"Infrastructural Transposition"_ Spyridon Kaprinis + Margarita Germanos + Larry Allison _ 2025-2026 The thematic focus for this year is Infrastructural Transposition: a critical exploration of vertical and horizontal infrastructural typologies, their latent spatial potential, and their architectural re-imagination. Within the city, infrastructure is too often relegated to the margins: positioned apart from other programmes due to issues of accessibility, aesthetics, and environmental impact (noise, pollution, scale, etc.). Vertical structures such as water towers and horizontal elements such as bridges are traditionally conceived as singular utilities, isolated, disused, or instrumental in linking only roads, highways, and rail lines. Yet, because of their scale, footprint, structural ambition, and interstitial positioning, these infrastructural systems harbour untapped opportunities for occupation, appropriation, and transposition. Through precedent studies, diagrammatic analysis, and transformative design exercises, students will critically reframe infrastructure as architecture, no longer isolated artefacts of utility, but symbiotic frameworks for social, cultural, and ecological inhabitation. Our ambition is to move beyond the commodified, objectified, or “luxurious” additions that dominate much of contemporary urban development. Instead, students will be encouraged to cultivate a site-specific and relational design methodology, one that challenges conventions of segregation and reveals how infrastructural typologies can act as scaffolds for new forms of urban commonality, continuity, and belonging.
