I do think the ability to emoji-react is a net win for human communication. not only does it give you an outlet for 'I see and acknowledge this but don't have a verbal response' but it also adds a pleasing alethiometer element to things
my coworker announces that he's off to the dentist. someone reacts with a tooth emoji. is this a statement of dentist solidarity? a wish for my coworker to return with more (or fewer?) teeth than he set out with? simple word association? who can say
today there was a “flash mob” set up by the seniors because it was their second to last day so they blasted the macarena over the loud speaker and did the dance in the main lobby but our headmaster knew about it so it wasn’t even funny but whilst walking past the elevator i found out why they really did this so called “flash mob”
it was a distraction
they put chickens in the elevator
This was wild because I forgot your high schoolers are called seniors and I thought you were talking about old folks
“it was their second to last day”
I thought the same, and I'm an American!
i hate it when people mistake "etymology" with "entomology." like, i know where they coming from but it still bugs me

I swear to God if I see one more take along the lines of "Lancelot was created by the French to cuck King Arthur--" I'm going to go scorched earth on the entire internet.
Yeah sure, let's just ignore Arthur's own infidelities in the French texts, and let's zero in on Lancelot and Guinevere and say they are the worst people ever cus "IT'S ADULTERYYYYYYYY!"
Gee whizz, gang, do you think there could be a reason for this double standard?
We wonders, precious, yess, we wondersss....
Welcome to my world... 🙄
To be fair, isn't the idea that Gwenivere and Lancelot are bad for cucking Arthur like in the vulgate version? Correct me if I'm wrong though as I haven't exactly read it yet and a physical copy is insanely expensive.
both very funny and awfully frustrating that people will be like “just because this character is aromantic doesn’t mean they can’t be romance-favourable / in a romantic relationship 🥺” and then the character in question is canonically like “i hate romance so much it’s unreal”
Is it not the definition of Aromantic that a person doesn't want a romantic relationship?
The modern American Democratic Party needs more rednecks and hillbillies to succeed, I am so serious. They need to do more to target rednecks and hillbillies and break down their white collar elitist image Fox News has been harping on. It’s crazy, it’s not true, the Republican Party is doing everything in its power to ensure the rich get richer and the poor and middle class get poorer but if they keep hearing “GOP is the party of backwoods middle Americans who work for a living.” type of slop slop and they turn on the television and see Gavin fucking Newsome, they’re going to keep voting red mindlessly.
And the thing is you see the mainstream candidates the Democratic Party is putting out and you’re like “Oh yeah, that is definitely a guy who’s parents went to college, that is a person who has never had to eat cup ramen to survive, there is nothing about that person that seems relatable.” if they’re going to keep pumping out ‘safe’ moderate white guys, they need to choose ones who look and sound like actual human beings.
wasn't that the guy from maine with the nazi tattoos
No, I don’t think being the son of a lawyer and a swanky restauranteur and the grandson of a modernist architect reflects the average redneck, not to mention being a prison guard at Abu Ghraib. They do try to do this periodically, push a candidate as a working class everyman who is very much not a reflection of a working class every man.
the issue is that the actual "working class everymen" right now would want to murder trans people for existing, hates lgbtq people in general in fact, & thinks lesbians just havent met a "good enough man" yet. oh also they're virulently racist. like i see where ur coming from but right now basically everyone outside the cities in America are kind of doomed
Hey, I think you might be massively classist and the exact reason that the Democratic Party and leftist movements keep failing to sway large swaths of the population. I say this as a transgender person from rural North Carolina. We exist everywhere and we have friends and family who love us. Automatically assuming that everyone who isn’t from a city and is working a blue collar job is racist, transphobic, homophobic and irredeemably stupid and backwards is a great way to make sure they stop listening to you.
Apart from the Gavin Newsom slander I think there is a real point here. The secret about trans issues politically is that I'm pretty sure most people who are like republicans aren't really that vehemently opposed to trans rights. The republicans tried campaigning on transphobia iirc in the 2022 midterms and lost horribly. This I reckon is not because pagenses aren't transphobic but because they are like maybe only vaguely so. Like it's a loosely held belief, and isn't a very important one.
Like the only people who care about trans rights are trans people, their loved ones, weirdos on the internet, and the more entitled parents of child athletes. In the physical world this doesn't actually affect them, and they have better things to vote for.
I feel like there might be some way to use the more Yimby and urbanist ideas to appeal to rural people. ByJove can correct me if it wouldn't work, but even though Urbanism is deeply concerned with the issues of cities particularly, and issues like freeway removal wouldn't appeal to people that live somewhere nobody decided it would be worth building a freeway to, there are issues that concern walkability I have heard of.
It ddepends how small of a small town we're talking. Not all of them will need internal transit. If somewhere is like a 30 minute diameter on foot, you can reach the center in 15 minutes and as long as they have a doctor and a grocery store and a pharmacy plus some extras on the side you've nearly already got a 15 minute city. Unfortunately a lot of these places have been hollowed out by places like Wal*Mart and guess what? A small town probably doesn't have enough people to support a big box store, and voilà, it closes the store, but only after outcompeting and all the businesses on main street close down.
This is an issue Urbanists should care about. We're supposed to care about walkability. Many of these towns will have been made before cars so their design architectually and planning-wise should be oriented towards walkability. What you need to do is get back small businesses and if urbanists can figure out a program to do that, and make it work somewhere we can win in small towns.
Also, don't think everybody in a small town is a NIMBY either. There are YIMBYs there too. I read a local news article about the Bay Area's northern periphery which is quite rural about how SMART, the local commuter rail had been hyped for its expansion. Windsor and Headsburg got it, the people at the site of the next station were excited for it, and more recently, Geyserville, a town of under 1000 people (in the UK this would be a village and would not qualify as a town). SMART had been legally prohibited from building a station there but people in Geyserville came forward to their representative in the state legislature and asked for the law to be changed. (source)
This should act as an example of the sort of thing that YIMBYs can get in small towns that we can't really get as well in the suburbs. I guess it just goes to show that villagers are not suburbanites.
Took a surprisingly long while to get.
I like to imagine King Arthur refused to believe he was adopted as a child because if your mean older brother said “You’re not even related to us, a wizard dropped you off at our house when you were a baby.” you would be sooooo skeptical.
But maybe less so if there was an actual wizard fucking around all the time?
Arthur refused to believe Merlin was his dad, which was what he thought Kay was implying.

Sir Kay is such a relatable character. Born with a repulsive casually mean personality that he cannot help. Trying his best. God’s chewtoy. Bullied by children. Keeps everyone fed. His squire & little brother became the king and he’s got to deal with that forever.
He is also, and this is important, very funny when he roasts the whole fucking court.
we need more mpreg in horror and less fpreg in horror. no more women terrifyingly pregnant, more men terrifyingly pregnant, preferably cis
As a cis man I can confirm it would be terrifyïng. I don't have the equipment for that to my knowledge. It would be legitimately spooky as in how do I get rid of this? I obviously can't actually birth it, so where does it come out?
i honestly don't really understand why "some people prefer watching gameplay online rather than playing games themselves" is treated as such a taboo when being a spectator is considered a pretty mundane way to engage with most sports, game shows, reality tv or even just like. chess.
Well I judge sports watchers for it too. Just go outside with a ball!
I was recently listening to Panic! at the Disco's first album and I noticed something, I noticed the line “boys will be boys, Hiding in estrogen” and interpreted it through the lens of a close friend of mine who was a trans man and in his childhood, before he realised he would play the sorts of games that boys played, and liked stuff like spiders and lizards and was dispite beïng afab and not knowing he was trans was definitely not feminine, boys will be boys, bringing spiders into the house and rolling in mud, splashing each other in the pool, and that sort of thing. It might be hiding in the estrogen their bodies makes but boys will be boys. They’re gonna do boy stuff, because they are actually boys.
I then looked up takes to see if people agreed or hadd anything to say on the subject and saw some people defending it from people who were allegedly accusing this line of beïng transphobic, and others sayïng the song is a direct adaptation of a novel andd it makes sense in the novel's context. That's fine but I feel we ought to consider the death of the author, (although death of the author goes both ways—if you are gonna ignore authorial intent in your analysis, you can't then use your death of the author analysis to speculate about the creätor having problematic opinions.). From a death of the author perspective while the fact it was intended to be an adaptation of a novel can be a foundation for intertextual analysis, I only know how to intertextually analyze fantasy and monster stories because I took a course on monsters in theater at college.
Anyway, the constant usage of she/her pronouns in the song makes sense if the subject is taken to be a trans man who is closeted or doesn't yet know themselves because third person pronouns are only really used to refer to third parties (hence why they are third person).
There's probably some more stuff I could analyse in the song but that's all I'm sure of for now.
I know I already made a post to this effect but it's so baffling to me when someone defends the fact that headphone jacks are slowly but surely getting phased out by smartphone manufacturers with some variations of "wireless headphones are more convenient anyway" bc like. If we're talking about convenience what I like about wired headphones is that they conveniently have a single plug that makes the same damn pair of headphones universally compatible with every single audio-output-capable device I own, from my phone and my computer to my fucking gameboy and my casette player, it doesn't get any more convenient than that.

let’s be real the pressure to use AI as an adult is exactly what they said the pressure the do drugs as a teenager would be like but the people that told us that caved immediately for the AI and definitely did not just say no
I will never stop sharing this photo. This is his official photo on government sites. This is the photo they took and he said “yeah, I guess that is as normal and serious as I could possibly look, this is tonally appropriate for a portrait of the director of the fbi”
This shit looks like a fucking mugshot!
