I'm realizing that what I want out of most settings is actually just Archer. I want a gaggle of messy, bizarrely competent idiots bungling their way through high stakes adventures while yapping and being dramatic.
That show had many problems and I don't blame anyone who dislikes it for those reasons but the premise? The chemistry? So good.
My one complaint with that show is how it got cruelly cut short, and had a hatchet job of an ending. I can't even bring myself to watch the last seasons anymore; I have found the ideal end point is when Archer accepts that Lana is suited to be a better leader than he is, and she takes her seat at Mallory's desk. Perfect ending, leaving it open for endless possibilities under her (the only) hand capable of steering the chaos that is the team.

I’d like to add this photo I took last night in Victoria of the statue of Captain Cook. Though I myself am not indigenous, I 100% agree that these murderers, kidnappers and rapists shouldn’t have huge statues and plaques that decorate them and say how “great” they were.

I had seen the first picture of the church, but not the second.
I went to a “Cancel Canada Day” event and burst into tears - not because I was surprised to learn of the unmarked graves (survivors told us they were there. Our government pushed it aside, and we let them), but because seeing all the people gathered in mourning drove it home: They. Were. Children.
This is my country’s legacy - and it’s not history. The last schools closed during my lifetime. My Father went to school with students who lived at the local residential school, after it was changed to a boarding house (read: holding centre) for indigenous youth who went to local schools.
They were all children, injured, abused, and killed in my country’s attempt to erase them. I want the world to see this and hold the state accountable to *active* reconciliation> I mean we could at least truly adopt UNDRIP in action instead of words for god’s sake.

Today, I migrated the majority of my important documents out of Google Docs and onto Ellipsus. This was not something that I was in any particular rush to do, I was actually waiting for Ellipsus to create a dedicated Android app first.
But then Google did something truly insane;
This is a document that I have been adding to and working in for over two years. It is an important document, that is tagged to be synched to Google Docs on my mobile for constant availability. I open it at least a dozen times a week.
Google locked me out of it.
A file that I own, have never shared with anyone, that is extremely personal and deeply important. It contains nothing illegal, or even morally objectionable. There is no grand conspiracy, no potential downfall of civilisation. If it were to be deleted, the only cost would be a massive blow to my mental health.
I tried the normal steps. Reset the app, reboot the phone, fiddle around with my internet connection - nothing worked. Luckily, I had it tabbed open on my desktop at home, and that session was still accepted. I downloaded a copy, and instantly backed it up into Ellipsus, followed swiftly by the remainder of my important documents.
But I spent an afternoon terrified that I had lost something irreplaceable because of an automated system that would have no recourse to fight.
This is my big catalyst to begin de-Googling myself. I'm aware that it will be tricky, but I have always accepted a minor power imbalance when it comes to Google. Scanning emails for keywords for ads, filtering photos to track trends, even the AI nonsense had a slim bit of bandwidth.
But having my data harvested and then being denied access to precious items that I have written, events I have chronicled for years, is the ultimate middle finger and I'm taking it for what it is.
Next weekend, I'll strip out my photos. Then, clear out as many emails as I can. Empty my Drive, backup any remaining documents and remove them. I don't care if I have to start paying for an email in future, because I'll find one with the most stringent privacy possible. The days of companies getting a lot for a little are gone, because they wanted it all.
@ellipsus-writes have promised to take a stand against AI, to preserve the privacy of the user, and they have made an incredible product already. Will it replace Google Docs at a business level? No. But will more and more people gradually switch over when they become aware that it's a far better option? Absolutely - and they've just gained one more.

Final chapter of proving to a mutual that I can write without angst.
This is the one where I realise in the middle that they may not be wrong, and give up in favour of dramatic resolution in the finale.
If I was a creator working on some piece of queer media I think I would take one look at the way shows like Steven Universe and She-Ra get treated and just not fucking bother. Y'all don't deserve queer creators and more importantly queer creators deserve better than y'all.
I would argue such media is worth making anyway, even if one would have to deal with terminally online idiots who are ignorant of the real problems facing queer people right now. Because I think that art could still resonate with people and mean a lot to them and make them feel seen.
Sure, not every peice of art is going to be perfect and I wouldn't even say She-Ra is completely without its problems. But... I'm glad it exsists, I'm glad that it helped people genuinely.
Now, if this Queer art is being made by some major corporation with its own iffy agendas and taking advantage of marginlised creators or some indie work is going to be another matter entirely...
But overally, I think making it is still worth it. It's better than the alternative, where we're being erased and ignored. There is always a better way after all and a better world is possible.
TLDR: We need the representation so that people know they can be themselves, and other people get exposure to seeing such people in equal standing.
I have told this story before and I will tell it again: my mentioning of watching She-Ra is what told someone I now consider among my best and closest friends that I was a safe person to reveal they were transitioning to.
All shows fight execs, and bad faith opinions, and tough markets, and reduced budgets, and and and.
But we need them.
We need kids to see heroines saving the day and getting the girl. We need to see male characters being soft, and affectionate, and allowed to openly express themselves. We need them to be shown androgynous characters, trans characters, bisexual characters, gender nonconforming characters. We need them to know that there are more options and variety to fill a cast than heterosexuals, a token gay character, and "just friends" banter.
Frankly, we need that for adults as well.
Fanfiction that’s just Hordak having a good day. Fanfiction where he isn’t actively falling apart or depressed. Fanfiction where he has a full 24 hours of calm.
