Chapter 18
Hi friends!
I know we mentioned this in the new chapter, but I just wanted to assure everyone that chapter 18 is finished and you won’t have to wait in suspense for too long. We wanted to make sure to finish 18 before posting 17 to make up for the fact that a year long hiatus ended with another cliffhanger.
So we will be dropping Chapter 18 on Saturday, September 21st, at 4:00p UTC (9:00a PST). Thanks for sticking with us! We still have 8 chapters to go!
Flaming marshmallow
The shaft of light descends for the first time in thousands of years and a voice like the peals of a million bells demands, “Aziraphale, Guardian of the Eastern Gate…what are you doing with your flaming sword?”
Aziraphale, terrified, lifts his face, gathering the Them around him just in case a Smiting is about to occur. Brian is sticky with melted sugar, Pepper and Wensley have chocolate bars clenched in their hands, and Adam is serenely unconcerned, chewing on a graham cracker.
“Making S’mores with the children, O Lord,” Aziraphale admits.
The light flickers briefly.
“Very well,” She declares. “Save me one.”
“Of course, Lord.”
The light vanishes. Aziraphale very carefully sets aside a marshmallow for the Holiest of Holies.
“I bet She likes it when you burn the outside so the middle gets extra squashy,” Adam advises.
This is hella cute. But s'mores don’t exist in England. They’d just be toasting marshmallows.
The commendation showed up on his desk in 1913, though it was backdated to the 1880s. Aziraphale took it quite seriously when it appeared; Heaven was not as free with its praises* as Hell, at least if Crowley’s racking up the letters was anything to go by.
* Excepting the obvious, of course.
It merited him with inventing something called the Graham Cracker, which Heaven seemed to believe was preventing all kinds of fornication and self-abuse over in the New World. Aziraphale, who was aware that Crowley was across the pond at the moment, pursed his lips and decided to book a crossing in order to investigate.
When he managed to source the by now quite popular Graham Cracker, along with some literature about how a bland vegetarian diet would control humans’ desires for the pleasures of the flesh and how the crackers in particular prevented masturbation amongst the young, he was horrified.
He found Crowley two days later, in a tent in a forest in New York. He was wearing a fetching olive skirt and blouse set, and surrounded by little girls in khaki dresses.
“What in Hell’s name* are you doing?” Aziraphale asked.
* Similar to the rules of Scrabble, it’s not a swear if it’s a proper name.
“Inventing the Girl Scouts!” Crowley said, beaming. Nearby, two little girls set something on fire. “Marvelous, my dears! Remember your fire safety lessons! Well, stealing them,” Crowley added to Aziraphale. “They’d already been invented elsewhere. It’s to teach young girls self-sufficiency and survivalist skills. It’s going to inspire all sorts of trouble when they grow up, you mark me.”
“Right, fine,” Aziraphale said, distracted. Another young girl was chopping wood with an axe almost as large as she was. “Look, I’ve a problem and I need your help workshopping a solution.”

on the one hand there are many aspects of academia that should be criticized but on the other hand i’m concerned about the rise of anti-intellectualism as a tool of fascism
Hey yo what the fuck does this say in English? Because if you can’t explain in layman’s terms you’re not doing a good job of getting your point across to everyone.
Damn how do you ever expect people to listen to you if you won’t even explain your philosophy in simpler terms… both y’all acting dumb
Oh my god, you’re going to hate me for this bullshit I’m about to add onto this post. this isn’t direct at you or anybody else. I don’t want you to think I’m attacking you as a person. I just feel very strongly about this subject (did two final papers on it) and I’m about to vomit up words like I’m suffering from food poisoning. I can’t put it in a small format because I’m long winded.
I’m with that one person up there, the original post is simply stated. the original post is about the incredibly indecipherable shit in college textbooks that’s written like a special code to keep poor people out of a discipline. there was an example floating around on tumblr that was just like wading through molasses to read.
if you know what an “intellectual” is and you know what “fascism” is.you should be able to use context clues.
THIS is literally exactly why they push anti-intellectualism; so people will not want to engage and discourage others from trying to get them to engage. this is why our media is about dumbing down a complex social issue into something “easy to understand.” This is why racism is portrayed as something that “goes both ways” and is about “not liking someone different from you.” All that did was uphold racism, not expose it for what it really is and that’s by design.
People always mention how really old movies from the 30s has common folk using a lot more words than we do today and it’s because during that time period from (industrial revolution in the late 1800s until the 1920s) academia was seeping into culture because people were enthusiastic about all the new technology and concepts.
People wanted to engage with science because engaging with the changing world gave them power over their lives. And that’s one reason why people started to realize workhouses for the poor and all the crazy human rights violating shit brought on by mass production was wrong and they they should do something. The idea that they had rights somehow got into their head. Enter Anarchism and the attempt to get a labor party started in America. That’s why they encourage anti-intellectualism; people start to wrestle for control over their lives.
I don’t know where I’d be today if tumblr had not exposed me to the language I needed to describe my oppression. Now that I can see that what happens to marginalized people has academia behind it, it’s much easier to mitigate the damages, prove it to others, and it gave me a voice. Now I have it in my mind that I have rights.
Preventing that kind of cultural change why fascists love anti-intellectualism. The other thing poor people were engaging with was the Humanities (literature, books, movies, media that becomes popular culture or deeply embedded etc.,). and that meant new ideas from social outsiders (like first generation children of immigrants, farmers with books, and black people) were gaining traction and getting popular.
The roaring 20s were what they were because of this. It’s not a coincidence the Harlem Renaissance happened during this time and got white people into jazz, black slang and white women became flappers trying to emulate the black women they’d seen. All of this cultural crossover was very threatening and that’s when stuff like Prohibition, Woodrow Wilson’s entire presidency, and forcing kids to pledge allegiance to the flag started happening.
(And curiously, these motherfuckers introduced stiff, froam white culture shit like square dancing to stop black music from taking over completely. Like they made up a false folk-way just like they did with Jim Crow. A folk-way is a traditional way of doing things.)
They needed to re-indoctrinate a liberated society and get it back to social (and economic) conservatism and hardline segregation again.
but now people are like, “if you can’t explain it to me w/o “big words” you’re the stupid one.” there were no big words in the original post. Racism and misogyny and complex issues and complex words get used.
this is also why a lot of western culture is “i don’t know and i don’t wanna know”.

"Your police [steal] blankets from people that you force to live on the streets, while you raid protests and criminalize people that are standing up for rights of migrants," said Pia Klemp.
“The captain of a controversial ship that saved migrants in the Mediterranean Sea has refused to accept a medal for her work.
Pia Klemp, who is German, gained attention for rescuing thousands of stranded migrants with her crew as part of the nongovernmental organization Sea Watch International. For her efforts, she reportedly faces up to 20 years in prison in Italy, where the hard-line anti-immigrant government accused her of assisting illegal immigration.
In a Facebook message published Tuesday night, Klemp announced that she was rejecting the Grand Vermeil Medal, which the city of Paris awards for bravery. She told Mayor Anne Hidalgo that the city was brimming with hypocrisy.
“Your police [steal] blankets from people that you force to live on the streets, while you raid protests and criminalize people that are standing up for rights of migrants and asylum seekers. … You want to give me a medal for actions that you fight in your own ramparts,” Klemp wrote in the scathing post.
“It is time we call out hypocrite honorings and fill the void with social justice,” she said.
She went on to say that people don’t need medals. “We do not need authorities deciding about who is a ‘hero’ and who is ‘illegal,’ ” she said. “In fact they are in no position to make this call, because we are all equal.”

IT WAS KING SEJONG, WHO ORDERED HIS ROYAL SCHOLARS TO CREATE THIS ALPHABET SO READING AND WRITING COULD BE ACCESSIBLE TO EVERYONE, EVEN THE PEASANTS. IT WAS PURPOSELY DESIGNED TO BE EASY TO LEARN.

Okay but for anyone who legit wants to know how to calculate it correctly:
The elbow joint on average rests a couple inches higher than the navel, so if you measure how long the distance is from the middle of the shoulder to that point then you have the length of the upper and fore arms!
So if anyone’s wondering about legs too, the simplest rule of thumb is that the length from the top of the leg to the knee is equal to the distance between the top of the leg and the bottom of the pectorals:
And I wanna stress that when i say “top of the leg” i’m not talking about the crotch (please don’t flag me tumblr it’s an anatomical term) i’m talking about the point where the femur connects to the pelvis, which is higher up on the hips:
It’s easier to see what I’m talking about in this photo of a man squatting:
So yeah if you use that measurement when using this technique you should get fairly realistically proportioned legs:
But remember! messing with proportions is an important and fun part of character design! Know the rules first so you can then break them however you please!
HOW THE HELL DID I FIND THIS POST OMG
Licherally in the midst of drawing a guy and crying at how bad the arms are. Thanks Tumbles
August 15 2019 - An ICE prison guard rams a blockade of Jewish antifascist protesters in Central Falls, Rhode Island, after which his colleagues come over to pepper spray them. An eyewitness account:
Tonight I planned to be arrested protesting at the Wyatt Detention Facility in Central Falls, RI. I wore comfortable layers. I made sure to not drink too much water. I left my phone and keys with a volunteer in a baggie with my name on it. The only things in my pockets were $40 and a photo ID. Four hours later, I watched the ambulances gather up the seriously injured. The action was organized by Never Again is Now. We marched from Jenks Park, singing, chanting, praying. We gathered outside of the facility, about 40 of us who had planned to get arrested, and large crowd of other protesters. We delivered a letter with demands, and when, as expected, the demands were not met, we lined up outside the two entrances to the Wyatt, one to block pedestrian access and the other to block vans. However, because they knew we were coming, they had rescheduled all prisoner transfers so there were no vans coming in or out.
So we decided to relocate to the adjacent parking lot, to block guards from leaving when their shift was over. There was a large entrance and a smaller entrance off to the side. At first I was with the big group at the front entrance. Then a car started heading towards the side entrance, so some of us broke off to block that exit. The person in that car was a woman, and she left her engine on the whole time during what followed. At the main entrance, at about 9:30pm, a guard in a black pickup truck roared down the street, and rammed directly into the line of protestors on that side. Two people were injured. Then, WITHIN SECONDS, a horde of guards came streaming out of the prison and pepper-sprayed the protesters, including the injured. Let me be clear: there is no way that they could have gotten there that fast unless there was some communication ahead of time from the guy in the truck about his plan. Many people were seriously injured by the amount and manner in which the pepper spray was used. Prison guards absolutely do not have the authority to use their pepper-spray, a weapon that is part of their job, against civilians outside a prison. And none of the protesters was on prison grounds; we were across the street in a parking lot, which was adjacent to a soccer and baseball field. Earlier in the evening, there had been kids playing there. On our side, we were sitting across the entrance to the parking lot, facing outwards. The woman was still behind us with her lights and engine on. We heard screams but could not see the other group. At that moment, the woman in the car behind us revved her engine several times, to intimidate us into moving. We stood up and faced her. We did not move, and we wanted her to look us in the eye if she was going to run us over. She did not move. This was a premeditated attack. There were both local and state cops in the area - they were there all night keeping an eye on things, but they would do loops, they were not always right in front. The guard watched and waited for a moment when none of the 3 cars that were patrolling were within line of sight to carry out his attack. But he did coordinate with his fellow guards inside so that they were ready in an instant to pour out of the facility and across the street with their pepper spray. When the local cops came back, it was pretty clear that they were PISSED at the guards - I do want to say that in fairness. I do not believe that the local cops were part of the conspiracy. Honestly, this is going to bring such a stream of crap to Central Falls in the coming weeks, and this makes their life very difficult. National attention. But at the same time, they did not immediately arrest the driver. All they would say is that there would be an investigation. When it became clear how seriously injured some folks were, the rest of the protest was cancelled, including our group on the far side of the parking lot. So I came home with the $40 still in my pocket.I joined this action because I’ve reached a point where I look at everything I’ve done so far and there’s no risk, no personal cost. If I look at this moment in history, and all I can say is that I posted some stuff and waved some signs, but was unwilling to take any risk or do anything that might cost me, I simply cannot live with that. ICE is perpetrating crimes against humanity. I will not be a person who looked the other way, who hoped it would go away. […] EDIT [the next morning when I can speak more clearly]: For clarity, I don’t think the Central Falls police were involved in the planning of the attack, but they were very involved in covering it up by not arresting the guard immediately and in the way they responded to witnesses. Earlier in the night, they blatantly lied to us about who the woman was in the car behind us in an effort to get us to leave. All cops are complicit. Also, by now I’m sure everyone reading this has seen the video and the other news coverage and they made it more clear: he was outside the parking lot, ramming inwards. It’s not like he was inside and frustrated with us blocking him. Please, if you talk about this story, make sure to ask the question: if they treated us with this level of violence, a group of civilian protesters with cops not that far away and everyone having a cellphone camera, what do you think they are doing to those detained in the facility who have no way to get the word out about their treatment? One of the items that Never Again is Now was protesting about this facility was the lack of transparency and proof that detainees rights are being met. After last night, it’s not enough for the Wyatt to just cancel the ICE contract. The whole facility needs to be shut down. Tell your RI senators and reps: No for-profit prisons in RI!

You know what Good Omens does NOT get enough credit for? How it never, not once, makes gender presentation the butt of a joke.
Crowley presenting as female to be Warlock’s Nanny? The way this was filmed, acted, and written wasn’t made to be funny whatsoever. She was stunning, I loved the hat!
Pollution using they/them pronouns while the postman used the gender neutral honorific of sir for them? What’s there to make fun of? They’re royalty.
Archangel Michael, who has a traditionally male name, played by a female actress? Never questioned.
Lord Beelzebub’s androgyny? Only respect for the Lord of Hell.
Aziraphale sharing Madame Tracy’s body? Crowley recognized his angel and accepted it no problem. He was right about the dress too, it did suit him!
Crowley’s pure, unfiltered non-binary/gender-fluid energy in general? Fucking fabulous. Who could seriously make fun of this demon’s style? As someone once pointed out to me, you could swap him with Tilda Swinton and I’d see no difference. What an icon.
Good Omens is the first big show I’ve seen to basically avoid transphobia all together when the opportunity presented itself, and even say fuck you to the gender binary as a bonus. If the biggest binary in all the universe, Heaven and Hell, don’t give a damn about it then why should you?
Thank you! That was definitely what we were going for. I’m not certain we always achieved it – or at least, people didn’t always seem to see that was what we were doing. (It made me sad when a few people on Twitter reacted to Crowley-as-nanny as if it was meant to be a transphobic man-in-a-dress joke.)
For our angels and demons, it was intensely liberating having male and female actors auditioning for the same roles, and just picking the ones who we felt nailed the characters best.
Also, can I just hear a wahoo for the wonderful Archangel Uriel, Gloria Obianyo?

Arrested for what! WTF! Are you kidding me? He’s not doing anything wrong! Sickening!
Here’s an article about him - it’s from early July 2019.
“I will stay active for as long as I’m able to stay active — and I’m at peace.”
He wasn’t arrested just for walking around with a sign, though, he and a friend planned a sit-in in which they blocked the doors of a federal building housing an ICE courtroom to protest the imprisonment, neglect and abuse of migrant children separated from their parents. Getting arrested was part of the point - they were held for about an hour and a half and issued citations for a fine. He said he would not pay the fine and was seeking a court date to get further public attention for the issue. He’s deliberately using his privilege as an older white man to protest for people who have less power and are at more risk.
Go Alan Dornan!

I doodled this at the laundromat about a year ago and it was ridiculously popular, so I thought I’d put together a less scribbly version.

Wow those moves look like someone who’s childhood best friend was an airbender
…Shit, you’re right.
That spin he does. That is an airbendery move.
Literally the exact same move Aang pulls when he gets off his glider (cant find a gif but like… I promise)
This shows attention to detail was unreal.
Even the fall backwards! That looks like the exact kind of thing a fun loving Airbender kid would do while showing off gliders and airbending proficiency.
the best benders in this show tend to be the ones who adapt elements of other bending techniques. Bumi has some airbender-y movements, Zuko and Iroh use some Air and Water movements, even Katara tends to use some earthbender looking moves when bending ice
Meanwhile Toph just took earthbending and cranked it all the way up to 11.
Everyone else: The spice of variety! The four elements make mine stronger! Ballerina time!
Toph:….meTal….bendy bendy

the native tribe that owns the area was honored and that’s all that matters tbh
She asked the people who matter.
It is the year after the Battle of Hogwarts. School is starting again. And the thestrals are confused by all of the attention they are getting.
oh
oh no
you BITCH
WHY IS THIS NOT A THING I’VE CONSIDERED?
No. NO. Sit the fuck down, we’re going to talk about this.
The year after the Battle of Hogwarts. Students nervously climbing into the carriages (no first years, thank god, no one wants to think about that) and eyeing the creatures in front of them. Is this some sort of stunt? Like a memorial?
Hagrid showing the fifth years the thestrals. He wonders if he should, if this is asking too much, but he thinks it would be wrong to keep the truth from them. There are more in the class who can see them than those who can’t.
He wakes to a knock on his door after nightfall. For a second he thinks it’s those three again, but no, that’s not right. He shuffles to the door, holding Fang down behind him, and finds a wide-eyed second year on his doorstep. They came to ask about the horses.
Hagrid isn’t one to turn someone away, so he ushers the child inside and puts the kettle on. He explains they’re not quite horses. They’re gentle creatures, really. Yes, you have to…you have to have seen things to see them, too. But they wouldn’t do anyone harm.
Can he see them? Why, yes, he can, has for the longest time. Ever since his Dad…ever since…
Hagrid stops for a moment, unable to speak. But the child at his table waits patiently, understanding. This is not the first time they have heard someone’s voice catch on the words. It’s reassuring, somehow, hearing an adult share the same problem.
They drink a pot of tea before Hagrid sees the kid back to the school, Fang loping along beside them. It’s reassuring to have these two massive, almost comical forms tromping to the front door. Safe.
Hagrid warns not to go out after dark again. If you want to visit, come along any time in the day.
The next time he opens his door, there are three. Third years, this time. They know a little more, more than they ought to, he thinks. Makes him feel nostalgic.
He sits them down as before and has a long talk. They’re less open, keep glancing at each other as they speak, but he can see they have questions. It’s just a matter of waiting them out.
This goes on for weeks. Hagrid sees a steady stream of students at his door until he’s sure at least half the school has walked across his mat at some point. One day McGonagall approaches him and suggests a change in the curriculum. Perhaps it wouldn’t hurt to move a few things up on the syllabus? If he’s willing, of course.
Hagrid leads more students into the forest. He sees their faces, eyes wide with fear, as they see the creatures in the light of day. He patiently explains that they’re quiet animals, don’t much like a lot of noise. Easier to manage, certainly. That’s why they pull the school carriages.
He finds taking them once isn’t enough. Students keep asking to see the thestrals. Bewildered, he takes them back again and again, watching as the kids sidle up to stroke the long, black wings. They hold out bits of meat to the sharp beaks and whisper calming words under their breath.
Gradually, the looks of fear subside into something else. More than once he hears someone say these things are all right. Kids show up at his doorstep to ask about what he does and what kinds of animals he’s seen. Someone even says they might like to be a teacher like he is someday.
He doesn’t know what to say to that. His eyes glisten and he makes a sound like a trumpet as he blows his nose. He hears a giggle when he knocks over the umbrella stand with his elbow.
Things have changed, he thinks. He leads children into the forest because they ask, not because they’ve been punished. Students are clambering to get into his classes when it used to be seen as a last resort. People don’t stare up at him with suspicion or fear when he walks the halls these days.
They aren’t afraid of monsters anymore. They fear the people who become them.
holy shit, woman
