i mean this in the gentlest way possible: you need to eat vegetables. you need to become comfortable with doing so. i do not care if you are a picky eater because of autism (hi, i used to be this person!), you need to find at least some vegetables you can eat. find a different way to prepare them. chances are you would like a vegetable you hate if you prepared it in a stew or roasted it with seasoning or included it as an ingredient in a recipe. just. please start eating better. potatoes and corn are not sufficient vegetables for a healthy diet.

Dressed up ramen - just toss in some random veggies in ramen of your choice. Pretty much everything I've tried goes fine with it.

Sweet and sour pork (haven't tried it but chicken should be fine in place of pork)

You can also puree most vegetables and eat with a spoon or use them as a dip

Salad (remember you can put whatever you want in it! Even if that means no lettuce)
Most veggies are okay raw, and are usually very crunchy
Veggies google says stay crunchy after lightly cooking:

Bamboo shoots
Broad texture tips:
You can change textures by eating raw, cooking, chopping, pureeing, etc
You can separate different textures to use in different ways (ie using broccoli tops in a soup and eating the bottoms raw)
It also really helps to think about why you dislike a vegetable. I found that I am scared of green foods so I like to use those veggies for ingredients in things they are well hidden for. I've also learned that watching something while eating helps because then I'm not looking at the gross green things. When possible, I also like to get help hiding it (ie using cream of celery soup in my chicken and dumplings).
Remember that vegetables are important because they contain nutrients that other foods donāt contain. NOT because they are low calorie.
Eating vegetables slathered in pork fat is always better than not eating vegetables. In fact fat will help you absorb the nutrients. Get those nutrients in your body by any means necessary.
Don't fall into the trap of thinking that you HAVE to eat vegetables raw or steamed or some other diet-culture-approved way.
The buttery, honey-drizzled vegetables you will actually eat are WAY better than the plain steamed ones you DON'T eat. It's not like the butter and honey take AWAY the vegetables' nutrients. They don't.

the late 2000s to mid 2010s were culturally, a time of a resurgence of hope. I don't think we seriously realized it at the time (for all the Obama campaign posters), but it honestly was the last period in recent history where it was assumed the future would be better.
that was a big thing, that many millennials didn't realize was a big thing, until it was torn away. we honestly thought it was over, the fear and uncertainty of the Cold War and the Nuclear Age (and Bush 2.0). we were born in an era of reprieve. things were bad, yes, the world was insane and unfair, but it was better than it was before. the world had been at the brink of ultimate disaster, and then it stepped back. (And we honestly thought we had escaped our parents' legacy, by sheer virtue of being born in the correct decade.)
I cannot overstate how much that shapes your worldview, growing up in a time where the recent present is better than the recent past. we had reason to believe the world was getting better. because it was, actually! for a good while there! progress was slow, but it was real, and we could feel its grit on our fingertips.
and now we're in an age of regression. because you were robbed. we were robbed. a great global era of robbery (of housing and food and time and health and body and freedom and fundamental human rights), has blossomed, and is happening everyday today.

At least two major artists (Lady Gaga and Chappell Roan) making a point to vocally support trans people the Grammys is a big deal in this political climate.
Also I think it's worth highlighting that they are both cis women, because bigots want us to believe cis women and trans women/trans people are at odds with each other.
Lady Gaga has ALWAYS been like this and ALWAYS been in our corner.
She used to be slandered as a trans woman tricking the public back when she debuted, and her response was literally "and so what if I was? Would it be so terrible?", rather than the expected "no I'm not but I support them!" or honestly the more normal for the time "I'm not a freak, Ew.".
This was at her debut, btw, so when her star power was at its weakest. And she still stood by us completely unflinchingly.

I just saw this for the first time. It made my day. Thank you lovely and i hope you are doing well.
For the most part, my approach to prescribing hormones is āsure,ā but I will note that the one thing I lean HARD on patients about is smoking. If youāre transgender, and youāre on hormones, the number one thing we want to protect is your cardiovascular health. Thatās frankly the number one thing I want to protect in all my patients, but anyone taking exogenous hormones is at higher baseline risk. And the best thing you can do for your heart is DONāT SMOKE. Itās a bitch to quit, and I didnāt even smoke much or long before I quit in my late teens, and I STILL didnāt enjoy quitting and had smoking dreams for years. Itās harder to quit than just about anything else up to and including crack and heroin, and thatās coming from a patient of mine who recently passed in her early 60s whoād done all of those thingsāfor years and yearsābut eventually was able to quit everything except smoking. And that killed her. She developed severe COPD and eventually called to say her blood oxygen saturation was dipping into the 70s, which is incompatible with life. She was lucid enough to decline medical care, including refusing to call 911 or go to the ER. A week later, after both I and one of our outreach nurses had contacted her to ask her to please go to the ER, I got a notification that sheād been found dead. She had been so frustrated that she wasnāt a candidate for a lung transplant.
One of my oldest trans patients is in her late 50s. Sheās had blood clots that went to the lungs. Repeatedly. Smoking raises that risk. Estrogen raises that risk. Sheās a veteran with PTSD; of course she smoked.
These arenāt theoretical. These are humans Iāve cared for over years of their lives. I have been rooting for themāmy beloved former addict, who spoke without shame about her years of homelessness and drug use in the city; my queer elders, who are slowly trading in their motorcycles for power scooters. I want everyone to live their fullest, best life.
Smoking doesnāt fit into that. Please donāt smoke. I donāt want you to die like thatānot now and not later. I want you to have the future that you may not be able to see yet, but exists.
Since I moved home as an out queer, word got out, and thereās a whole apartment complex of lesbians in their 60s to their 80s who come see meāsitting next to their wives in the office, nagging about blood pressure meds, tattling about not having gotten the shingles shot they said they would. To be clear, when I was growing up in town, I knew no lesbians. Not one. I knew one gay kid in my class, which eventually turned into two. We were it. To see these women living decades with their wives and being able to squabble like any couple in my office over who was supposed to bring their home blood pressure cuff in for us to check it⦠it means the world to me.
In addition to the fact that it kills you and the people around you, you should quit because Big Tobacco are smug, queer-hating assholes who named their campaign to hook gays āOperation SCUMā and, cross my heart, I am not shitting you. They also made the playbook used by Big Oil and antivaxx conspiracy theorists.
So, just a reminder that spite is a great reason to quit smoking.
Also, I keep hearing people RAVE about the book The Easy Way to Quit Smoking by Allen Carr. You can do this - other people have done this! Thereās help out there. And spite.

- smoke less! Make arbitrary rules about when you get to smoke. Tie smoking to some thing you hate to do but need to get done. Like, I only get to smoke when I do (thing I gotta do). Or I only get to smoke... when I am dressed for the day and have left the house. Whatever works from where you're starting. No smoking indoors, whatever, only 1 cigarette after work, make shit up
- If you're doing the "i only smoke when I drink" or "I only smoke socially" and it's becoming hanging out w smokers more often or drinking more often -> switch it up w prior thing new rules. I only smoke... alone. I don't smoke... with coffee. Whatever. Smoking w other smokers IMO only leads to more smoking don't do that for either of you
- Get your space smelling less of cigarettes. Like, wash your clothes all of em, designate one item your smoking jacket or whatever. Basically work to overcome the olfactory fatigue so you can actually smell how much you stink. I swear this one works even if you currently feel that you like the smell
- if you JUST STARTED, but your mental health is so shit that you don't have it in you not to smoke, moderate as well as you can to stave off the actual addiction part. Like, switch to lower nicotine cigarette brands (lights don't mean less, google this one). Don't smoke every day. Go every other. Make that your hard line - not every day. Give future you a better chance at kicking it
- In any context of this any starting point, supporting yourself through other avenues will help. Quality sleep, nutrition, exercise, mental health care, whatever all the basics anything achievable for you do those things if you can
- Substitute treats. Pick other things to treat yourself. Food, tv, bed rot, whatever. Let your id have other stuff that's not smoking
Ok im done this is all just. Idk stuff I wish I'd known decades ago that I hope can help others. There can be more to it than just quitting or not quitting if you feel stuck or hopeless in it cheers on the nebulous other
Itās also worth noting that people get discouraged by repeated attempts to quit, but the people who succeed at quitting and making it stick? Are people who have on average tried many, many times! Donāt beat yourself up if you struggle. The struggle is not weakness, itās where the success comes from.
as someone who used to smoke and quit for good about 8 years ago, big factors were moving into a home where no one else smoked, getting medication for my neurodivergence that drastically reduced depressive episodes, and finding alternative things to do at parties while drinking (i upped my delicious snack game - has the same social effect as cigarettes, people love to share in good snacks!)
none of these by themselves were enough to completely quit, the effect was cumulative. i got to the point where i smoked so infrequently that the taste and smell were overpoweringly bad, and my lungs and throat noticeably felt terrible the next day. That's what made it completely not worth it anymore, even while drinking surrounded by smokers.
My partner quit about 8-9 months ago. Factors were moving out of a house where they lived with friends who were smokers and heavy drinkers, and moving in with a sober nonsmoker, friendships with smoking buddies ending for unrelated reasons, changing jobs to a less stressful work environment, and having insurance and therefore gaining access to 1. drug that helps quit smoking, 2. mental health medication and therapy, 3. CPAP machine and subsequent ability to sleep restfully, 4. estrogen (now wants to spend former cigarette money on dresses and shoes and earrings).
i feel like quitting smoking is like mental health improvement: you can be stuck for a long time until by trial and error you hit on a lynchpin situation/change/habit that lets the rest of the work you've been putting in actually punch. you gotta reach the tipping point, and that's different for everyone. and in the meantime, every effort you make to improve your health and your life is not wasted, even if it doesn't last or let you quit once and for all.
