at us as if to say "what are these humans doing in our house." We did not attract the attention or company of a cat the whole time we were in there, and as far as I could see, neither did anyone else.
