I feel like 16 is such a weird age, like, before everyone was like secretive or outright said no to like relationships, then u suddenly go to eighth and everyone and their mothers suddenly are in a relationship like??????? Like, YOU NEVER EVEN TALKED TO THAT GUY BEFORE AND NOW YALL ARE IN A RELATIONSHIP????? Then everyone starts pressuring you and asking you "Bro why aren't you in a relationship?" as if guys randomly appear at your doorstep in a basket with a note saying "Im your boyfriend now" like, im not an orphanage. Then even if you don't want to be in a relationship you start basing your worth on it because the weird kid from the next classroom apparently has two boyfriends and you're like "Well I dont even have one" cue existential crisis. Like is this sudden pressure you feel to be in a relationship because everyone else is in one, or is it the realization that you're missing out in an important form of human connection. Idk man. Dont ask me why im not in a relationship cool artsy guys try to be nonchalant and leave me on delivered for 2 weeks i wonder WHY im not in one.
I feel like my writing fell off so hard because like bro, reading my essays from the seventh grade and comparing them to my current essays, how the fuck did i write so eloquently and just nonchalantly rhyming every other sentence, like what the fuck happened to me T0T. Please i want my writing skills back T0T.
Problematic aspects in Six of Crows
So recently, an anon asked me if there was something problematic in SoC (and I accidentally deleted it, sorry anon!) so I thought I’d make a post pointing them out.
First of all,SoC is one of my all time favourite series; and this is by no means a personal attack at her or you.
1. Inej’s ethnicity
The Suli are a nomadic people who travel across the country as carnival performers and fortune tellers- pretty obviously hinting that Inej is Romani, right?
The Romani people originated from age indian subcontinent, yes, but Romani people have been in Europe since around the 14th century.
They are a distinct ethnic and cultural group. While some of their culture and languages might be reminiscent of Indian ones, they have evolved distinct ways of dress, beliefs, etc and do not consider themselves south Asian or Indian.
But the majority of the fandom seems to ignore that and considers her as South Asian. Heck, I even heard someone say Inej was ‘middle-eastern coded’.
For reference- Inej fanart by @phantomrin (aka how Leigh+ the fandom sees her) vs. Romani people in traditional clothing.
I know we need more rep in books, but this is erasure. The Romani, Middle Easterners and South Asians are NOT INTERREPLACEABLE.
Lemme just say that again,
ROMANI ≠ ARABIC ≠ SOUTH ASIAN
2. LGBT+ rep
yeah, listen first. I know Leigh is the Queen of diversity in YA, and I agree but WHY IS IT THAT WHEN WE SAY ‘LGBT REP’ ITS ALWAYS LGB. WHY DO PEOPLE KEEP IGNORING THE T.
In KoS we got i an influx of wlw pairings, and while that’s pretty amazing, I ain’t calling her ‘inclusive’ yet until we get a trans character. Seem harsh? Imagine if all the ‘LGBT inclusive’ media you consumed consisted of only straight trans people the cis LGBs would loose their minds.
3. This is kinda constructive criticism I guess
(As pointed out by @confusion-and-cake here)
I did some research upon seeing this post and have come to the conclusion that Leigh Bardugo mashed up aspects from South Asian cultures (particularly Gujarati culture) with Romani culture to create the Suli. While it’s good of her to put more poc representation in her books, it’s also harmful that she mashed up different cultures/beliefs/identities because they are all very different and NOT INTERCHANGEABLE
Update on the Inej situation
Hey can we also talk about the fact that her only country representing Africa (do I look like I give a shit its “technically Australia,” it was fucking Africa okay?) had to be colonized? I’m sorry? But why was that necessary. The way she handles her poc is certainly dodgy when it come to black people? Her killing off her only black women to save her only other black woman. Hmmm.
(just to say I am white and this is based on what I’ve perceived and I don’t aim to speak over any poc)
THIS! IS! WHAT! I! MEAN!
From @zemenipearls (who I haven’t actually asked about using this so I’ll take it down if they want me to) but this is what I mean just coming from someone with a more informed pov.
*wakes up temporarily from depression hiatus*
Yeah so I talk a lot about this on my Novyi Zem, Aditi Hilli, and Jesper Fahey tag. I’ve been @ing Leigh for years about the antiblackness. Trying to make Novyi Zem into Australia / N America erases first nations and Aboriginal people, erases the African coded people, and falls again into the trappings of colonialism. So yeah just scroll those three tags for a better analysis, since that’s what I normally focus on.
Oh my god the amount of times i saw random fanarts showing Inej in a SARI is wild. Inej is so very clearly shown to be Romani. For example, in her time in the menagerie Inej was stereotyped and fetishized for her suli roots so harshly that a wall art of two suli girls smiling (they were also stereotyped) triggered her. This harmful stereotyping has been happening to Romani women since the minute they stepped foot into Europe(They were fetishized for their "wild roots and wild characteristics"). This is a big piece of her and adds so much depth to her character. Therefore by mashing 3 different groups with very different cultures is extremely harmful and takes away the historical significance of her pain, as her pain isnt just fiction as she is, her pain is real and real people went through what she did. Please for the love of god please stop putting Inej in a sari and out her in proper Romani clothing.🙏
What do you guys read to get out of a reading slump?? I just finished the six of crows duology and the reading slump is wild ToT. Please someone quickly recommend me a book so i can entertain myself after the government cuts off the country's wifi again!!

Why are there so many versions of little women?? Like some google searches say that little women has 700+ pages whereas some say that it has 300+ pages?? Also does anyone have this edition of little women? Can y'all tell me whether or not this is the abridged version or the unabridged version cuz it seems too short to be the unabridged one. It has 345 pages
I just finished the six of crows duology so you have to listen to me rant
I just finished Crooked Kingdom. Im so sad that this book had to end, i would do anything to read a continuation of their stories after the book ended, like their day to day life. I love the crows they'll always have a special place in my heart, i feel like Ill always compare found family books with them from now on. The ending matched all of their relationships too. Kanej forming a partnership, privateer Inej and barrel boss Kaz wiping off dirty traders, merchers, politicians and slavers is amazing, and Kaz meeting Inej's parents!!! I can write an entire essay on Inej meeting her parents after all that happened, this moment made me cry happy tears. Wesper living blissfully at the Van Eck house is so wholesome and Wylan finally getting his mother out of that asylum. Also Jesper agreeing to taking fabrikator lessons like yes. I know this might be controversial but Nina and Matthias' ending fit their situation. It was shown from the start that they are star crossed lovers( like i know they were welcomed in Ravka and everything and im super sad about it too but it was foreshadowed from the START that the author had no intention of letting them stay together happily). But I still hope Nina and Matthias can live happily in another life, they just werent meant to be in this one. They are the definition of right person wrong time. Yea im overall super happy that i read this book i have to thank the friend who URGED me with all her might to read this (im a book snob i only read classics most of the time). Someone please give books like six of crows i need MORE FOUND FAMILY books plsssss i dont know how Ill live without my crows pls give me something else to obsess over!!!
francis abernathy is genuinely god’s strongest warrior because how did this motherfucker survive THREE homoerotic failed situationships in a ROW, bunny, bunny’s murder, henry, richard, charles, incest twins, being a redhead, a SUICIDE ATTEMPT, being catholic, being gay in the 80s, being catholic AND gay BOTH in the 80s, multiple nervous breakdowns, vermont, an alcoholic absent mother, a homophobic grandpa, being fatherless AND to top it all off being the only diva in the classics group 😢
I love how in Six of crows and crooked kingdom everyone's perception of Kaz is like
"A fucking demon who crawled out from the dirtiest canals of the Barrel. A genius mastermind whose plans are always terrifyingly on point. I just wish he would tell us his plans beforehand, i wonder what he schemed this time"
And we get to Kaz's perspective and its like-
"Lol you and me both, but look Inej's braid is coming loose, if only i could just touch it-"
we as a fandom need to recognize more that kaz brekker literally benefits from ketterdam’s version of pretty privelege
the girls at the menagerie want to take him to bed
multiple of the dregs (canonically jesper, inej, and anika) have a crush on him at some point
imogen was totally into him even at 14
the most terrifying man in ketterdam and he’s looking good while doing it! put some respect on my man’s name

Writing a Story from Start to Finish - Guide
I see you guys in the tags and reblogs talking a lot about how you have a desire to write, but have no clue what to write about, or where to even start figuring that out. While starting any project can be incredibly daunting, I wanted to put together a little guide to hopefully make it a bit more accessible. Be warned, this will probably be a long post.
Step 1: Form an idea
All writing begins with this: an idea. Ideas can start as small as an object, or as big as a world or cast of characters. What’s important is that your idea genuinely interests you, and makes you want to explore it more.
There are a million ways to gain inspiration for ideas, but my favourite method is a sort of brainstorm/mind map of all the little and big things you find interesting. Any tropes, characters, places, concepts, objects, animals, other stories, etc. you love—write them down. Then, start connecting the pieces. Each connection is one concept or idea you could explore further.
If this doesn’t work for you, try using some writing prompts or check out 15 ways to spark new ideas.
If you are a planner, proceed to Step 2. If you are a pantser, skip to step 7.
Step 2: Create your Protagonist
Now that you have a sort of concept or inspiration to work off of, you need your main character. There are about as many ways to create characters as there are characters themselves, and each method is going to work better or worse for every writer.
At the barest minimum, all your protagonist needs is a Goal to work towards, a Reason for wanting it, and a Flaw that keeps them from having it right away.
These three things can form a baseline character. Consider what the thing they want, why they want it, and what’s keeping from it says about them as a person.
Rapunzel (from Disney’s Tangled) wants to see the ‘floating lights’ on her birthday. She wants to because she believes she will learn more about herself through seeing them. Her fear over disappointing and disobeying her ‘mother’ keeps her from it.
My favourite character creation technique is actually Here—it takes you through creating character in order to create story.
If that one doesn’t work for you, try this one. It is more focused on defining traits and figuring out the personality of the character first.
Step 3: Your Plot is your Protagonist’s Arc
As stated in the character creation technique I shared in Step 2, character is plot. By that I mean, the character’s journey is the plot of the story. We’re here to see the protagonist transform because of the circumstances incited in the beginning.
So to form a plot, we need to know who the character is at the beginning, and what they need to learn by the end.
Your character’s arc is A but B so C:
A – your character and their flaw
B – The conflict they go through
C – how they change
“Obsessed with success, Jenny Beech works tirelessly to earn the approval of her strict parents and graduate top of her class, but when the new girl in town pulls her into a whole new world of excitement and fun, she must stand up for herself against her impossible standards and learn how to be a teen again.”
This one sentence has everything we need to know about this story and character: “Obsessed with success (character trait/flaw), Jenny Beech works tirelessly to earn the approval of her strict parents and graduate top of her class (goal), but when the new girl in town pulls her into a new world of excitement and fun (conflict), she must stand up for herself against her impossible standards and learn how to be a teen again (change).”
If you have these three things, congratulations! You already have a story. If you’d like, you may begin writing it now (skip to step 8). Or…
Step 4: Theme
I did a whole post on theme you should check out here. Essentially, the big takeaway is that your theme is a lesson to impart to the readers—which means it is not a question, it is an answer.
For the example given above, our theme would likely be something like, “Teens need to balance their additional responsibilities as they mature into young adults with the joy of being young and having fun.” Or, “Friends and a close social network is more important than having the best grades.” Or, “It’s important to take frequent time away from work in order to maintain one’s humanity.” Etc. Etc.
Theme is conveyed through what your characters need to do to succeed (or what they do that causes their failure). If Jenny lets loose and suffers consequences for it in the end, we’re saying that she should have stuck to her studies rather than letting herself have fun. If she lets loose and is rewarded with a greater relationship with herself and her parents, we’re saying that was the correct thing to do.
Step 5: Outlining
Now that we have a plot and a theme, we can outline our story. An outline is like a roadmap of what you’re writing. It can be as specific or broad as you want. My outlines tend to follow this structure, and I improvise the little stuff in between, but if you need to get all your ideas within your outline, that’s good too!
Just make sure your notes make sense to you so when you need to know where to go next, you have a handy tool just for that.
I used to be a first draft pantser. That’s cool if you are too, it worked really well for me in at least finishing a draft. What I’ve discov
Step 6: Worldbuilding
Worldbuilding is probably where you’ll spend the most time because there’s just so much. However, I also find it one of the most fun parts. The minimal thing you need to know is your world’s normal, and how that normal is disrupted in the inciting incident.
Jenny’s normal is school work and trying to impress her parents. The disruption is the new girl in town.
Rapunzel’s normal is the tower and her hobbies. The disruption is Flynn breaking in.
I did a more in-depth post on worldbuilding here, but the basics is just ask questions, explore consequences, and do plenty of research.
Which brings us to…
Step 7: Research
This can also be done after your first draft, but can’t be skipped entirely. It’s important when trying to convey experiences that may not be wholly your own, or unique perspectives, that you understand the context behind those things in the real world.
Once again, ask questions, talk to people, and remain open to what you find.
Step 8: We can start writing now
Now that you have all your planning ducks in a row (or have a good inspiration to jump from) it’s time to start writing! Either go from the outline you built, or just try out scenes. I have some tips for actually writing the dang thing that I’ll put here:
Have you ever been in a situation where you just can’t seem to get a scene to fill much more than a page or two? Or you’re at 500 words when
I always find myself freezing on a really good writing streak because I end off the chapter and have to face the question of what should com
I’m sure you’ve heard other writers and creators talk about ‘running out of words’ or ‘replenishing words’. I’ve also heard it called ‘fuel’
Let me know how your writing goes, good luck!
This is the best advice ive seen for writing
I have just finished The Secret History by Donna Tartt. I had seen Henry's demise from a mile away and it isnt the thing that disturbed me. In the last pages of the book, Charle's downward spiral because of his paranoia and alcoholism is so impressively written that I, myself, felt threatened by Charles whenever he appeared. Also a thing that caught me completely off gaurd was when Richard described how he wanted to rape Camilla. I feel like Donna Tartt added that in to show the readers that Richard here, is in fact not the victim, and that he is as terrible as Henry and Charles, it really stopped me in my tracks when I was really beginning to feel bad for Richard. Now in the epilogue. Francis' and Camilla's endings are so sad. Francis was forced into a Lavendar marriage with a person he finds repulsive, when he was dating a man he actually liked is just so tragic; and Camilla staying behind and caring for her sick grandmother while her brother went AWOl is so sad but I feel like both of their endings were justified but i cant help but feel bad for them.

Camilla: If I fall…
Charles: I’ll be there to catch you.
Francis: *looks at Richard* What if I fall?
Richard: Then I’ll fall with you, never leaving your side.
Bunny : *watches these two interactions*
Bunny, to Henry: And if I fall?
Henry: I’ll be the one who pushed you.
