I see... so many writing advice posts on Tumblr that can single handedly kill a young/beginning writerâs style that it makes me want to scream sometimes.
Let yourself be messy in writing. If artists are allowed to get paint over everything, including themselves, youâre allowed to have choppy sentences where the rhythm is weird and where you, god forbid, used an adverb.
Be the literary equivalent of an elementary school art class and be wild, innovative, and try new things out. In the end youâll have created something you had fun doing rather than trying to fit yourself into a set of rules set forth by âWho Knows What Their Credentials Are Besides That Theyâre A Creative Writing Majorâ.
and man... all of my professors in creative writing basically said this too??? like the entire department that even dipped a toe into creative writing said âfuck structure and rules and anything that isnât you writing from your soul.â even my nonfiction writing class ended up becoming the academic equivalent of a lawless over-dramatized cowboy western.
writing is, to me at least, trying to take the ever-evolving knotted string ball of ideas and words and plots and characters and everything else in your soul and trying to give it words as best you can. and if that means a fuckshit of adverbs then adverb away, bitches
