Saturday Morning Reflection: The Expectations Children Carry
Children develop their understanding of the world long before they can fully explain it.
Through everyday experiences, they learn what boundaries look like, how authority functions, when rules are enforced, and what behaviors are considered acceptable. Over time, those lessons become assumptions that influence how they approach new environments.
This week, a routine trip to the store reminded me that behavior is often less about the moment itself and more about the expectations that have been shaped over time.
Whether at home, at school, or in the community, consistency helps children build a clearer understanding of responsibility, accountability, and self-regulation.
As summer begins for many families, perhaps the question is not simply what children are learning, but what they are learning to expect.
