in any given fictional situation, there is exactly one character who is At Fault and every other character involved is a passive victim. media literacy is when you correctly identify and condemn this character
new york freakin city baby
my work week starts on a Tuesday so lately I have been taking great joy in telling my boss "see you next Tuesday". he knows what this means and the main concern is to call him a cunt before he can call me one
In a perfect world we'd have a muppets odyssey movie rn

i do think what gets ignored about carrie as a character is that she’s an incredibly easy target to bully; she’s a chubby, sheltered acne ridden teenage girl who wears frumpy grandma clothes and regurgitates the jesus freak shit her violently abusive mother tells her. she has violent thoughts about her classmates and is uncomfortable to be around. she’s far more interesting being a victim that’s somewhat uncomfortable to be in the head of than a tragic waif. she’s not a martyr, she’s a child and a child who’s been victimised her whole life shouldn’t have to be kind and angelic to be recognised as a victim. suffering teenage girls shouldn’t just be presented on screen as toned down glamorous thin ophelias, suffering teenage girls can be fat and poor and think violently. i do think we need to examine why culturally we need teenage girls to be beautiful and kind to valorise their suffering and treat it as bad
Permission to be mean a little bit 😭
I do urge you all to read the pinned post for general overview information. When I free up a little bit, I want to go back to one of my lesson plans regarding the treatment of Asians in interracial relationships, but it still has quite a few links, an FAQ, and even our CYAB playlist to check out!
This goes for many things but I think... some of you should have more patience and fully comprehend some of the posts/responses on here before quickly responding or asking a question that could be answered by reading the full thing 😭 I'm working on being more concise but I just have so much to say lol and this requires a lot of nuance that I do my best to deliver. I don't want to come across as elitist I understand people have different experiences with reading and how they were taught, but I think letting go of instant gratification and just have patience for the learning process, it would help a lot. Use context clues, and sometimes if we are not online, just by reading the comments and observing how we phrase things, you will get an answer to your question. I distinctly remember one time someone sent in an ask and was like "I felt really uncomfortable by the response that said [EXACT OPPOSITE OF MY POINT] but I could be misunderstanding" like yes, you totally missed the point on that one. It's really frustrating because I spent a lot of time on that ask and others only for someone (and likely more people who didn't send in an ask) to say the exact opposite of what I said even when I was careful by using phrases like "often" "not always" "this does not ALWAYS mean this but." It is very discouraging when answering asks with more detail because if I don't end up adding a bunch of distracting disclaimers then someone will be like "You forgot to mention this!" No, that's not always true. Again, I want to work on this but it's a two way street, you know?
Sometimes, people send in very well-meaning asks that are along the lines of "Hey can you tell me how not to make an Asian character racist or orientalist? What is everything I should avoid? Thanks!" If it was something we could list out in quick bullet points in a single post, why would we have a whole blog dedicated to this 😭 It's a really overwhelming question and it's like, well where do we even start? That's why Mod Teto is often urging for more specific questions so we can give you a more tangible answer because there's nuance in many of these situations lol. If you can search it up on the internet and get a very clear cut answer, then maybe it's not really a question you have to ask us. Yes, you can have shy Asian characters. Yes, you can have smart Asian characters. But do you tend to make your Asian characters remain in a certain niche? Why is that? Is there a wall or discomfort that stops you from making Asian characters take up space in other fields like athletics? A lot of what we try to do here is examine biases, and that also requires patience.
You don't have to apologize or be upset with yourself if you have done or said these things already, now you know! It's not worth it to sit with the frustration for too long, I wanted to put this out here to let you all know for future interactions with us and other blogs with similar goals
I wish you can hug me and say everything’s going to be okay
Girl we are fucked
oh log we’re really in it now
regarding my last reblog I honestly can't believe Greer is forging ahead with this spider book, considering they took the criticism of Sir Cameron obviously very hard. they could have avoided backlash by...not doing the racism again. it is a prettyyyyy simple fix. but they're obviously in no mood to change their racist writing and so, they're gonna get those waves of criticism which obviously hit them quite badly where it hurts.
and the thing is, I don't think it's hard to write a lowbrow fantasy novel without transmisogyny, racism and fatphobia. no one is expecting a world class novel from someone who seems to be using their Tumblr followers on their cat blog as beta readers. Sir Cameron and Prince Procello (?) are both books that are not to be taken very seriously by design. they're savvy little gay romances in a rules-lite fantasy universe largely inspired by cartoon and video game characters greer wants to fuck. and that's fine. but it's a somewhat low bar, quality wise, and somehow they still fucked it up by just adding like a really pointless amount of bigotry.
like honestly. what are we doing.

i hadn't really like. Truly thought too hard about that author's spider-fucking book so i wasn't putting individual pieces together but thanks to things people have reminded me of on that last post in this book i've realized we've got:
dark-skinned spider centaur love interest who's part of a cannibalistic incestuous spider race where the females are larger bc haha big hot abusive women
which means we've got a bunch of dark-skinned women who are incestuous sexual abusers of the males of their species
white protagonist love interest who is based off griffith from berserk looks-wise but i have also been told that character is like. a serial rapist. so maybe not the best choice
white protagonist leads dark-skinned love interest around with a rope noose around his neck
author makes 'jokes' about the dark-skinned love interest with a specifically "proud curved nose" being objectified
the sexual dynamic between the two MCs is supposed to be the dark-skinned love interest finally getting to be the rough dominant top to the pretty boy white twink protagonist
white twink protagonist is also a genocidal colonizer which i guess is supposed to be funny
@deep-sea-horror yeah
oh right i wasn't able to get the second half of that comment in the screenshot. so here it is
radioactive levels of tumblr racism here in the screenshots. and we're supposed to act like this is fine. because ohhh poor smol queer indie traditionally published bean 😢 how dare we criticize the Progressive Race Scientist 💔 god. my fucking god.
it's vile how this shit is handwaved repeatedly on a pretty big chunk of the tumblr demographic out of a sense of fear that any serious criticism of this image would be seen as kinkshaming. as though interrogation of the author's obvious fetish for bestial noticeably tanned (yet still repeatedly white) violent women would be somehow morally wrong in some way. as though racism should be ignored as soon as it makes someone horny.
the image itself is especially galling. tiny fragile pale delicate genocidal colonizer twink with his skin as white as his hair (the design of which is directly based off an anime rapist who infamously sexually assaults a main character who is a woman of color on screen) holding the rope leash- so, a noose- of a deliberately muscular, darker-skinned animal man who is directly referred to by the white author as a "dog" who is "well-trained enough" to "retrieve [his leash.]"
the fact that, despite this racist art, and the racist caption, and the racist setting, and the previous racism of the author, people are still going to purchase this book, is a massive indictment against this website's (white) userbase as a whole.
something incredibly funny about dnd trying to get in on the cute animal of the week trend with a popular raccoon and, because this is how dnd works with regards to animals, doing so by releasing a statblock so you can fight and kill it
putting "don't you dare" in the XP count but still explaining how one would go about fighting jimothy the raccoon, a random animal with a spinal condition, is killing me
really specific trope i like that i feel like can only be explained in a diagram
Oh baby fight
