I always say that the thing which sets Sargent apart as a portrait artist is that he draws/paints literally every subject - no matter their gender, social position, life vs representational drawing etc - like he is right that minute realising he's desperately in love with them. And it rules every single time.
prev tags:, fuck you and your grasp of light and your markmaking. john., is incredibly and completely correct, the alligators are fucking WATERCOLOUR, fuck you john., sargent, inspiration, style, lighting, artworks
You don’t get on the bus and tell the driver where you’re heading for a perfect customized commute. You take the bus going vaguely in the right direction. You pick the available option that gets you closest to where you’re trying to get to.
And if the stop that gets you closest to where you're trying to get to isn't very close, then you take the bus that gets you as close as you can, and then work with everyone else who gets off at that last stop to build something that will take you even closer.
But you're all going to be more successful if you use the bus to get as far as you can first. And maybe you can use the bus ride to convince your fellow passengers that your destination is one that they should choose too.
But saying, "This bus will take me miles closer to where I want to be, but it doesn't drop me off right at the door so I won't take it at all," makes your own life harder. And if enough people who would take that bus all say the same, it will look like no one wants that and they'll cut the route altogether.

i write RPF, how do i deal with a person becoming problematic? not asking about cancel culture (as in, my problem isn't about what i think others might think, the fandom is pretty divided on it so no one will be happy anyway). my problem is that i'm personally uncomfortable with him now and don't want to write him anymore, but he's in most of my WIPs. please don't try to guess who i'm talking about. it's not a very recent issue, i'm just dealing with the RPF part of it now. it's all so complicated!
Whether you're writing about a real person or writing about a fictional person, sometimes your blorbo ends up giving you the ick. New information is revealed or circumstances change in some way, and you just can't think about them anymore without feeling bad.
The reason I'm equating these situations is because I don't want you to think this is a moral choice you're making. It's not about whether you're a good person or a bad person.
The choice you're making is about whether or not you want to continue working on a piece of art that doesn't feel the same way that it used to.
I see a few options you have, and maybe the blog can supply a few more:
You could set those WIPs aside for a while and see if your feelings change with having a little bit of distance from whatever is bringing this discomfort up in you.
You could continue the WIPs now just to complete them and stop thinking about them.
You could abandon the WIPs (and if you've already started posting them, you could orphan them too if you want to).
You could take the plot idea and use it for a different fandom instead.
You're allowed to stop writing a thing when you don't like it anymore. And if you stop writing it, you don't have to explain why. You don't need to make a post or leave an author's note (unless you want to). You can just slip out silently through a metaphorical side door, never to be heard from again.
Remember that writing these stories is a thing that you do for fun. If you're dreading it or unhappy doing it or uncomfortable with it, then you can stop. Your happiness comes first, anon. 💗
As someone who has been in and around hockey fandom a while, I have experienced similar things to this, multiple times, so first off, know that you aren't alone! and there's no magical right answer, especially since there are many levels of ick that a person or character can give.
Some solutions I have seen or done:
Delete everything with them in it
Change their names and dub them OCs (most effective in AUs)
Go back and edit to switch them to a different person (most effective for side characters/small parts)
Abandon the stories without comment, but leave them up
Abandon the stories with a note advising of their inclusion for those who want to avoid them
Abandon the stories with a chapter of assorted remaining writing related to them and a note that you're abandoning it
Orphan them to remove all connection to you without removing the stories altogether
Turn off comments on the story so no one can bother you about something you will no longer work on
I have two fixes, one if you care more about your own feelings about it and one if you care more about your readers.
If you don’t want ANYONE to read it, add the work to a private collection. I actually have a collection I named “deleted works” where nobody can see what I put in there. That way, I still have it, if I change my mind. I haven’t deleted it or lost anything. Just hidden it.
If you don’t mind if others read it, set it to anonymous. Quick, easy, reversible
The big thing here is reversible. I’ve deleted my fanfics before — from my personal documents even. It’s one of the only things I truly regret doing. I can never get those back. If you hide stuff instead of deleting, you have a chance to change your mind as you change as a person. Or to use it for something else entirely.

Transphobia is about to be signed into law in the UK. We can fight this.
I am begging the UK trans community and its allies to attend the Mass Lobby at Parliament on June 25th, 11am-4pm, organised by Trans Solidarity Alliance.
Last year we broke the record for an LGBT+ mass lobby of Parliament. Will you help us break it again? Join us on 25th June 2026 to demand be
The new EHRC Code of Practice pushes trans people out of toilets, hospital wards, and community spaces. It normalises gender policing based on appearance and stereotypes. It becomes statutory guidance in the UK by the end of June.
Trans people are now legally their assigned gender at birth and must join gendered spaces accordingly, but if they are perceived as their lived gender, they can also be ejected from those spaces. The guidance says: either break the law, or don’t pass too well.
A mass lobby is where you invite your MP to discuss your concerns with you in-person. Ask your MP to:
Demand full parliamentary scrutiny, debate, and use their free vote on the EHRC Code of Practice.
Support any motions rejecting the EHRC guidance. As of June 4th, Labour MP Nadia Whittome has submitted a prayer motion - Early Day Motion 240.
Write to Bridget Phillipson, the Minister for Women and Equalities about our concerns
Your MP does not have to be an ally, they do not have to respond to your email for you to show up and greencard them (details below the cut.) What matters is that as many people as possible show up.
I cannot stress this enough: Showing up in person matters. It is much more effective than petitions, emails, and letters.
It is a horrible, stressful time, and I am so sorry if you're trans and live in the UK. But I was at last year's mass lobby and the line for greencarding alone stretched around the back gates. It was a record breaking mass lobby and made us impossible to ignore. Let's do even better this time. Details under the cut:
Worried about what to say?
Bring your personal worries about transphobia being signed into law, and trans friends being excluded from public spaces. You are a living person who deserves dignity. Remind your MP of that. You will also get guidance and brochures from Trans Solidarity Alliance that outlines our demands. This is mine from last year.
Money issues?
Trans Solidarity Alliance provides a travel bursary that you can sign up for via the link.
Got a refusal or no response from your MP?
Come anyway! You can request a same-day appointment with your MP through a process called greencarding. They will come and see you if they’re already in Parliament. Even if they don’t, they’re made acutely aware of your cause because you showed up in person. This is my greencard from last year.
Here is the EHRC Code of Practice in full. It's a tough read, but some highlights are:
Organisations can’t provide trans-inclusive, single-sex services, or they risk being sued for discrimination.
e.g. domestic violence support for women including trans women, men’s rugby group including trans men (12.68).
Trans people will have nowhere safe to pee.
If you’re a trans man, businesses can't allow you to pee in the men's, and you can also be ejected from women’s bathrooms if you’re perceived as a man. Vice versa for trans women. EHRC suggests a ‘third space’ bathroom, which is discriminatory and unworkable for most businesses. (13.130-133)
Sports organisations must exclude trans people from single-sex competitions (13.73).
A women’s only sports competition must exclude trans women because of their biological advantage or face potential lawsuits (13.74), but a trans man who has undergone testosterone treatment can also be excluded based on fairness rules (13.81).
Trans women are stripped of the legal definition of ‘lesbian’, and therefore no longer have legal protections if they’re discriminated against on the basis of sexual orientation. (2.50, 2.92).
Here is the Good Law Project's better explanation of the EHRC Code.
I have also made a PDF printout of QR codes for the government petition, email your MP tool, and mass lobby link to pass around your communities. DM me and I'll send it to you.
From the Nashville Zoo’s fb page! Here’s the petition, please please please take a moment to add your name (even if you’re not from Nashville!). If you are from Tennessee, contact your representatives and make it clear that the people do not want this data center. This is an AZA accredited zoo which is home to several species of critically endangered animals, we NEED to protect it. Make your voice heard!

"character deserved better" (but they were never going to get it that's the stuff great tragedies are made of) vs "character deserved better" (but the writers really blew it)
