What are some solutions to struggles students face who are of low-socioeconomic status?
Students of low socioeconomic status should be considered when teachers are designing lesson plans and when they are considering what course materials they want to use. For example, during the instructional phase how can you design your lesson plan to use technology only in the classroom? To use technology in the classroom and outside the classroom the technology must fit certain standards. The technology must be, active, constructive, collaborative, and goal orientated. As teachers, we should try to come up with ways for technology use to hit these standards in the classroom. When it comes to homework and take-home assignments, try to come up with other ways to hit these same standards without the use of technology. This way, students who are low-socioeconomic status who do not possess technology at home are able to complete the assignment.
For example, you can have the students complete a math related game on the iPad in class and create questions for the students to reflect on the game at home. This way, all the students are completing the technology use component at school. If teachers center their instruction this way, students who are low-socioeconomic status will not struggle to complete the homework assignments, because of lack of technology at home. Another way you can use technology effectively in your classroom is, giving the children some readings to complete (readings should be on paper, or in a textbook) based on the technology the students used in class. There are a lot of ways you can integrate technology into your classroom, but just make sure you integrate the technology in ways that are effective for students who are low-socioeconomic status.
What are some struggles in school students who are of low-socioeconomic status face?
Students who have low socioeconomic status are expected to take the same standardized tests as their peers, yet sometimes the students do not posses the same resources as their peers in order to take the tests effectively. For example, many times teachers will require their students to access the internet when they get home to study for assessments, or to complete basic classroom homework. If a child is of low socioeconomic status, it is likely the child cannot afford basic materials such as a laptop, or other technological tools. This is known as technological inequity, or the disconnect between technology in school and technology at home.
How can you help students who are low socio-economic status during your instruction as a teacher?
Typically children who are low-socioeconomic status live at, or below the poverty line. When educating children who are low socioeconomic status, your learning environment should be warm with compassion and understanding. Children who are low-socioeconomic status may not have parents at home all the time, because the parents are typically working low-paying part time jobs to make ends meet. That is why it is important for you as the teacher to give those children a lot attention they may not receive home. It is important for you to take care of their social, educational, physical, and emotional needs during instruction, which are typically a lot greater compared to some of the other children in your classroom. For example, children who walk into your classroom who are low socioeconomic status sometimes may not even have enough money to eat breakfast, lunch, or dinner when they are at home. They also may not have running water that they can drink at home. This is something you should keep in mind in your classroom and you should provide your classroom with snacks daily and drinks (like water) so that every child is well nourished. During your instruction, you should every so often offer all the children in your classroom food and drinks (that way you are not singling out those who are low socioeconomic status). How can I child truly learn if they are dehydrated, or not well nourished?
One way you can provide for these children educationally is, offer these children the educational support they may not receive at home during your instruction. During your instructional time as you weave your way through the phases of instruction, you should rotate around the room. When you rotate, focus specifically on the children who are low-socioeconomic status. Make sure you do so in a non-obvious way, so these children do not feel singled out. You should make sure they are on task and that they understand the concepts you are going over in class. It may make your lesson plans a bit longer, but in the long run it will pay off. You can and should be each child’s educational support if they are not receiving that support at home. It might be challenging to handle students who are low-socioeconomic status, but in the end if you handle these students correctly during instruction, you can impact these students positively in a variety of ways.
