I'm seriously thinking about an AU/fanfic where Ruby, after the fight against Jaune in Volume 9, runs away from the scene and instead of ending up in Neo's mansion (??? castle (???, she ends up in a strange place, typical of Ever After, a place where wishes come true. I imagine it as a kind of house of mirrors.
Ruby, sad, feeling alone and carrying an unbearable weight of responsibility and guilt, becomes an easy target for the owner of that place, who subtly manipulates her into making a wish.
Ruby just wants to feel like herself again. And above all, she wants Penny to be alive. The weight of the consequences of her actions and the reality she lives in only becomes truly tangible when she discovers what happened to her friend.
Ruby's image is distorted in the mirror, rippling like water. The colors blend and warp until Penny's figure begins to take shape in front of her. Just seeing her brings tears to Ruby's eyes.
Penny's image emerges from the mirror, so solid and real that Ruby thinks she is dreaming.
They embrace, and Ruby bursts into tears.
Penny doesn't know where she is, or what's going on, or why Ruby is crying so desperately, but she comforts her with such genuine kindness and gentleness that Ruby is unable to stop crying.
Later, the rest of the group finds Ruby wandering around, holding “Penny's” hand, completely unwilling to part with her.
The reunion with the group takes place, apologies, attempts at reconciliation, explanations, blah blah blah. Ruby isn't really paying attention or interested, she does everything she can to hide what happened, now with a constant distraction at her fingertips.
The group is happy to see “Penny” again, but they all feel uncomfortable and suspicious of her.
Then things start to happen, almost like in a body-snatcher story. “Penny” is Penny... but at the same time she isn't. Something about her seems strange, her attitude is slightly different, she says things Penny would never say, she reacts in ways that are not typical of her. Ruby, however, doesn't notice, or simply refuses to.
