You've done if they had changed ages, if it was set in the 2010s and if it was set in the Civil Rights Era, now we need to know: what if the books were set in the 1890s and not the 1990s? Because even if we discount a total party kill, if things ended in a victory like in canon (or Eleutherophobia) the end and aftermath of the war alone would be incredibly interesting (and complicated, and probably completely different)

What if Animorphs was set in the 1980s?
I've never been — missed them by over 2 years! Does anyone who knows the era have thoughts?
Not a lot changes.
Information gathering gets a bit riskier, because there are far fewer digital resources so the kids need to physically access things like libraries, data centers, and archives to get records and blueprints. Those resource being in a fixed physical location rather than available online thanks to Andalite hacking means its easier for the yeerks to secure them or set traps, but that's not anything the kids haven't overcome before.
The flipside is that the SciFi tech the yeerks brought with them stands out a lot more. They'd be forced to either rely on the more primitive, wired human systems, or risk a simple frequency scan from whatever gadget Ax cobbled together at Radio Shack pin pointing any yeerk controlled facility in town in town by checking for a building that has wireless signals more advanced than radio. Additionally, tutoring the human kids in the techniques to bypass human security systems gets much easier. Most of the Animorphs will end up passable hackers and phone phreakers fairly quickly just because the sophistication of human tech that can make it entirely obtuse to the layman just isn't as dense yet.
if anything the starting gang of animorphs would be larger-- mall arcades peaked in the 80s and started to decline in the 90s, as home videogame consoles got cheaper and more sophisticated. there could have been any number of classmates and more casual friends to the core group that were tagging along for a mall night and then roaming around the abandoned construction site, in the 80s vs the 90s. in the 2000s, it starts getting pretty unlikely, and by 2020 it seems impossible that 13 year olds would be allowed out at night at all, let alone that there would be a mall to hang out at.

Tom would dearly like to be anywhere else, and he's pretty sure that the only silver lining to humanity's having lost the war is that Essa 412 is in big trouble with the higher-ups over how it all went down.

Is Marco an anti-hero? I’m not really sure what the term means.
I'll argue: No, Marco isn't an antihero. But he wants us to see him as one.
My understanding from my half-remembered BA in English is that the antihero is:
The protagonist
Someone who thinks they're at least somewhat in the right at the time the story takes place
Someone the audience is meant to think is wrong (or disagree with)
The Ur-example IIRC is Pip from Great Expectations — if you don't spend much of the story cringing at what a classist pig he's becoming, read another book. Wikipedia lists Dexter Morgan, Walter White, and Annaliese Keating as recent examples.
Obviously Marco's a co-protagonist of Animorphs, and if his ethics don't make you at least a little uncomfortable sometimes then you are not the kind of person I want to be around. But he rarely ever thinks he's in the right when he's doing something morally sketchy. If anything he's too hard on himself in places where he's been put in an impossible position. Not only that, but he puts a ton of effort into trying to do the right thing, even when it's hard. He just wants the reader to think it comes easy for him.
Like, when he says "call me Mr. Ruthless" in #25, he's sad about the baby seals whose dead mom he's eating, because he has no other food source. Cassie and Tobias (the team softies) both set aside this concern as "we gotta eat" + "at least the baby seals will feed a baby orca." Marco tries to turn that empathy off, but thinks of his own dead mom the whole time. Or his speech about ruthlessness being "the bright, clear line... that goes from motive to means... not caring about anything but the beautiful fact that you can see the solution" (#30). People quote that passage out of context, but the context is all-important: he's crying himself to sleep with the knowledge he must kill his mom to save a bunch of strangers. He loves Eva infinitely more than he cares for Jara and the other hork-bajir, but he selflessly chooses to stop Visser One anyway. That "ruthless" decision? Is to sacrifice his own family to save Toby's, because he knows it's what his mom would want even though it's the last thing he wants.
So most of Marco's "ruthless" "cold" "expedient" decisions really come down to shutting down his emotions in order to put others' needs ahead of his own. Doesn't mean he's never mean or selfish — just ask Tobias. Doesn't even make him a good person — look at Nora. But the guy who doesn't care about anyone? That's who Marco wishes he could be. That guy was never an Animorph in the first place, and probably has his mom back to boot. Marco's actual self is the guy who fights the war despite his best intentions, because he's willing to put Jake's love for Tom over his own love for his dad.
Guys, we need to get Alloran to the wife-guy-tournaments! Can't think of other wife guys from Animorphs (I thought about Elfangor briefly, but I don't think he's a wife guy), but if you do, go submit them or at least Alloran to the tournament so that there is Ani representation. :)

Was thinking about Tobias being trapped in Morph in the first book again, and how that weirdly bolsters Jake's leadership; the Animorphs have a very early example of how bad things can go when someone Doesn't listen to him. They'd both probably be horrified to think of it that way I assume.
The Invasion is such an excellent one-two-three punch of an opening that I've never seen it topped in series fiction. Animorphs tells you EXACTLY what you're getting into with the first book.
We get about 3 pages of our heroes having wonder and joy at aliens being real before #1 hits us with the graphic onscreen death-by-cannibalism of this kind, caring stranger. And if Jake being chased by 7-foot blade monsters wasn't scary enough, he only escapes because a human bystander dies in his place.
So Jake goes home. To his nuclear suburban family, and his piddly sports problems, and his nice morph-training sequence with his friends. And just kidding there's a yeerk living inside your home already and it knows where you sleep. But that's fine, we'll just tell an adul — oh shit the cops are controllers the reporters are controllers the camp counselors are controllers the vice principal's a controller Elfangor really fucking undersold this problem.
So it's up to them, they guess. And Marco might be scared of dying, and Cassie might be reluctant to fight, but Tobias seems 100% confident they can save the world! So they go. And they don't save Tom, and they get people killed, and they do nothing to hurt Visser Three. And they don't even all make it home at the end of the day. Because it turns out Animorphs is not only a series where supporting characters die; it's a series where the main characters get permanently injured and will never be the same again.
Welcome to the war, kids.
I also don't know if there's a term for the trope, but. Horror pretty much always has a beat where a main character dies or gets permanently harmed really early on, because a) it tells the audience that this is a story where anyone can die, and b) it tells the protagonists they're in a setting where anyone can die.
Like [SPOILERS FOR VARIOUS HORROR MOVIES] Kane in Alien, Johnny in Night of the Living Dead, Dan in Frozen, Jonathan in Dracula, Hutch in The Ritual, Jason in Cloverfield, Mathias in The Ruins, Mary in Sinners, or Frank in 28 Days Later. [END SPOILERS]
Those characters all exist to be not just supporting cast members but people we know, people we like... who then encounter terrible fates that make the stakes of the rest of the story all too real. Each of them gets a moment that shifts the story from being adventurous (Alien, Cloverfield), family-oriented (Sinners, Night of the Living Dead), or "scary but we're handling it" (The Ritual, Dracula) to HOLY HELL WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE at the moment the eldritch forces eat them alive. They make clear this is a space where damage is permanent, where death is real and Captain America's not gonna popping back up 6 issues later good as new, and where anyone can die.
Again, I don't know if there's a term for that trope. But there's clearly a deliberate choice to have Tobias end up permanently, for-real, trapped in another body in the very first book in the series. Because it tells the reader, and more importantly it tells the characters, exactly what's at stake here.

I remember reading some of your Animorphs AU's where David is spared his fate from the books, like the AU where the Animorphs get the chance to do it all over (Peggy Sue AU) and wonder what he'd be like if he got to grow up, rather how it will be for the Animorphs in that particular AU considering that there is a chance they will encounter him as an adult.
I hate to say it, but most of us know a guy already exactly like David would be as an adult. A little broey, a little mean, never quite crossing the line with his behavior in a way that anyone can call out. If he gets a job in a male-dominated hierarchical environment, he ends up excelling — he fits right in! he really knows how to sell himself! — but it's funny how he can never get anyone to collaborate with him twice. If he has a wife, she starts a lot of statements with "he's a great guy, really," and "he's never hit me."
And his boss, his drinking buddies, his CounterStrike team, will be So! Very! Shocked! when he gets arrested or fired or sanctioned at all for shutting his kids out of the house all night or groping a woman who was able to fight back. Because he's Such! A! Nice! Guy! and they had No! Idea!
Of course, the real shock in this case would be that he faced consequences. Because when it was the waitress who asked him to stop joking about following her home, she got called a hysteric and left a $0 tip. When it was Mandy from accounting who reported his dick pics, Mandy got "restructured" right off the org chart on grounds of "not the right fit." And there are 1000 other people out there, who knew they'd be making themselves crazy bitches if they asked him to stop patting them on the leg or to look somewhere else on the train or to please not touch their hair or to not tell that joke again. Those 1000 aren't shocked at all, nor is his wife, nor are his kids, nor is anyone who has ever been in his vicinity with hair or skin or clothes that let him conclude he can act without consequence.
I don't need to imagine David grown up. He lived down the hall from me, he worked in my school's English department. He puts his hand on my arm and leans in too far to tell me that actually, it's been scientifically proven that most reports of sexual harassment are false.

He's the company golden boy so if he touches your leg while you're standing at the copier and says, "Nice tights" and then says "Oh, I didn't know I got you" when you confront him, you can't report him because the higher ups will believe him or say your skirt was too short and what did you expect? Ok this activated feels for me too
actually, the more i think about it, the more i start to believe that marco/rachel/tobias has the highest rate of long-term success out of the ships between those three (working under the assumption that being in a throuple is something they're all comfortable with and willing to do). it gives all of their one-on-one problems room to breathe. rachel wants to do normal teenage things with someone she likes? one of her boyfriends is human and less pressure is put on tobias to be human as often as possible. marco and tobias dating each other is player's choice but either way they bond over wrangling their girlfriend and also setting her loose and watching her wreak havoc. marco has two people on his team and feels less lonely/against the world. i think it would all gel pretty well, relatively
I agree — Marco and Rachel can make each other worse; Tobias can fix them. The two "halves" of the team (the 4 human kids vs. the shorms) really do need Rachel and Tobias's romance to keep them from ever drifting too far apart. (I guess there's also the dynamic where, late in the war, Marco drifts over to the shorms' team as Rachel draws closer to Cassie and Jake.)
But yes, Tobias could definitely help prevent them from becoming toxic soup. He sees Rachel's softer side, and he forces Marco to lighten up. He could get them to relax and be genuine around each other, and he could help keep the team from spiraling apart.

Anyways, Marco takes a while to reconcile some of his earlier remarks to Tobias to this newfound way of living. He treated him normally but normal was kinda bullying and it takes a while to break that dynamic. The mall does it tho. They go one day and Tobias sees the roof that he almost splattered himself against. Marco makes a remark about it, not really snide but very... empathetic. Tobias had never considered before what Marco's life was like at it's lowest. Obviously it sucked too but when would they have ever talked about that? Marco tells him that the things Tobias thought, at least in regards to ending things because of the deep chasm of horror that seemed unfaceable, they were pretty normal, even for teenagers whose parents hadn't died, or been aliens, or supposedly died and then turned out to be aliens. It's quiet for a bit and Tobias takes him by the hand and thanks him, honestly and sincerely. It makes Marco blush in a way that seems more than usual and he tells Tobias that he's there to help, any time. He's his step-boyfriend in law after all. Later on this will become just boyfriend but it takes a lot more. But they're all happy together. Ax lives close by when he's on earth. Cassie expands the Clinic and hires help. Jake is... well he's still not okay but he's better than he is in the regular universe. His brother didn't make it but he didn't send his cousin to her death at least. Maybe Cassie and he even have a chance this way

TOBIAS - paranoid munchies fiend. Our boy morphed into a human to hit that spliff, and he has 8 timers set to make sure he doesn't forget to morph back. Every sound represents a possible obstacle to getting back into the sky, he is JUMPY. That being said, he has wandered into the main house and is destroying any and all snacks with processed sugar
Ax - Same insatiable hunger as Tobias, but much less paranoia. Borderline fistfighting Tobias over the last cinnabon roll that Marco ordered them before they started. Ax keeps proposing ways they could upgrade tech around the house, but he is too food motivated to follow through
Jake - He can't believe Marco talked him into this. Still... it's kinda nice. He's usually always dialed up to a 10, but it's nice to be so mellow. He is quiet and lost in thought, but following Cassie like a shadow. Every now and then he pipes up about an "incredible idea" but then starts mumbling before he finishes.
Cassie - Y'all are gonna fight me on this, but it's her weed. She made hippie friends at various protests, and they gifted this blunt to her on her birthday. She was going to throw it out, but Marco talked about "team bonding" and now here they all are... Cassie spends all of her time petting various animals in the barn. "Can you BELIEVE how soft this rabbit's fur is?
Rachel - ls "not feeling it". Has been on her phone the last 20 minutes acting indifferent. In reality, she hates not feeling in control and is just riding it out. She will not be doing this again.
Marco - experienced stoner goofball, he barely even feels 1/6th of a blunt. He is the unofficial trip sitter, intentionally bugging Tobias but also steering he and Ax away from Cassie's parents.

No thanm you, they all have so much trauma that the weed would force them to talk through.
t's true that an Animorphs and DC crossover would be tricky because of how experienced the Justice League is at fighting alien invasions. But what if superheroes like the Teen Titans or even the Justice League weren't founded until years after the Yeerk War because they had all been inspired by the Animorphs? Imagine Superman, Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, or Batman deciding to become the heroes they are because the Animorphs were their role models.
I'm stumped on this one, because I feel like Justice League of America is such a product of the 1960s-70s, and Animorphs is such a product of the 90s-00s, that I don't know how to reverse the causality.
Do any DC and Animorphs fans have ideas?

Pull inspiration from the Young Justice cartoon: lure the key figures of the JL into space and make them Controllers while they are separated from their support network and isolated. Martian Manhunter is essential to suborn bc a telepath of his caliber will end any earthside invasion before it can begin. While the heavy hitters are off planet, the 90s Yeerk invasion can begin; the sidekicks (don't call them sidekicks!) are of age with the Animorphs and are the first to be clued in. They don't know who they can go to for help since the JL is compromised
