Let me explain:
Just before Christmas of 2025, a bunch of senators introduced a bill to repeal Section 230. Section 230 is the section that prevents companies from being liable for content created by its users. It is also the section that helps you stay anonymous online. Getting rid of it sounds like it could be good for taking down big tech but this actually will not help anyone let alone help children. Below is an infographic that explains how repealing it will affect us:
This bill was introduced, it has not gone through committee or Senate or house at all YET. However if it does end up being completely passed by all three and put into law, it could go into law immediately or January 1st 2027. THERE IS A CHANCE THAT LINDSEY GRAHAM OR ANY OTHER SPONSOR OF THIS BILL COULD TRY TO PUSH FOR MORE SUPPORT OR TO PASS IT IN COMITTEE IN FEBUARY. IM NOT SAYING IT WILL HAPPEN BECAUSE THERE ISNT MICH MOVEMENT AS OF NOW, BUT THERE IS A SMALL CHANCE! DO NOT PANIC
NOW IS THE TIME TO ACT HOWEVER!!
This is a bill that could potentially put us into danger of more censorship or surveillance. The Heritage Foundation is in support of this bill as well.
We cannot be quiet about this bill, especially because there are more like it that have potential to be introduced. If you want your right to anonymity and your right to free speech online, y'all need to act right the hell now.
Y'all need to start faxxing your reps and senators, you need to start emailing, calling, mailing, whatever TF, RIGHT NOW!!
We need numbers, we need people, we need to be loud and annoying yet polite, DO NOT GET VIOLENT!! We have seen what happened to the US servers of TikTok recently. Do not let that happen again

unsure of when kosa will be mentioned within the congress schedule, but support for kosa, as well as age verification, and the removal of section 230 has been ramping up within the past couple of months. there's a call-in today that needs to be taken care of. after today, if you can, please continue your callings, your faxes, and never stop spreading this around. we have to save the internet.

But while cancelling Nitro and boycotting Discord CAN be a form of protest, it sadly may not be effective. Why? Bc their hands are tied due to the recent trend in age verification bills worldwide.

This site helps send emails to your lawmakers to oppose certain Internet bills in the US, many of which would push age verification if passed HOWEVER, calling your lawmakers on the phone is most effective. If you're not in the US, you can still help by spreading the word. The only way to prevent age verification (On Discord and ALL other social media platforms) is to prevent the bills that are forcing it. Look at the site for more info

While there have been age verification laws put in place in other countries, in the US there are currently such laws in only three states, and I believe one is not in fact while there are appeals and lawsuits going on.
Discord is obeying in advance, which is the worst thing to do when dealing with encroaching authoritarianism.
And yes, age verification laws are a form of authoritarianism, using the power of government to quash free expression under a pretext, in this case the pretext of protecting children.
They have already started walking back the impact of their new rule and how it will be implemented, and that is a direct response to how many people have let them know that it's not OK. You have to keep doing that in addition to talking to your lawmakers about why age verification schemes are inherently dangerous without actually providing the claimed benefit, and that if children need to be protected from online content, that's the job of parents.

Mozilla, in its finite wisdom, embedded LLM bots into recent versions of Firefox for the vitally-important purpose of… naming tab groups. Now, some users are noticing CPU and power usage spikes caused by a background process called Inference.
Ugh. Reminder again for Firefox users to visit your about:config page, search for the browser.ml.chat.enabled key, and set that to false:
If yours says true then double-click it until it reads false.
Doing that turns off the AI chatbot features in Firefox, but also the stupid new LLM tab-naming feature that's rolling out.
if you want to turn off as much ai crap in firefox as possible, from this post on mozilla's connect forum, you should also set all these to false using about:config:
