have you talked at all about the animorphs going through a groundhog day/new game plus kind of time loop before? it's one of my favorite tropes / aus.
⢠Jake wakes up.Ā Itās a Southern California day like any other: sunny, 70, chance of aliens.Ā He showers, slumps downstairs, pours himself a bowl of Frosted Flakes.Ā Does his best to ignore the controller sitting across the table and staring at him.Ā Brushes his teeth.Ā Catches the bus.
Jake goes to Homeroom.Ā Jake goes to Algebra.Ā Jake goes to French.Ā Jake goes to U.S. History.Ā Jake goes to lunch.Ā Jake goes to Remedial English.Ā Jake goes to Biology.Ā Jake goes home.
āRemember,ā Marco says, as theyāre heading out.Ā āTonight.Ā The usual place.ā
Jake sighs, nodding.Ā It seems like thatās all they do these days, meet and try to talk their way up to going on the next mission.
Heās tired.Ā Theyāre all tired.
Maybe none of them more than Rachel, who is already grinding her teeth when she walks through the door.Ā āI canāt tonight,ā she says.Ā āMy mom needs me to babysit Jordan and Sara again.ā
āSeriously?ā Marco asks.
Jake knows why ā this has been happening a lot lately.Ā Itās unlike Rachel to put off a mission, and yet.Ā Itās the yeerk pool.Ā None of them want to go back, even her.Ā Even if it means destroying an entire kandrona shipment Erek has pointed them toward.
But Jakeās in charge.Ā Itās Jakeās job to say āFine.Ā Weāll try again tomorrow.āĀ And so he does.
⢠Jake wakes up.Ā He showers, he eats his sugar-covered corn, he does his best to hope he hasnāt caught the wrong kind of attention from the thing that looks like Tom.Ā He leaves for school.
Algebra seems like itās been getting easier lately.Ā In French, he finishes a sentence correctly the first time the teacher prompts him.Ā Maybe heās been getting better at balancing it all.
Or maybe itās just been forever since theyāve been on a real mission.
āI canāt tonight,ā Rachel says, when theyāve barely started the meeting.Ā āMy mom needs me to babysit Jordan and Sara again.ā
Marcoās response is sharp and sarcastic.Ā Jake curls his head forward, pressing it against his knees.Ā He gets why Marcoās annoyed.Ā This keeps happening.
āJake?ā Cassie asks softly.
He lifts his head.Ā āIf this happens again tomorrow, we might need to plan to go without you,ā he tells Rachel.
Ā«That makes no sense,Ā» Tobias says sharply.Ā Ā«We canāt go without our strongest fighter.Ā»
āTomorrow.āĀ Jake can hear the tiredness in his own voice.Ā āWeāll make a decision tomorrow.ā
⢠Jake wakes up.Ā He goes to school.Ā He sits through classes, through lunch.Ā He confirms with Marco that theyāre still just meeting in Cassieās barn for tonight.
āI canāt tonight,ā Rachel says.Ā āMy momāā
āWe know.āĀ Jake speaks more sharply than he means to.Ā Heās just.Ā Heās tired.Ā It feels like he hasnāt slept in weeks.
āSheās just really busy right now,ā Rachel mutters.
Ā«Yeah, dude.» Tobias glares, or maybe he just looks Jakeās way.Ā Ā«Chill.Ā»
āWe go tomorrow,ā Jake says.Ā āNo matter what.Ā Tomorrow.ā
Marco salutes.Ā āTomorrow it is!ā
⢠Only they donāt go the following day.Ā Jake suggests it, and the others all shout him down.Ā Itās just one night, Rachel and Tobias keep telling him, itās just for now.Ā The kandrona shipment can wait one more night, Ax says.Ā Cassie suggests they all just take a breath, take a break.
⢠Jake messes up.Ā They donāt go the next day either, and this time itās Jakeās fault; he fell asleep during what felt like the worldās most repetitive History class, and got detention.
āYou doing all right?ā his dad asks, picking him up after school that day.
āYeah.āĀ Jake stares dully out the car window.Ā āYeah, Iām fine.ā
Jake can tell, by the change in tone, that theyāve gotten to the real reason his dad started this conversation.
āAnd Tom.āĀ Steve clears his throat.Ā āHas he seemed... off to you, lately?ā
Yeah, Dad, he seems like heās been replaced by a fucking alien, thanks for asking.Ā Jake wants to slide off his seat and onto the floor.Ā He wants to curl up in the footwell of the car and cry himself to sleep, right there on the spot.Ā āI donāt know,ā he says.Ā āHe seems fine to me.ā
⢠The following day, Jake gets to the barn early.Ā He doesnāt like going on this mission without Rachel, but thereās a difference between waiting for a day and waiting for... he doesnāt know how long.Ā Several.Ā Itās been forever.
āHey.āĀ Itās Cassie, standing in the door.Ā āYou ready to go tonight?ā
āYes.āĀ Jake pushes to his feet.Ā āYes.Ā Even if Rachelās busy, we need to get this over with.ā
Cassie frowns.Ā āRachel didnāt mention being busy.Ā I know sheās had to babysit a lot lately, but she shouldnāt need to tonight.ā
Jake snorts.Ā āNo kidding, sheās had to babysit a lot.ā
The doors of the barn swing open.Ā Rachelās there, Marco trailing behind.Ā Two raptors land in the rafters, one after the other.
āOkay,ā Jake says.Ā āI talked with Cassie, and we go ahead no matter what.ā
āI canāt tonight,ā Rachel says.
āWow,ā Jake mutters, āhow did I know that was coming.ā
He stares back.Ā āNo one else is getting frustrated with this?ā
āMy momās just really busy right now.āĀ Rachel crosses her arms.
āWhen is she going to get un-busy?āĀ Jake knows he sounds mean.Ā He knows it.Ā But it feels like theyāve been having this conversation since... Since... He doesnāt know when.
āDefinitely by this weekend sheāll be fine,ā Rachel says.
āWeekends.āĀ Marco sighs, flopping his wrist against his forehead.Ā āI remember what those were like, back in the days of yore.āĀ Heās overdoing it, trying to break the tension.
āWhat...āĀ Jake frowns, a sudden uneasiness saturating his stomach.Ā āWhat day is it today?ā
āItās Thursday,ā Rachel says.Ā āSo the weekend starts tomorrow.Ā I promise, itāll be fine.ā
āThursday.āĀ Jake looks at his watch, not that thatās any help.Ā āI couldāve sworn it was...āĀ He trails off, looking into space.Ā Heās never sure what day it is anymore.Ā And yet, that answer doesnāt sound right āĀ this whole thing doesnāt feel right āĀ for some reason he canāt put his finger on.
Ā«Letās just go tomorrow, yeah?Ā» Tobias says.Ā Ā«We canāt go without our strongest fighter.Ā»
āYeah,ā Jake mutters.Ā āYou keep saying that.ā
⢠Jake wakes up.Ā He doesnāt feel rested, but at least he doesnāt remember dreaming.
āJake?ā his mom asks over breakfast.Ā āHave you seen Tom this morning?ā
Jake shakes his head, hoping thatās not a bad sign.Ā He leaves for school.
āRemember,ā Marco says, as theyāre heading out.Ā āTonight.Ā The usual place.ā
Itās not like Jake was at any risk of forgetting.Ā This is their third? fourth? meeting in a row.
He goes to Cassieās barn.Ā āI canāt tonight,ā Rachel says.Ā āMy mom needs me to babysit Jordan and Sara again.ā
āI thought you said sheād be free by Friday,ā Jake points out.
āYeah, and todayās Thursday.āĀ Rachel crosses her arms.
āIt canāt be Thursday, yesterday was Thursday,ā Jake snaps.Ā āWeāre already at the weekend.ā
āWeekends.āĀ Marco sighs, flopping his wrist against his forehead.Ā āI remember what those were like, back in the days of yore.ā
Jake stares at Marco.Ā His whole brain is tilting, spinning, horizon losing its contours.Ā Itās not unease heās feeling.Ā Itās dread.Ā Panic.
āHey Ax?ā Jake says, voice very small.
āN...āĀ He takes a breath.Ā āNever mind.ā
⢠Jake wakes up.Ā He checks the level of the Frosted Flakes.Ā He shouldāve gone through the box, and yet...
āHey Mom,ā he calls, still inside the pantry.Ā āDid you replace these lately?ā
A shadow falls over the door.Ā Tom is blocking the opening, staring hard at Jake.Ā āWhy are you asking that?ā
Jake tries for a natural smile.Ā āJust wondering.Ā Did Mom ever find you?Ā She was looking for you yesterday.ā
āWait.āĀ Tomās eyes narrow.Ā āWhat?ā
The shelf impacts Jakeās lower back, which is how he knows he stepped back.Ā āJust wanted to make sure that...ā
āJake?ā his mom calls.Ā āYou said my name?ā
He grabs the cereal box and runs.
When he gets to school, theyāre still on integer-valued polynomials.Ā And conjugating ātournoyer.āĀ And Chumash-Mexican alliances.Ā And split infinitives.Ā And the krebs cycle.
āRemember,ā Marco says, as theyāre heading out.Ā āTonight.Ā The usual place.ā
And for the first time in his life, Jake doesnāt even bother to go.
⢠Jake wakes up.Ā Jake stays in bed.Ā Heās tired.Ā Heās tired, and heās starting to understand whatās happening here.Ā If his mom asks, heāll fake sick.Ā But either way, fuck school.
⢠Staying in bed gets old fast.Ā Jake spends an entire day actually teaching himself the one-hour lesson on polynomials.Ā And then another day on regular conjugation of multipart verbs.Ā And then two more, one each for the Chumash and Mexicans.Ā And then skips another school day, because he doesnāt give a damn about infinitives, and then finally the krebs cycle.
⢠He hasnāt been on an Animorphs mission in...
A while.Ā Itās been a while.
⢠āIām telling you, if you even tried kidnapping Spider-Man and adding him as a Robin,ā Marco says over lunch, āthen Aunt May would just go out, buy a shotgun, and cap Bruce Wayneās ass.ā
Jake stares at him.Ā Heās been letting this conversation wash over him, but now... āDonāt you ever get sick of talking about this stuff?ā he asks.
Marcoās face does something complicated.Ā It takes less than a second, before his smile is back in place.Ā It has an edge now.Ā āItās not like we can talk about anything real here, you absolute gravy stain,ā he says through his teeth.
Jake nods.Ā He pushes to his feet.Ā And then he stands up on the table.
āMarco!ā Jake says, and the cafeteria falls silent.Ā āMarco Sant-Alonso Grant Dominguez, will you marry me?ā
Thereās laughter, and then thereās whispering, and then thereās booing.
And then thereās detention, for breaking the schoolās policy against homosexual conduct.
Itās something different, anyway.
⢠Some days he walks out of the house before anyone else is up. He goes flying, and spends the day with Tobias and Ax. He morphs wolf, runs out to find Toby, and spends the day there instead. He attends a Sharing meeting, walking uninvited to its back room and noting as many faces as he can before they drag him back out.
⢠Maybe itās not fair to everyone else, Jake thinks on some days.Ā Maybe they deserve to live and grow.Ā But maybe they deserve to not be at war, and maybe theyāre not, not really, not while theyāre in this holding pattern.
⢠āDetention, young man,ā Chapman says, because Jake hasnāt bothered to go to English class for quite a while now.
Jake whirls around, staring him down.Ā āDid you just try to put my host in detention, Iniss 226?ā he demands.
Chapmanās face freezes.Ā His whole body is caught between one motion and the next, mouth hanging halfway open.
āThatās what I thought,ā Jake says.Ā And then he spins back around and walks out the door.Ā Heās laughing by the time he reaches the sidewalk.Ā Laughing uncontrollably, laughing with stupid little snorts mixed in.Ā Laughing like he hasnāt since...
A while.Ā Itās been a while.
⢠Jake goes joyriding in his momās car.Ā Jake goes joyriding in a stolen Bug fighter.Ā Jakeās lonely, but Jakeās been lonely for a long time.
⢠āMy name is Jake!ā he announces, the next time he feels like standing on a cafeteria table.Ā āAnd Iām an Animorph!ā
āHey Jake?ā Jakeās mom says over dinner one night, the way she often does.Ā āCassie called a few times.Ā She sounded worried about you.ā
Jake stirs his food (heās so so sick of stuffed cabbage), not looking up.Ā āDonāt worry,ā he tells his mom.Ā āSheās annoyed because Iām not planning our ten thousandth attempt to bring down the Yeerk Empire.Ā But it started to feel pointless after a while, you know?ā
His dad asks if this is something to do with a video game.Ā His mom asks if he and Cassie are dating.Ā His brotherās face is blank, twisting into horror.
Jake throws Tom a wink, and waits for the explosion.
It never comes, to his surprise.Ā Instead Tom stares at him in silence for the rest of dinner, not eating, not talking.
The yeerk must be āĀ and Jake laughs aloud at the thought āĀ planning on doing something about it tomorrow.
⢠Jake wakes up.Ā He wakes up, because he canāt breathe.
Thereās a hand pressed over his nose and mouth.Ā Thereās a two-hundred-pound human body pinning him to his bed.Ā Thereās a knee jammed into his diaphragm.Ā Any one of these could account for Jakeās drowning-man struggle, clawing at Tomās wrist as his body starves for air.
āDonāt worry.āĀ Tomās voice is silky-low in his ear, and Jake doesnāt care because THEREāS NO AIR.Ā āIām not going to kill you, you little shit.Ā Then Iād be alone in this loop.ā
He lets go, sitting back.Ā Jake sucks in a breath so violently his whole chest arcs off the bed.
Jake sits up.Ā They stare at each other.
āHi,ā Jake says at last, hoarse.Ā āMy name's Jake.Ā You are?ā
The yeerk doesnāt try anything cute, like claiming to be Tom.Ā āArdek 5851.Ā Sub-Visser Two-Oh-Nine.ā
Jake nods.Ā āYouāve been in the loop... how long?ā
āFor me, this is the eighty-sixth time itās been Thursday, May tenth,ā Ardek 5851 says.Ā āWhat about you?ā
Jake has no freaking clue how many days itās been since he noticed, and he has a nasty suspicion it took him at least a week to notice at all.Ā He settles for shrugging.
āFine.āĀ Ardek sits Tom upright, cross-legged on the end of Jakeās bed.Ā āOn to the elephant in the room.Ā Youāre helping the andalite bandits.Ā And so is Cassie Moises.ā
Jake is aware that heās the stupidest person ever to live, thanks.Ā Thereās no need to point it out.
āWell?ā Ardek raises Tomās eyebrows.Ā āI gave you my name and rank, midget.ā
āDonāt call me that,ā Jake snaps.Ā He shoves to his feet, fists clenched, chest aching.Ā āAnd yeah, Iām helping them.ā
Ardek snorts loudly.Ā āClearly theyāre not helping you, or else you wouldnāt still be here.Ā What, no Time Matrix on loan for their lowly human ally?ā
Jake shrugs.Ā He has to play this carefully.Ā The variables have changed overnight: now his survival is likely to hinge on that of this creature.Ā This is bad.Ā āMaybe I like it here.Ā Maybe I havenāt bothered telling my andalite contact, because I don't think it's worth the trouble."
Ardek squints at him.Ā āIf I didnāt know you, Iād think you were telling the truth.Ā Since I do know you, midget, I know youāre telling the truth. Damn.āĀ He laughs, shaking his head.Ā āI mean, I knew you were fucked up, because Tom knows youāre fucked up.Ā But this...āĀ He shakes his head again.
āSo.Ā Guess weāll go back to how it was, then.āĀ Jake shrugs again.Ā āYou do your thing, and Iāll do mine.ā
āJake.āĀ The name seems like a deliberate choice.Ā āJake, you know we canāt go on like this forever.Ā Work with me, kid.Ā If you donāt want out, what do you want?ā
Jake lets his gaze flick to Tomās body, and then back up to his eyes.Ā āI think you know.ā
Ardek grimaces.Ā āFine,ā he says.Ā āAgreed. He sucks as a host anyway.Ā But you canāt let him go blabbing the truth after I give him back.Ā And you let me go my own way."
"Thereās this bod Iāve had my eye on anyway, this local cop whoās also a ranked weight-lifter.Ā Shouldnāt be too hard to grab.ā
āI wish you hadnāt told me that,ā Jake murmurs.
āHey, you get Tom, I get Officer Jenna Richards.Ā Everyone wins.ā
āJust...āĀ Jake presses his index finger and thumb to the bridge of his nose.Ā āTell me what you've already tried, to end the loop."
⢠When they part ways, Jake doesnāt go to Ax.Ā The part about not wanting to trouble him was true.Ā And after their little trip to the Cretaceous, Jake is pretty sure Ax has no idea what heās doing when it comes to sario rips.Ā Instead, Jake finds Erek.
He doesnāt start by asking about time loops, but with āYou remember when we helped you guys fix the pemalite ship?ā
Erek nods, because of course Erek remembers.
āOkay,ā Jake says.Ā āSo this is going to be one hell of a return favor, but...āĀ He smiles weakly.Ā āHow do you feel about breaking the space-time continuum?ā
⢠Jake wakes. Ardek is sitting on the end of his bed again.
āRise and shine, little bro!ā he says.Ā āWhoās ready for some breakfast?ā
Jake groans, rubbing a hand over his face.Ā āIām not your brother.ā
āAnd Iām guessing Tom got better sleep on the last-ever May ninth than you did.āĀ Ardek grins at him.Ā āSo?ā
āMy contact didnāt get an answer right away.Ā Iām supposed to come back.ā
āSo Prince Whoeverthefuck can start running the calculations again?Ā From the top?āĀ Tomās fists are tight on the bedspread.
āYep.āĀ Itās Jakeās turn to grin obnoxiously at him.Ā āSo Iād better get over there, donāt you think?ā
Ardek flips him off, and stalks out of the room.
⢠Erek starts from the top, every morning.Ā Usually after an hourās worth of exhausting the same suggestions he made yesterday, with Jake shooting down each one at ever-increasing speed.Ā Erek hits a dead end, every evening.Ā And he gives Jake something to memorize and recite back to him the following morning.
⢠Jake comes home to find Tom splayed out on the floor, the whole room stinking of strawberry schnapps. Ardek is vague-eyed, loll-headed.
āWhat are you doing?ā Jake says slowly.
āLivinā...āĀ Ardek hiccups.Ā āLivinā like thereās no tomorrow.ā
Jake considers.Ā And then he sits on the floor next to Tom.Ā āStrawberry schnapps, huh?ā
āYep.Ā Dadās got shit taste.ā
āHeās not your dad.ā
āThank god for that.āĀ Ardek hands over the bottle.
Jake takes it. āNo tomorrow, right?ā
Ardek fumbles behind himself in the pantry, comes up with cooking sherry this time.Ā āNo tomorrow.āĀ He toasts with it.
Jake sips the schnapps.Ā Yep, even more awful than it smells.Ā He sets the bottle on the floor, grateful when Ardek doesnāt push the issue.
āSo howās the worldās slowest war-prince doing for you?ā Ardek asks.
āāSlowā is about it.āĀ Jake doesnāt sip again.Ā āWhy canāt you ask any of your fellow sub-vissers for help, while weāre waiting?ā
Ardek snorts.Ā āI wish.Ā Cooperation within the Empire isnāt...āĀ He trails off.Ā āIt isnāt.Ā Period.ā
āSounds like a pain.ā
āOkay, so.Ā You got Visser Three, stomping around on his itty-bitty hooves like he hung the stars and we should all be kissing his ass.Ā You got Visser One, whose deal is...āĀ Ardek blows a raspberry.Ā āI donāt even know.Ā Scary-ass lady.Ā And you gotta pick one or the other or else your ass is grass.Ā But youāre stuck either minioning for Visser Three, or betting everything on some alleged revolution that innāt even going to come through ācause...āĀ He hiccups again.
Jake chuckles.Ā āSounds like politics.ā
āYāknow, every time I try to tell people my host used to live next door to Visser Oneās host, they think Iām making it up?ā Ardek says.Ā āThat Iām trying for, like, the position of kissass-in-chief.ā
āWould you take it, if you could?ā Jake asks.Ā He takes another wincing sip.
āWhat, a vissership?āĀ Ardek slurs the word, stopping to work Tomās mouth when heās finally got it out.Ā āIn an instant.Ā An instant.Ā It means being safe, being visser.Ā It means not having to kiss up anymore.Ā Itād mean no longer having to deal with this...āĀ He flicks Tomās finger against his temple, like getting rid of a bug.Ā āAnd getting a nice, quiet, voluntary host instead.Ā Iāll kiss all the ass in the world for that.ā
āI guess I never thought about it that way before,ā Jake says quietly.
Ardek snorts.Ā āLike youāre not kissing the ass of some war-prince, just to be allowed to be in the war at all?ā
Jake hums noncommittally.Ā Sips again.Ā Wonders if he should try to hide the bottles before his parents get home.
Let them ground Tom.Ā Itās not like it matters.
⢠Erek makes little progress.Ā Ardek comments on it constantly, but Jake still wonāt let him come along to meet this contact.
⢠Jake wakes.Ā This time, itās because heās been dumped out of bed and onto the floor.
āHey.āĀ Ardek crouches next to him, straightens up, bounces on the spot.Ā āHey, hey, asshole.Ā I tried your idea, man.Ā I tried your brilliant damn idea of, of, asking our technician about time loops.ā
Jake sits up slowly.Ā āAnd?ā
āI died, man!āĀ Tomās voice rises into a screech.
Now Jake scrambles to his feet.Ā āYou died.Ā Yesterday.Ā Last loop.Ā Youāā
āThose utter grass-munchers reported me, said I was losing the plot, and of course they didnāt want to deal with me, weāre already over budget and understaffed, yadda yadda, so they shot me!āĀ Ardek is still bouncing, wide-eyed, manic.
āThey shot Tom,ā Jake says.Ā āAnd you both died.ā
āYes, you stupid human, he died too!āĀ Ardek makes a dismissive gesture.Ā āIāve done the drills, weāve all done the drills, on how to get out of the skull in an emergency, but all the blood was coming out everywhere, and all the circuits were shutting down, and the stupid host was screaming, and...āĀ He wraps both arms around himself, shuddering.
āIām sorry that happened to you,ā Jake says slowly.
Ardek punches him in the arm.Ā āDamn straight youāre sorry.Ā āWhy donāt you try asking your peopleās technicians?āā he says in a truly awful imitation of Jakeās voice.Ā āāSee if they can help.āā
Jake gets a hand around Tomās bicep.Ā Gently pulls Ardek down to sit on the edge of the bed.Ā Ardek curls forward, both hands pressed over his face.
āYou people arenāt even worth it, you know that?āĀ Ardek speaks through Tomās fingers.Ā āYou donāt have blades, you fall over all the time, and pretending to be you involves wasting so much time on the most inane crap...āĀ He lifts his head.Ā āYou know, if youād take one tenth the time and resources and brainpower you people spend on this shitāāĀ He plucks at his shirt hem āĀ "and ditch the clothes, youād be shuttling to deep space and outgunning the andalites by now.ā
āProbably,ā Jake says.Ā āWhy are you here, then?Ā If weāre such a crappy species.ā
āNo choice,ā Ardek says dully.Ā He flops back onto Jakeās bed.Ā āIf you try to not go to whatever shitty backwater planet they assign you and recruit the locals, you end up...āĀ He shudders again.Ā āLike me, yesterday.ā
Jake never expected to feel this much sympathy for a yeerk.Ā Much less the one currently puppeting his brother.Ā āYou could stay,ā he offers.Ā āIn the loop.Ā Just... hold.ā
Ardek rolls onto his side.Ā āI,ā he says slowly, āhave not eatenāā He pokes Jakeās leg.Ā āA single drop of kandrona.Ā In one-hundred forty-three fucking days.Ā I was scheduled to go first thing, the morning of May eleventh, but nooo.Ā I havenāt talked to my friends in that long either, because I canāt exactly pick up the phone and do a check-in, now can I?ā
Another angle Jake has never considered before.Ā āDo you even... want a host at all?ā he asks slowly.
āBeats being stuck in the kandrona tank twenty-four-seven,ā Ardek says.Ā āI donāt like eating that much.ā
Thereās something in there, something about all the yeerks feeling like there are only two choices and both suck, that... Jake has a half an idea.Ā Less than.Ā He has to run it by Cassie, and then...
And then have Cassie forget the whole thing, over and over again.
āWhy is this happening to us?ā he asks Ardek, flopping next to him on the bed.Ā āI mean, why us?ā
āExtremely localized sario rip went off in the basement,ā Ardek says immediately.Ā āCaught us both sleeping, sent us into a loop thatās spiraling slowly down until we both die.Ā Like that... Jacobās Ladder movie.ā
Jake hums.Ā Heās already lived that one out, in Brazil, and heās pretty sure this isnāt it.Ā āWouldnāt it have collapsed when you died, then?ā
āYeah.āĀ Ardek sighs.Ā āFor the longest time I thought it was something you andalites did to us, but that doesnāt explain why youāre here.Ā What about you?Ā Any thoughts?ā
āCrayak.āĀ It slips out almost before Jake means to say it.
āCosmic being.āĀ Jake stares at the ceiling.Ā āDoesnāt like me.Ā Would pull crap like this, most likely.ā
āThen why am I here?ā Ardek whines.
Jake doesnāt answer.Ā And then he figures thereās no harm in answering.Ā āI think... he wants me to make a choice.Ā The same one heās been pushing me toward for a long time now.ā
Jake rolls over enough to look Ardek in the eye.Ā Enough to look into Tomās eyes.Ā āIām working with the andalites.Ā Youāre a controller.Ā Figure it out.ā
Then he stands up, and starts getting dressed for school.Ā One more round of infinitives wonāt kill him, and if his suspicion about how to get out of the loop is correct then it beats the alternative.
⢠Erek works out a shorthand for himself. Jake teaches it back to him every morning, and memorizes a page of notes written in the shortened code every evening. He deserves extra credit in Algebra for this, even with his new expertise on polynomials.
⢠Jakeās parents keep catching him to ask about Tom.Ā Theyāre worried āĀ heās stayed in his room all day today.Ā All day today.Ā All day today.
āIām close.āĀ Jake stands in the door of Tomās room.Ā Ardek is curled in a ball on his bed.Ā āI swear, Iām getting close.ā
Ardek lifts Tomās head.Ā His eyes are dull.
Jake has been there.Ā Jake knows.
He shuts the door when he leaves.
⢠āForget all of that,ā Erek says, ten seconds after handing Jake todayās notes.Ā āForget all of it.āĀ His auto-generated voice sounds excited.Ā āHow long do we have?ā
āThe loop resets at midnight,ā Jake says.
Erek nods.Ā Heās grinning.Ā āWeāll be cutting it fine, but I think you can do this.Ā Because it all fits, if you just add in the Neuguyn Equation and drop the exponential termāā
āāover lambda,ā Jake finishes.Ā āBecause then itās symmetrical, and simplifying it takes half the time.ā
Erek raises his eyebrows.Ā āDude, how many Thursdays have you had?ā
Jake shakes his head.Ā āNeuguyn Equation.Ā Teach it to me.ā
⢠Jake wakes up.Ā Jake throws himself out the window, hitting the ground hard.Ā But heās up, morphing to Homer even as he goes at a mad sprint for Erekās house.Ā Neuguyn Equation, in place of the exponent.Ā Neuguyn Equation, in place of the exponent.
⢠Jake throws open his front door, three hours later.Ā āArdek!ā he yells.Ā āArdek, weāve got it!ā
āJake?āĀ His momās straightening up from where she was working in the living room.Ā āShouldnāt you be at school?Ā Tomās home sick, are you also...?ā
Jake ignores her.Ā Heāll apologize tomorrow, if there is a tomorrow.Ā āArdek!āĀ He pounds on Tomās bedroom door.
Ardek yanks it open.Ā āYou have an answer?ā
Jake nods.Ā āWe got it.ā
Ducking back into the room, Ardek yanks on shoes and socks.Ā āYes, yes, yes!āĀ He leans down the stairs.Ā āMom!Ā Weāre borrowing the car!ā
Jakeās mom says something in response, and it doesnāt sound like an affirmative.Ā Ardekās already grabbing the keys.
Jake gives directions to the Kingsā house.Ā His own heart is pounding, his fingertips tingling.Ā Please let this work.Ā Please.
⢠Erek answers the door, smiling pleasantly.Ā āPlease do not be fooled by my human morph,ā he tells Ardek.Ā āThis is just a temporary means of avoiding suspicion by the neighbors.ā
Ardek takes this with a nod.
āYouāre ready?ā Erek asks Jake.
Jake takes a breath, and rattles off the math.Ā Itās a ten-minute process.
Erek nods.Ā Then he reaches out, grabbing Tom by the wrist.Ā āI need you to stay here, as you risk getting hurt if you stand too close to the collapse when Jake sets it off.ā
āYeah, okay,ā Ardek says.Ā āFine with me.ā
Jake walks over to the sphere of what looks like ball lightning, floating in the middle of the Kingsā living room.Ā Itās hard even to look at, eating light and energy from the world around it.
He grabs the first of the metal rods from the floor, and plunges it into the current.Ā The power jolts up his arm, throwing off the rhythm of his heart, making his hair stand on end.Ā He grabs the other rod, closing the circuit.
He shifts them apart, then brings them together, building up the flow.Ā Does it again.Ā Does it again.Ā His body is burning, stuttering.Ā Heās falling apart.
Thereās a pop of displaced air, and the world goes into reverse.
The sun plunges down to the east, the sky going dark.Ā Ghostly shapes, echoes of past possibilities, shoot past in reverse.Ā Jake feels those universes collapsing into his chest, thousands of possibilities yanked back into his body in a single brain-exploding instant.Ā The air sucks out of the room, drops back in.Ā Shutting his eyes does nothing to help, because he can still feel those branches being pulled back into him.
And then itās done.Ā Heās standing in the living room, the ball lightning absent, just Erek and Ardek and Tom.
āDid it work?ā Ardek asks.
Erek frowns.Ā āDid what work?ā
Jakeās head snaps around.Ā āEmergency override: six.Ā Iām sorry, friend, but we cannot play today.Ā You require maintenance.ā
The pemalite code, despite being translated, despite not having been spoken in forty thousand years, works perfectly.Ā Erek goes blank and dead, hologram shutting off entirely, body freezing in position.
āUh.āĀ Ardek tries to yank Tomās wrist away, makes no progress at all against that relentless thousand-pound grip.Ā āWhat the hell?ā
āMr. Kingās in the other room,ā Jake says levelly.Ā āHeāll get you food and water, and heāll make sure Tom doesnāt die.Ā But he canāt hurt Erek, or Tom, trying to get you loose.Ā And he doesnāt have any kandrona.ā
Jake doesnāt know if the math suddenly fitting helped him to make a decision, or if it suddenly fit because he finally decided.Ā But he does know that one thing is always true about Crayakās traps: that the Ellimist is very good at leaving the Animorphs a third way out.
āPlease,ā Ardek is begging.Ā Heās yanking harder now, but Erek doesnāt move.Ā Canāt move, until Jake turns him back on.Ā āPlease, please, Iām sorry.Ā Iām sorry!ā he screams, in Tomās voice.Ā Straining Tomās throat.
āI know,ā Jake says.Ā And then he walks out the front door.
Itās Thursday.Ā Itās Thursday, but heās pretty sure tomorrow will be Friday.
⢠Jake wakes up.Ā He wakes because his mom is shaking him.Ā āHoney, we need your help.āĀ She sounds frantic.Ā This is new.
āWhat day is it?ā Jake asks.
āFriday,ā she says dismissively, not noticing his sharp inhale.Ā āHoney, nobodyās seen Tom since yesterday morning, your dad and I have called everyone we know, and āā
Jake rolls out of bed.Ā āIāll go looking for him.Ā I know which friend he might be with.ā
His mom rushes out of the room.Ā Itās Friday.Ā Itās Friday.
⢠When he gets to Erekās place, Tom is slumped against Erekās unmoving legs.Ā His wrist is swollen black within Erekās grip.Ā Ardek lies dead on the floor.Ā Itās Friday.
⢠The cops knock on Jakeās front door, less than an hour after they get home.Ā This, even though Jakeās mom called to cancel the missing-persons report 30 minutes ago.
Tom answers, right arm tucked into the pocket of his coat.Ā Tom tells the officers, his voice hoarse and ragged, that it was just a stupid bender and that heās very sorry for going out drinking underage.Ā Tom assures them both it wonāt happen again.Ā Tom sees them on their way.
Jake shuts the door, locks it.Ā āThose were...ā
āControllers, yeah.āĀ Tom coughs, winces.Ā Ardek must have screamed all night.Ā āAnd theyāll be back within the hour.ā
Jake nods.Ā āPack your stuff, then.Ā Weāre running.āĀ He knew this might happen.Ā He knew.
āTheyāre going to find us,ā Tom rasps.
āOnly way out was through.āĀ Jake thinks.Ā He hopes.Ā āDonāt know about you, but I was getting pretty sick of Thursdays.ā
Tom nods.Ā āShould contact your war-prince first, though.ā
āYeah,ā Jake says.Ā āAbout that.ā
