when you look at the communities or fields that have a Good Ratio of minorities, zero of them ever do it by the means that progressives demand. Capcom and Midway and SNK did not do anything in particular to intentionally make fighting games more welcoming to black people, and black people fucking love fighting games. Japanese anime studios didn't do anything to intentionally make anime more welcoming to Latinos, and Latinos fucking love anime. the fact of the matter is that members of An Identity Class usually hang out with members of the same Identity and you pick up interests from people you hang out with. a bunch of Vietnamese refugees got taught how to do manicures and pedicures by Dusty Coots in the 70s, and they ran nail salons with that knowledge, and then the people they hung out with were mostly Vietnamese and those people were like "huh, nail salon, that's a thing I can do," and you knew people who could train you how to do it. other ethnicities could have done that -- Dusty Coots learned it from somewhere -- but it's not really on the radar.
Jewish people historically did finance because they were some of the only people in the world who didn't erupt into a blood rage at the concept of an interest-bearing loan. so they had a culture of being good at it, and if you hang out with Jewish people all the time you probably know a lot of guys in finance and have several family members in it so when you're thinking about what you wanna do "finance" is one of the first things that comes to mind, you know people who can get you a position somewhere and you know that it's a nice living to make. other ethnicities do it too but non-Jewish people probably don't have nearly as many acquaintances in finance.

sewing and quilting were economically vital but less physically taxing tasks that don't require a lot of movement, so traditionally women did them in the house while looking after the kids. and if you're a girl you hung out more with your mother even after this division of labor wasn't necessary. now that it;s no longer a necessity in any household, the people who still do it as a hobby are people who like doing it, and if you're a woman you hang out with other women who are themselves more likely to have found out they enjoy quilting and knitting and so on.
all of these things are historically contingent reasons + people generally hanging out with members of their own Identity. none of these things are an effort to make something More Inclusive.

This is what internalized ableism does to people. You spend all your life believing that you can't become disabled because you spend so much money & time on your health, trying every possible treatment, supplement, product you can get your hands on — and in the end, the stress from living like that is likely to actually contribute to you developing a disabling illness, and it will have all been for worse than nothing.

I've been really confused by the response to this. By his own admission, it seems like he's been chronically ill his entire life? The article states he was diagnosed with hypothyroidism at 21, which automatically put him at a higher risk of autoimmune diseases, possibly already having one depending on what kind of hypothyroidism it is. He even says
“This is a diagnosis of a condition that started in my body over 20 years ago. Had I not taken care of my body during the past few years, it would be a lot worse,” he wrote in response to one critic. “Health issues will always pop up, no matter how healthy one is.”
"Guy who spends his fortune on medical research to try to cure diseases & promote longevity gets dunked on for having a disease and needing medical assistance" just incredible the hoops people jump through to justify hating a target.
The actual valid criticisms of Johnson is that he hasn't spent his money all that well; this "hypermicro" approach to a macro, structural problem in human biology probably isn't gonna work. But we don't know what is gonna work before it does - props to him for trying, and we would be way better off if the average rich person spent their money on this than the median flashy consumer goods or ruthlessly ineffective nonprofit cause that is much more typical for the group.
