Plato compares the human soul (psyche) to a chariot driven by a charioteer and pulled by two horses. The Rational Soul (Logistikon) of the charioteer represents conscious logic and reason. The Spirited Soul is the white horse, representing willpower, honor, and righteous anger. The Appetitive Soul is the unruly, wild black horse, representing hunger, lust, and primal, chaotic desires (the beast within).
Everything has been there, and it’s still there, and at some point it’s repeated. A teacher of mine once said there are only two periods, one classic and one Romantic. Reason and feeling, sense and imagination. That are repeated and repeated.
