yall gotta learn to separate "this character deserved better" (as in "this character has an intentionally tragic story that is supposed to feel bad") and "this character deserved better" (as in "this character had so much potential and was failed by the writer")

I mean this with love. You will never be the greatest of your generation. You cannot intentionally be the greatest of your generation. You will not make good art trying to be the greatest of your generation. You don’t get to chose that, not even your contemporaries can chose that. The standards you are trying to live up are the romanizations of artwork that is disassociated from its context through the augmentation of time. You cannot achieve this in your lifetime. Just make something you believe is good and worth showing people. It’s okay to make art purely for the sake of self expression and human connection.
