a canon compliant Jily fic set in their 6th year. Basically a development of two unstable teenagers messy relationship. its not really slowburn in terms of status but narratively they're still burning.

He couldn’t help but make a fool of himself in front of her every single time. But Lily had never once considered turning him down as "resisting," despite everyone else calling it that, talking about his charm and how cute he acted, how much he fancied her. He was...pretty resistible, really. ​Until he wasn't, at least.

Alphabetical. Just like the various encyclopedias lined up on the shelves in the house of the great-aunt Cassie. Alphabetical. Phineas had already sat in his chair at the Slytherin table, which was officially prepared for him— most of the time Bruce was proud of his surname, a wave of pride spreading from his chest every time he said his name.

Not right now though.

Bored of waiting, already tapping his foot on the ground with rhythmic movements, his nerves shot because of the boy standing way beside him. Sirius Black, whom his mother had strictly advised him to become closer friends with, had been sorted into Gryffindor — this was a major event because until that exact moment, when the sorting hat broke a silence of close to a minute, his sole purpose was to somehow become friends with Sirius Black and win an invitation for his family to the prestigious parties the Blacks gave at their house. Now everything was much more complicated— he had no idea how to treat him. Before saying a single word to Sirius Black, he needed to write a long letter to his mother and ask her repeatedly, over and over, what he should do now — and the list of names, still ordered by surnames, had not even passed D. Merlin knows how many more minutes he had to wait until Mulciber, his name being read, had Professor McGonagall place the Sorting Hat on his head.

“Evans, Lily.”

It could not be said that Bruce cared much. Like the rest of the unlucky first-years whose surnames did not start with one of the first five letters of the alphabet, his eyes were also glassily locked onto the single stool in the middle of the great hall. For him to finally focus his eyes on someone truly and gather his attention, he had needed to hear the surname Davies. For this one, it was enough to see the hair of the girl who emerged from within the crowd.

At first, he could not fully see the girl's face, but he didn't need to see it either. Bruce was surprised that he hadn't noticed her in the crowd before— cherry-colored curls burst outward from all over her scalp, long enough to almost reach the sleeves of the girl's robes, her hair swaying with every step she took toward the stool.

Bright. was the first thing he thought. Bright. Looks bright.

"Evans?" Raymond leaned towards his ear and whispered vaguely, "Do you know any Evans?"
