Honestly, as much as I love "Fiction isn't reality" as a proship belief, I also saw someone using "Fiction isn't education" and I think that might be even better. Because the idea of fiction affecting reality has a different meaning to everyone and is pretty easy for antis to try and twist against us, but "You should not assume that any piece of fiction is meant to instruct you on how to think or act" is a much more clear-cut message that I think is harder to dispute. I like it a lot. Fiction is not education.

it’s so magical and beautiful that there are sprawling interconnected cave systems carved deep into the earth by various geological forces and you don’t have to go in them. there are miles and miles of stone passageways in total darkness that require you to exhale all the air out of your lungs to squeeze through parts of them and you don’t have to be there. some of these squeezes are underwater and require cave divers to take off their oxygen tanks and push them through ahead of them and me i am above ground looking at the sky as we speak. there are untold subterranean wonders no human has ever seen and i will not be the one to discover them #grateful #blessed

yeah they mention this in the novels all the time. the funniest version of this is when Victorian novels have characters who are old grannies and aunties which means they were young women during the more socially liberal Georgian period and think all the conservative sentimentalism, modesty and layers are ridiculous

When I first started reading books featuring this historical generational gap (when I was in high school in the early 90s) I was like “LOL wild! Hilarious! Only imagine being in the situation of finding your own children or grandchildren to be maudlin Bible-thumpers and judgmental prudes!” And let me tell you: turns out it’s not as funny as I thought it would be.
