I know Aziraphale was butchered as well but for two weeks I've been loosing my entire mind over the the finale reducing Crowley to 'an artist who just wanted to make better art' bullshit. Crowley???? like???? Crowley is kind. That's his 'sin'. you cannot be kind and be obedient to a power structure that arbitrarily defines Good and Bad depending on where it’s geopolitical interests lie. Crowley also goes against his own free-will manifesto very often in order to be kind. Meddling in Elspeth’s life by giving her the 90 guineas isn't at the same time giving her the free range of choice in her circumstances. it’s direct interference. But it is saving a desperate, starving girl from dying by a gravegun. That is kindness. Sometimes being kind means breaking your own rules, taking the hit, and knowing when to hit da bricks because staying would cause more harm than good. Crowley is also a frankly ridiculous romantic, he wants to be James Bond, he wants a witty, clever, stylish solution to be enough to save the day. But he is just terrified. He is a coward most of the time because he actually understands the sheer brutality of the power structures surrounding him. He's felt their wrath directly, he's been changed by it and forced to build himself back up from scratch.
Aziraphale is the one thing that makes him try to be brave. Aziraphale is the reason he stops running.
And after 6000 years of that? of Aziraphale looking at him and saying "Deep down, I've always known "- even when he was risking both their lives just to say it out loud - all he gets from Aziraphale is what a good boy you've been Crowley, love the little pinky bit in the nebula, mhhhmmm???? after 6000 years he doesn't even get Aziraphale to acknowledge or love him for who he IS, who he built himself to be, but because he was God's best angel???
