Women wanted to be lawyers and engineers and chemists. They wanted to use their brains in challenging and interesting ways. They wanted to get the satisfaction from solving problems and inventing new shit and getting attention for it.

Thing is, back then there wasn't really a difference between 'normal' and 'problematic' manga. There was popular manga and extra weird stuff, but you weren't going to get called a pedophile over it.

Here we are now, with anime more mainstream, and it's a classic case of people moving into a space and kicking out the people who were already there. You get old, incredibly important anime deemed as stuff only incels and weirdos would like, and anything that dares not to be a shonen is 10x more likely to fall into it. You have people calling the medium uniquely pedophilic, as if the Japanese are somehow more attracted to children than the rest of the world. Americans will unironically say that shit as if they aren't going through the world's most stupid political drama with the Epstein list.

On the other side of it are people who ARE what these people accuse ever olden welf-proclaimed 'weebs' of being, those who unironically use the word tourist and ste simply the most bigoted people you'll ever meet. Absolutely insufferable pieces of shit. And yet you'll find that most of these people are ALSO new to the scene, unaware of even the most basic popular manga from before it became mainstream.
