So, youâre a boy, and you think you like me. If you want me to like you, youâre going to have to do the following as a minimum:
Try to get to know me - If youâre going to message me or talk to me in person it would be nice if you made a bit of an effort to get to know me. Getting compliments about my eyes or hearing about how much you want to kiss me etc. is very flattering, thank you, but I was kind of hoping you were interested in more than just my looks. It would be nice to be asked questions about myself, my opinions, my life. If youâre not interested in my answers, then why should I be interested in you.Â
Tell me about yourself - How am I meant to know if I like you back if you never tell me anything about yourself. Why did you start this conversation if all your responses are going to be less than 3 words long and consist mainly of âhahaâ and âlolâ. If I have to make all the effort to keep the conversation going, Iâm going to give up very quickly.Â
Be open to having different opinions - I find it interesting meeting people with different opinions to me. Maybe I can learn something. Tell me why, letâs have a deep conversation, whether itâs about a TV show, religion, politics, etc. Donât just agree with everything I say. However, donât be one of those people that thinks their opinion is fact and that anyone with a different opinion to you is just dumb and poorly educated. Making me feel stupid for having a different opinion to you is not going to get you anywhere.
Treat me as your equal - Iâm not the kind of girl who expects you to pay for everything and treat me like Iâm the only person in your life. But donât take advantage of that. Iâm also not the kind of girl that is going to put up with you treating me like your trophy wife/maid/sex toy. Also, if Iâm going to shave my legs and wear a nice dress for you, could you at least shower and put on a new shirt.

My Self-Esteem is Basically Non-Existent Right Now
I went on a date yesterday and now I feel like an idiot.Â
Last year, whilst I was still with my ex-boyfriend my neighbour tried to ask me out. I was flattered but I was in a relationship so I left things. During the last couple of months of my relationship, when things were pretty bad, the neighbour contacted me again. I told him I was still in a relationship, but I didnât exactly discourage him from contacting me. Just before I broke up with my ex, I felt bad for messaging the neghbour whilst I had a boyfriend and I felt bad leading him on, so I told him he shouldnât like me and I deleted all of his messages so I wouldnât be tempted to contact him.Â
The neighbour didnât contact me again until last week. I thought I was finally in a good place and as I am now single I decided to accept his invitation for a date. I knew he was 45 (Iâm 23) but I liked the way he made me feel so I told myself it wasnât an issue, age is just a number etc. etc.Â
About an hour into the date I was seriously regretting my decision. He was driving me in his van to some random cafe and we still werenât there. I was wishing Iâd done more than left a note at my house with his name, address, and our date location and time on it! He also looked a lot older than I remembered and I just felt super awkward and stupid. Once we got to the cafe, everything got better, I felt less awkward and we were just chatting and it was fine. I actually started to enjoy myself. The journey home went by a lot faster and when he dropped me off he kissed me on my cheek (he wanted a proper kiss, but thatâs all he got).Â
In the first hour after the date I was happy and considering going on another date with him but then I started thinking (maybe overthinking) and now I feel like crap. I think the age gap is a major issue for me. I just didnât feel like we were equal. He was paying for everything, even though I tried to offer, but as a poor student itâs kind of hard for me to insist! Also, he was the one driving me around, he was the one who knew where we were going, he knew all about the places around us, and I knew nothing. I didnât like not feeling like I had any control. Also, my self-esteem is pretty low. Iâd agreed to go on the date because he made me feel interesting and attractive. But afterwards, I was questioning his motives. Does he actually like me for who I am, or because of my age? Iâve been told I look young for my age, so Iâm questioning why someone of his age would be interested in me unless that wasnât part of the appeal?
Part of the reason I ended things with my ex, was because I felt like he wasnât interested in me as a person. I felt like he only cared about me when I was willing to have sex with him. Iâm worried that this guy is the same. Only interested in me for my age and my looks, not my personality.Â
Update: He messaged me this evening and I replied with no emojis or kisses and I think he got the message, said heâd leave me alone and wished me luck with my future. That was easier than I was expecting.Â
Update 2: Maybe not so easy as expected... he messaged me again today (3 days after the date) wanting to know what I didnât like about him. Told him it was the age gap, he said he still wanted to see me, I asked why, he wrote me an essay (okay, well, a long paragraph) about how much he liked my eyes and my hair and my body and my bum... so yep, kind of flattering in some ways, but it also confirms the fact he isnât interested in me as a person, just as a body.Â
It was my ex-boyfriendâs birthday yesterday and I wanted to wish him happy birthday but I didnât want to ruin his day if heâs been trying to forget about me.Â
I still care about him, even though Iâm no longer in love with him and donât want to be in a relationship with him. When we broke up I told him I wanted to be friends and I meant it. He said he wanted a couple of months without contact from me to get his head around things, so I just let him know that Iâd be here if/when he decided to contact me again. Since then he hasnât contacted me. Maybe itâs selfish of me, but I just want to know heâs okay.Â
He has no friends here in the city and literally all he does is go to his lectures, eat food, and play video games. At least that was what he was like in December and his total reliance on me for social interaction was extremely draining and part of the reason why I broke up with him. Iâve been hoping that the break up was good for him and forced him into making an effort to make friends and actually interact with new people, but Iâm not sure it has.Â
Iâm worried that heâs spending a lot of time alone and may have even spent his birthday alone. He didnât even have a single person write on his Facebook wall on his birthday! Maybe, Iâm worrying about nothing, because obviously I only have social media to base my worries on, but I canât help it.Â
Iâm really conflicted about whether to contact him. On the one hand, he told me he wanted some time without contact from me, and Iâm the one that broke up with him, so Iâm probably not someone he wants to hear from. On the other hand, heâs living alone in a flat in a city where he has no friends, which canât be good for his mental health. What should I do?
Recently Iâve been revising for my second year exams and today, my latest topic was contraception so I decided to share my own personal experience with the world!Â
I havenât been sexually active for very long but after only a couple of weeks of using condoms I knew I needed to use something else. Not only are they expensive but it was a pain having to stop in the heat of the moment to apply one and because we are both so not ready to have a baby we were always super paranoid that it wasnât on properly or that it had air in it which often ruined the mood considerablyâŚÂ
Iâd heard about the contraceptive implant in the past when a friend of mine got one whilst she was at school so Iâd always kept it in the back of my mind for when I might need contraception. Therefore when I decided I needed another option I asked the nurse to tell me about the contraceptive implant. She told me all about it and also gave me a leaflet explaining all of my other options but after reading it I still decided that the implant sounded the best for me, so I booked my appointment with the doctor .Â
I had my implant removed last week and a new one inserted so I thought this post was due an update!Â
I canât say I had any problems with my implant over the past 3 years. I didnât have a period for almost a year and a half (which was great!), and for the past year my cycle has been about 45 days and my periods have been pretty light (which is still good!)
So, since I was pretty happy with the implant, I thought I might as well get a second one when my first expired. I donât really need contraception at the moment, but I didnât want to leave an expired implant in my arm and I thought if I was going through the process of getting it removed I might as well have a new one put in at the same time.Â
I was a bit worried about the removal process, but it was fine! The doctor made a tiny cut in my arm (itâs about 1cm in length) and pulled out the old one, and then inserted the new one with the insertion device. The nurse was chatting to me the whole time and I barely felt anything! I actually think it was less painful than the first insertion, but I donât know if that was just because I knew what to expect this time? Or maybe the doctor gave me more local anaesthetic?
Only problem is that I now have a massive bruise over my new implant. It appeared pretty much straight away and there was some swelling for the first 24 hours too. Iâm assuming that this is just what happens when you get an implant removed, but I wish Iâd known, because I have Medball next week and I donât want to still have a huge bruise on my arm then!Â
Before you tell me Iâm boring for not drinking alcohol, here is a list of things I find boring:Â
Spending half of my night in the toilet with you because you need to pee literally every 5 minutes
Having to spend the other half of my night trying to make sure you donât fall over/lose your phone/die
Listening to your 20 minute conversation about how great the toilets are or something else equally thrilling
Laughing at your same joke for the fifth time, when it wasnât even funny the first time
Having to answer the same 3 questions multiple times throughout the night because youâve either a) not listened to my answer or b) canât remember youâve asked me the question
So if youâre going to tell me that Iâm the boring one, youâd better be a super interesting drunk or at least not fall below the level of interesting you can achieve whilst sober.Â

I felt so guilty when I broke up with my boyfriend. I felt like an awful person. He was so upset, so hurt, and all because of me. I was the worst person in the world.Â
But now that some time has passed, I have realised that I have done nothing wrong. I should not feel guilty.Â
Itâs completely understandable that he is upset. Nobody wants to be dumped. I understand that. And I feel bad for being the person that upset him, but I should not feel guilty.Â
I could have done a lot worse. I could have cheated on him. I could have blamed him for everything that was wrong in the relationship. I could have lied to him for months just to make things easier for myself. But I didnât.Â
Instead, I told him weâd both changed as people, I told him that none of it was his fault. I told him I still wanted to be friends. I made it 100% clear that the relationship was over and nothing was going to change that. I want him to move on. I want him to find someone who can fulfil his needs and make him happy. He deserves that.
I understand why he doesnât feel like he can be friends with me yet. Thatâs fine. Iâll be here when/if he changes his mind. But I will not feel guilty in the meantime.
Whenever thereâs a break up in a film or on TV, or even in books, the focus is always on how awful the dumpee feels. You never see how the dumper feels. Theyâre generally just an awful person, right?Â
I broke up with my boyfriend last week. I finally decided that I couldnât continue in the relationship. For the past few months I have hated myself for not loving him the way he wanted me to and it had started to affect both my mental and physical health. Last week he was trying to make plans for my birthday and wanted to know what to get me for Christmas and I couldnât go on pretending everything was fine anymore.Â
Things have been bad since he returned from working abroad. At first, I thought it was just because we were together 24/7 and Iâd idolised him whilst he was away and forgotten all the annoying things he does. I almost broke up with him then, in June, but when I saw how upset he was, I realised I still cared for him and I didnât want to just give up when Iâd waited 10 months for him to come back home. Weâd also had a lot of good times together and I wanted things to go back to when things were good.Â
We rented a flat together in September and things were okay at first. Things werenât amazing like they used to be, but they werenât bad. But even at the beginning I was worried about the fact that he only had to spend 2 days in university and had no other friends in the city apart from me. I tried to encourage him to go to social events, apply for jobs, and try out new societies or hobbies but he went to one social event and applied for a couple of jobs and that was it.
This meant that there was a lot of pressure on me to be the main source of his happiness. But I have placement every single day, I have other friends and Iâm part of a few societies. I didnât want to feel obliged to entertain him as soon as I got home. I didnât want to feel like I constantly needed to let him stroke my face, pat me on the knee, or hold my hand in order to stop his feelings from being hurt. I didnât want to feel guilty for not having sex with him, even though he did nothing to try and look attractive and sex was always about him and what he wanted.Â
I was making him unhappy by not being able to fulfil his needs, and he was making me unhappy. It has been 6 months since he came back to the UK, and instead of things getting better, they were getting worse. So last Wednesday, I texted him on my way home asking if we could talk, so that I wouldnât chicken out, and then after sitting in an awkward silence for what seemed like hours I finally managed to tell him I didnât want to be with him anymore.Â
At first he got angry and he threw the birthday present heâd got me across the room. Then he got upset and cried a lot and I felt awful. Then he finally seemed to accept things and told me he thought it was for the best and that he wanted to be friends. He decided to go home to his parents that night which was understandable and told me heâd be back this week for his lectures.Â
I was so upset for the first couple of days. I hated myself for hurting him and kept replaying the things heâd said to me when heâd been upset. My mum came to visit at the weekend and I talked things through with her and I convinced myself that everything would be fine. Heâd be upset at first but then weâd be friends and weâd be able to sort something out and everything would be okay.Â
But last night he came back to the flat. He stormed into the room, cried for a bit, and then told me he wanted to talk. I thought he might have questions so I was ready to reassure him that none of it was his fault, that weâd just changed as people, and I still wanted to be friends etc. Instead, he told me he hated me and then asked me where I was going to move to. For the next half an hour or so, he fluctuated between saying mean things to me, telling me how upset he was so that I would feel guilty, and demanding to know what Iâd been up to at the weekend. I was so confused and so upset. I didnât know what he wanted me to say, and the more I cried, the happier he seemed to get.Â
I understand that heâs upset and angry, but I have feelings too. I might be the one who ended things, but that doesnât make him perfect and without any blame. I ended up walking out of the flat last night and cried on the phone to my mum for an hour whilst sat in the hallway.Â
I guess I was too optimistic when I was hoping that we would mutually decide that being together wasnât good for either of us and continue being friends who could live together.Â
I donât even know if I want to be friends anymore and I definitely want to move out as soon as possible. I just donât want to be pushed out before I have somewhere else to go. I have just as much right to be here as he does.Â
More complaining about my boyfriend... but I donât really have anyone else I can talk to about it.Â
As Iâve mentioned before, my boyfriend put on a lot of weight during the year we spent apart. This has meant that I have been feeling less attracted to him.Â
A couple of weeks ago he went to the doctor about being tired all the time and had a load of blood tests done. I was pretty sure that a good doctor would talk to him about his weight even if the blood tests came back normal. I was fed up of always telling him that what he was eating was unhealthy and that maybe he should exercise more. I just felt like I was nagging all the time and had basically given up trying because all he did was come up with excuses.Â
He got his blood tests back yesterday and as well as being vitamin D deficient he also had high cholesterol and abnormal liver tests. The doctor calculated his BMI and he was almost in the obese range and he might also have high blood pressure. When he told me his results, he said: â I need to lose weight, basicallyâ. I thought this meant that he had finally realised that something needed to change.Â
When I got home, as it was my turn to cook, I asked him what he wanted with his burger (homemade by me, so not full of fat and salt), expecting him to say salad or peas or something... he wanted potato wedges. At first I was jokingly like âI thought you were going on a dietâ to try and make him realise that potato wedges are not a healthy choice. But he didnât get it. I literally had to say to him âLook, youâve got high cholesterol and youâre only 22, youâve possibly also got high blood pressure and youâve just told me youâre almost obese. These are all risk factors for having a heart attack in the future. If you go on like you are right now, youâll be having a heart attack by the age of 45âł. He finally agreed to have peas and salad with his burger...
Iâm 100% sure that even if he loses loads of weight, I will still want to break up with him, but I still feel like I care more about his physical health than he does and he is just too lazy to do anything about it. Weâve become very different people and I spend more time annoyed with him than I am happy. I used to think that maybe if he lost weight Iâd be attracted to him again and everything would be fine, but I cannot stay with someone as lazy as him. The most important thing to him is his playstation and I just donât want him in my future. I was originally going to wait until June to break up with him, but I donât think I can wait that long.Â
Maybe my next update, which no one will read, will be about our break up...
I last wrote about my boyfriend here and basically things havenât got any better. I donât want to be with him anymore but I canât break up with him. Itâs made me into a right mess.Â
I love him and I donât want to hurt him, but I am not physically attracted to him at all. I can chat to him and have a fun time when Iâm with him, as long as heâs not trying to touch me. I can just about cope with him holding my hand, but when he tries to hug me or kiss me or when he wants to have sex with me I literally recoil from him. Obviously this isnât great. He gets upset and cries and I feel like an awful person. I managed to go 5 weeks without having sex with him, but last night I gave in. I was feeling sexually frustrated and really wanted sex so figured it wouldnât be too bad, plus I thought it would keep him happy for at least a week. It wasnât great. I spent most of the time with my eyes closed imagining he didnât have a massive belly or a double chin and got frustrated by how long he was taking. All morning I have just felt sick.Â
Iâve been hoping things would get better and my old attraction to him would come back, but it hasnât so far. He hasnât exactly helped though. I come back from placement and heâs always sat in exactly the same place on the sofa playing video games. He has only 2 days at university per week which he finds super exhausting and then spends the rest of his days âreadingâ and playing video games. Heâs also meant to be going swimming 2-3 times a week and eating healthily, but he goes swimming maybe 1-2 times a week, does no other exercise and is still eating a pack of biscuits and a big bag of crisps per week, plus dessert every evening. He spends nearly ÂŁ50 on food every week and I spend around ÂŁ20 on average. I feel like I make an effort to look nice each day and he just doesnât do anything. Yet he still expects me to have sex with him and cries when I say no.
In an ideal world, Iâd break up with him and weâd continue being friends. But I know that if I bring up what Iâve been feeling heâll cry and get upset and want to move out. We definitely would not stay friends. Weâre currently living together and I can barely afford my half of the rent as it is. If he does move out or wants me to move out then I wonât be able to afford it. But if we do somehow manage to continue living together in a one bedroom apartment it would be super awkward and weâd spend all our time trying to avoid each other.
Iâve therefore told myself that I need to keep things going until June at least. I graduate in July and should have a job in August so things wouldnât be so bad then. In the meantime Iâm trying to be a nice person all the time and not upset him, but itâs really really hard. I feel like an awful person all the time. I fantasise about being single and seeing other people, yet Iâm pretending that everythingâs fine just so I donât end up homeless.Â
Iâm just not sure how long I can go on like this. Iâm pretty sure itâs messing with my mental health but I donât know what else I can do.Â
I donât know if Iâm still in love with my boyfriend. I know I love him and I donât want to hurt him, but I donât think Iâm attracted to him like I used to be.Â
Last year, he was working in another country, so we were in a long distance relationship for about 10 months. We then met up with each other in Asia to go travelling for about a month. During our travelling, I gradually got more and more annoyed with him. I hated how messy he was, how long he took in the bathroom, how sweaty he got, how judgmental he could be. Heâd also put on a fair bit of weight during the time weâd been away. He wasnât skinny when we met, but I would never have said he was unhealthy. But now heâs officially in the overweight BMI category and Iâm concerned about his health.
About 3 weeks into travelling, weâd had sex only a couple of times and I was being a horrible person, always snapping at him and being extra sarcastic. I knew it, but I couldnât stop myself. I think the main reason I was being like that was because Iâd idolised him whilst he was away. Being with him 24/7 was making me notice all the non-great things Iâd forgotten about, and the bad habits heâd gained. I was therefore focusing on all the negative things about him and found it difficult to remember why I loved him. I felt uncomfortable every time he talked about the future or tried to touch me, even if he was just wanting to hold my hand. It was bad. He wanted to jump straight into how things had been before heâd gone away, but I think I needed longer to adjust. I was therefore getting frustrated with him for always wanting to touch me or kiss me. They were just normal things that a normal boyfriend would do, but Iâd managed without him for so long that I just felt like he was suffocating me and I needed to keep him at arms length. Maybe I resented him for leaving, or maybe I have intimacy issues. I just know I didnât like it and I was taking this out on him.Â
I ended up spending about 4 or 5 days thinking about how much better everything would be without him. I knew I wasnât acting normal during this time and even though I tried to act normal, I couldnât. But then, I was laying in bed one night and I honestly thought about what it would be like to break up with him, and I cried silently as he slept next to me. Iâm crying now as I write this. How would I ever find someone who loved me as much as he loved me. And what would happen next year. Weâre meant to be moving in together next year. I didnât know what to do. However, I did know that the idea of breaking up with him made me cry. A lot. So I decided to try making an effort, to try and make things be like they were before he went away.Â
I tried to make conversation, ask him questions, comment on what we were seeing and doing. Sometimes I would feel like I was making all the effort, or heâd do something that would annoy me, and Iâd snap at him again. Other times, I felt like we were back to normal, chatting and joking and having fun.Â
It obviously wasnât enough though. I still wasnât being normal. On the way back to the hotel a couple of nights later, he asked me if I was looking forward to visiting the next city. In what was meant to be a jokey way, I said âhonestly Iâm just looking forward to going to sleep right nowâ. He did not take it as a joke and refused to speak to me for the rest of the way back to the hotel. I knew he was going to confront me about how weird I was being. I was hoping to avoid it. Hoping that everything would be fine and go back to normal before heâd had enough of me and say something. But I knew I couldnât keep lying to him.Â
That night, he started crying and he started to tell me how he felt heâd messed everything up by going away and how he felt like I didnât love him anymore. I stayed silent, I didnât know what to say. He then asked me if I loved him and I answered truthfully, I said âI donât knowâ. It was awful, he cried even more, and he was trying to get away from me even though we were in a tiny hotel room. My heart broke seeing him like that and I knew then that I did love him. I hated hurting him, I just didnât know how to explain how I was feeling. I told him how I wished I felt like I did before he went away but I just didnât. Once he calmed down a bit, he was amazing. He told me that if I ever wanted to break up then I should just tell him and that the time heâs spent with me is the best thing thatâs ever happened to him. He was so understanding, I hated myself. Iâd been awful to him and he was so nice to me.
I hated how much Iâd hurt him, but after our emotional chat, things started to get better. The conversation had shown me how much I cared for him and how much I loved him and everything almost went back to normal. I was happier and he was happier and we were both getting on really well. Everything was good again. This continued for the rest of the trip and also when he came to visit me at university, and when I went to visit him at his home.
I thought things were back to normal, until he came to visit me. Weâd been texting a lot whilst we were apart and heâd been telling me how often heâd been swimming so I guess I was hoping to see some progress in the weight loss department. I was a bit disappointed. Heâd told me whilst we were travelling that he was going to try and lose weight when he got back to England. If anything, I thought he looked bigger and whilst he was visiting me he made absolutely no effort to eat healthily. He was eating chips and sweets and crisps all the time and it was a real turn off.Â
Because of this (and also getting my period midweek which just made me bloated and nauseous the whole week) we didnât have sex at all. I was never in the mood, and none of his efforts were doing anything to help with that. I didnât mind about this. I sometimes go through periods of time where I have absolutely no sexual feelings at all and I just figured it was one of those weeks. No big deal. I love him, he loves me, and sex isnât that important, right?Â
Apparently not. After the fourth of fifth day of me saying I didnât want to, he starts crying again. Iâm a bit confused. Why is he upset? What have I done now? I thought about how Iâd been acting the past week and I didnât think Iâd been overly sarcastic or anything. Iâd actually been really nice. Bit quiet and grumpy when my stomach cramps were annoying me, but that was it. I thought weâd been having fun.Â
But, me not wanting to have sex with him apparently means I donât love him. He brings up the night when I told him I didnât know if I loved him. He knows how upset I get about it so then I got upset too. I feel really sorry for him and try to reassure him that I do love him. I donât know whether he then said anything in particular, or whether I just started thinking more into it. But I got angry. Is it just the lack of sex that upsets him? Iâve spent most of the week feeling ill and not eating a lot, yet have still made the effort to go out and do fun activities with him (boat rides, beach walks, paddleboarding) but heâs upset because I didnât want to have sex with him? Did nothing else matter?
Then I started thinking about how when Iâm upset heâs always convinced itâs him Iâm upset with. Like he must be the reason Iâm crying. Iâm not great at talking about my feelings. But as soon as Iâve reassured him itâs not him thatâs upset me, he doesnât seem to care. As long as I still love him then everythingâs fine. Why, is it that when Iâm upset about something, I have to be the one reassuring him.Â
Heâs also told me before how Iâm his bestfriend and how he doesnât need any friends because heâs got me. Which seems sweet on the surface, but IÂ donât think I want someone to rely solely on me for happiness. I donât want to have to pretend that Iâm happy all the time just so that my boyfriend doesnât feel insecure.Â
Next year, Iâm going to be very busy with university most of the time and will want to spend some time with my friends. Heâs going to be starting a masters degree with very few contact hours, in a city where the few friends he did have, have all graduated. Iâm worried heâs going to expect me to spend pretty much all of my free time with him. Iâm worried that Iâm going to feel suffocated again and resent him. I just want to have fun and enjoy being with him.Â
I know I love him, and I hate it so much when heâs upset and I care about him a lot. But, I donât know if Iâm still in love with him. I donât want to give up on the relationship because he has made me really happy in the past, I just feel like this is what happens to middle aged couples whoâve been married 20 years and had kids. Not to couples whoâve been together 3 years and are still in their 20s.Â

Last week my neighbour tried to ask me out. I was just minding my own business, cleaning my windows, when he started talking to me as he washed his van. We started talking about my flat and when I mentioned I was moving out he said "That's a shame, I was going to ask you out for a drink". I naively thought he meant he was hoping to get to know me better as a neighbour. But then he disappears into his house and comes out with his business card and says "here's an old business card of mine, for if you feel like texting me sometime". This was the first time I realised he wasn't just trying to get to know me as his neighbour... I wasn't sure what to say, so I just said thanks and put it in my pocket.Â
When I finished cleaning the window, I went inside to text my boyfriend and my bestfriend to tell them about my encounter, thinking it would be a funny story to tell. But later, I noticed a piece of paper had been pushed through my door. It was a letter from my neighbour. Instead of finding it funny, I actually felt flattered that someone had gone to all this effort just to persuade me to text them! I couldnât just ignore him!Â
However, texting random guys who try to ask you out when you have a boyfriend is not a good idea... So I sent a picture of the letter to my boyfriend and a copy of the text message I was planning to send so he knew exactly what I was going to say. He approved, so I sent the text. A text which explained I had a boyfriend.Â
So far, I'd done nothing wrong, right? My boyfriend knew everything and Iâve told the friendly neighbour that Iâm in a relationship. But that's not really the end of the story.Â
I wasnât expecting a reply, but I got one. The text said he thought I was cute and included a ;) emoji and a kiss. I really wanted to reply but I knew that would be wrong. However, the text reminded me about how exciting it is starting a new relationship. It also made me think about what a relationship with someone else might be like.Â
I didn't text back and I haven't physically done anything wrong. But surely I shouldn't be having these thoughts? Am I a bad person? Or is this just a side effect of having a boyfriend who is a 12 hour flight away?Â
Recently Iâve been revising for my second year exams and today, my latest topic was contraception so I decided to share my own personal experience with the world!Â
I havenât been sexually active for very long but after only a couple of weeks of using condoms I knew I needed to use something else. Not only are they expensive but it was a pain having to stop in the heat of the moment to apply one and because we are both so not ready to have a baby we were always super paranoid that it wasnât on properly or that it had air in it which often ruined the mood considerably...Â
I had my implant fitted in January and the doctor who did it was really nice and didnât make me feel uncomfortable when he was asking me questions about my periods etc. (They like you to be on your period when they insert the implant so that theyâre pretty confident youâre not pregnant). He then got me to sit on the chair and put my arm to the side whilst he injected me with local anaesthetic which didnât hurt much, just like a vaccination really, but less deep! When my arm was numb enough, the nurse started to distract me by asking questions but it still hurt more than I was expecting. However, I was easily distracted from the momentary pain when he got me to feel my arm to show me that it was definitely in there, which I found really interesting (nerdy medical student alert). Then he bandaged my arm up and sent me on my way with a little card that says I have a Nexplanon implant in my left arm. He also told me that I should use additional contraception for the next 7 days to give the implant time for it to start working.Â
For the first couple of days it was really annoying having to stick my arm out the shower so I dinât get the bandages wet and I could also feel a bit of pain in my arm every time I moved it. However once the bandages were gone, the pain and the tiny bruise had disappeared within a week and after my 7 days were up, I had no more need for condoms! Woo!Â
*Let me just point out here that I am only having sex with my boyfriend and neither of us had had sex before, so STIs are not a big risk for me. However, if for some reason I was no longer with my boyfriend and I decided to have sex with someone else, I would definitely be using a condom alongside the implant, at least until I was sure they were free of STIs!*
So, after the first week of irritation and a bit of pain I thought the implant was wonderful but then I started to experience the âirregular bleedingâ Iâd been warned about. For two whole weeks I had a weird super light period, less than 28 days after my last normal period. Also during this time I was super hormonal, feeling down every other day and crying at the smallest of things. I seriously considered getting the implant removed but I decided to persevere with it to see if these symptoms stopped.Â
Between the weird light period and the end of March I didnât have anything resembling a period but I did have spotting some days. This was slightly annoying and meant I had to invest in some pantyliners but my mood had gone back to normal and I quickly learnt to deal with this so I no longer wanted to get rid of the implant. Despite the spotting I really couldnât imagine using any other contraception because condoms werenât effective enough for me, pills I would definitely forget to take, injections would mean frequent trips to the GP, and coils sound slightly scary and require a doctor to insert it into your uterus.Â
Right now I am loving the fact I have the implant. I donât get spotting or periods anymore, sex feels great and more natural, I feel safe in the knowledge that only 1 in 1000 women get pregnant using it over 3 years, and I donât even have to think about it until Iâm 23!Â
I know this is just one personâs experience and the implant will affect all women differently, but I wanted to share this with everyone to help girls out there realise that there are more options out there other than the pill and the condom. The implant is probably the best thing for me, but there are so many options out there, you just need to find the right one for you!Â
My housemate is getting on my nerves again. Heâs seriously so selfish and seems to think the world revolves around him.Â
My boyfriend and I had gone out for a meal in town and got back to our house at about 8:20pm. When my boyfriend tried his keys in the door he couldnât open it because it was locked on the inside. My other housemate does this because it makes him feel safer, even though itâs a yale lock so only someone with a key can actually get into the house. But heâs been doing it since we moved in so Iâve got used to it. Plus arguing with him about it doesnât get anywhere. However, we rang the doorbell twice and rapped on the letterbox but he wasnât opening the door. Only when I texted him did he finally open the door 10 minutes later. Now, it was slightly annoying having to stand outside my own house for 10 minutes without being able to get in, even when we had two pairs of keys between us, but I wasnât going to make a fuss. It really isnât worth arguing with him. So I just went upstairs to carry on with the uni work Iâd been doing.Â
About 9:30pm he comes into my room saying âIâve got your sockâ and I looked at it, and it wasnât mine, so I said âItâs not my sockâ and he was like âReally, you sureâ and I was like âIt has a scooter on it, my socks donât have scooters on them, I think itâs [my boyfriendâs]â. Instead of just accepting this he got into a big rant saying âIt is your sock, itâs a pink scooter, and itâs all girly, it must be your sock, itâs a girls sock, youâre the only girl in this house so it must be yoursâ. It was just so pathetic and stupid, there was no way it was my sock and I know what my own socks look like so once Iâd said it wasnât mine that should have been the end of the conversation, surely. This wasnât what annoyed me, I was just a bit surprised he was being so weird about a sock! xDÂ
But he then went onto say âWhat were you standing outside the house for earlier?â and I was like âWaiting to get in?â. So he said why didnât you ring the doorbell? so I said âI did ring the doorbell, twice, and knocked on the letterboxâ so he said âNo, you didnât, I couldnât hear itâ so I replied âYes, I didâ. He replied with âNo, you didnât I would have heard it, itâs loudâ so I said (getting angry now) âJust because you couldnât hear it doesnât mean I didnât ring itâ. He then went on to say that I should have called his phone if I wanted him to let me in. So I told him that I should be able to get into my own house when I have keys and shouldnât have to rely on him to open the door. So then he said something like âMaybe you shouldnât have gone out for dinner so late, or so earlyâ which made no sense at all. I then ignored the rest of the crap he said because I was shaking and angry and if I carried on the argument Iâ have ended up getting mad and either burst out crying or hit something. Luckily he left when he realised I wasnât going to talk to him any more.
Heâs so selfish! And doesnât seem to realise that not everyone wants to follow his every rule and put up with his rubbish. I am so glad I donât have to live with him next year. I seriously donât think Iâd be able to cope with another year of his unpredictable moods, and the random rants and arguments he starts about petty things.Â
I am a female and I have therefore felt that I must be a feminist by default. I assumed that feminsim was equivalent to equality. I believe that men and women should have equal rights, just like I believe all ethnicities and all sexualities should have equal rights. I therefore assumed that I should call myself a feminist.
However, I watched Reggie Yates Extreme UK: Men at War, which was about men of varying ages who speak about being against feminism. At first I was completely like âWoah, how can these guys be allowed to say stuff like thisâ but when I actually listened to their points of view I started to understand why a lot of these men feel the way they do.Â
Yes, I do think that women can be treated poorly compared to men in some ways but men are also treated poorly compared to women in other ways. I understand why feminists fight for certain things but I donât believe females are still victimised and oppressed.Â
I think it is absolutely horrible that male rape victims and male domestic violence victims are not given the same amount of support as female victims and are instead laughed at or told to âman upâ. It also annoys me that men are expected to pay for dates and hold doors open and spend lots of money on their girlfriends to be chivalrous, but are also told that they arenât treating women as their equals if they do these things. I would love it if we had a society where females can be free to express themselves how they want and males can express themselves how they want. i.e. boys arenât expected to be extremely macho, but being macho is completely acceptable, and girls arenât expected to be extremely girlie, but being girlie is completely acceptable too. However, this inât what feminism advocates.
After watching the programme I wanted to find out out more about the things Iâd seen. I read an article on the Futurist called âThe Misandry Bubbleâ which made a lot of sense to me and made me see why some men may be frustrated with feminism. At the beginning, I felt like, as a female, I should feel outraged by what he was saying, but I wasnât. It made too much sense. Yes, there were views I disagreed with, but when someone expresses all of their opinions about a certain topic, it is unlikely you will agree with everything they say.Â
I also watched some of Josh OâBrienâs videos, and again I may disagree with some of the things he says, but he does make a lot of sense. He is a good public speaker and uses logic when giving his points of view. Never did he come across as a misogynist or woman-hater and I feel like he raised some very valid points about societyâs view of men.Â
One other person shown in the show was Roosh V, who I have found impossible to agree with. He is not just against feminism but is also homophobic, transphobic and a woman-hater. Basically, in his world, you should either be a straight man, or a woman who exists solely for straight men to have sex with them. He has also caused a lot of controversy with some of his articles, particularly one called âHow To Stop Rapeâ which called for legalisation of rape on private property. He tells Reggie Yates it was a satirical piece, but to the majority of people, it does not come across that way.Â
I believe that men such as Josh expressed their views against feminism and support mens rights groups due to genuine concerns about how society now views men. Roosh, however, seems to be more concerned about how feminism is going to affect his sex life. Women are no longer going to try as hard to look pretty for him, be submissive to him, and give him sex whenever he wants it, because women now have a choice about whether to do these things. How terrible...Â
I must also point out that I tweeted Josh OâBrien asking about his thoughts on Roosh V and he said âI made clear to Reggie in unaired segments, heâs not part of the menâs movement. Heâs irrelevant to me, and I donât like him. Roosh V is not a menâs advocate, he is some idiot who doesnât represent men or seek anything for men as a whole.â I have to say I was very glad to hear this.
So far, all of the people I have talked about are men. However, there are also a lot of women who do not support feminism either. For example, an interesting site I found on tumblr was womenagainstfeminism, where women express why they donât need feminism. Again, I agreed with a lot of the views on the website. They made sense and often represented my own views. Of course, there were still opinions expressed on the site which I disagreed with, but as I said before, we are all different and have different views about things so thatâs not a  surprise. I also watched a few videos from Girl Writes What and Lauren Southern who speak out about the problems of modern feminism in a logical way without personally attacking people who identify as feminists.Â
After reading articles and watching videos, I can now confidently say that I no longer identify as a feminist. Equality is what I believe in, but this is not what feminism represents.Â
Saturday was meant to be a really good day, Christmas day for me and my boyfriend since we wonât be together on the actual day. We had a good morning but then my other housemate messed things up. Just before we were about to go to the German Christmas market he decided to tell us that he wonât be living with us next year.Â
Now, out of context, that doesnât seem like a major thing. However, heâs been messing us around with housing for weeks. At first he said he didnât want to live with just me and my boyfriend again next year, and wanted there to be a fourth person, but he didnât have a fourth person in mind so we had to be the ones to find this fourth person. My boyfriend then asked one of his friends to live with us and he agreed. My other housemate then decided that he didnât like the sound of this friend, judging him only by his name and his profile picture, which really annoyed me. He then told us about a week later that weâd be living with another 2 people, a couple of his friends. I wasnât really happy about the fact that I would be living with five guys and being the only girl, but I didnât make a fuss and told him that it was fine as long as I got to meet his friends. So a couple of days later he said I could meet his friends when they were all at gaming society, which I agreed upon. He didnât mention it again so on the day of their gaming society I texted him to ask whether it was still okay to meet them and he was just like âup to youâ so I asked if it would be better if I met them once theyâd finished their game at the society and he was like âwheneverâs fineâ so I made the effort to walk half an hour to meet them. When I got there, my housemate was being a bit of a dick and just let me stand around awkwardly for a while before I had to prompt him to introduce me to these two friends. One awkwardly waved at me before going back to his game, and the other made a half-hearted attempt to talk to me before also going back to his game. So I stood there for a while wondering why Iâd even bothered, before deciding to just leave because I was just being ignored and obviously was less important than their game. I said âByeâ but I didnât even get a reply. I didnât exactly get the greatest impression of them, but I figured they were âalrightâ and Iâd get to know them better when we were looking for houses.Â
The next day my housemate was telling me all this stuff he expected us to have in the house such as a tumble dryer, a shower separate from a bath and a dishwasher which is asking quite a lot for a student house. So, figuring we were sharing our preferences for housing, I said Iâd quite like to have a car parking spot for my car since I need it for getting to hospital placements, even if it was just road parking, I didnât mind. He then started going on about how if it was the âperfect houseâ then we couldnât be fussy about whether it had space for my car nearby. I was so mad. Why did his preferences matter any more than mine? But again, I didnât get too mad and figured it would be fine once we actually started looking at houses and he saw how unreasonable he was being.
So, a couple of days later I started looking at houses on Rightmove. There were loads of six bedroom houses on the website so I spent a good hour and a half looking through them all before getting a list of 12 possible houses together. That evening my housemate came back to tell me that one of his friends no longer wanted to live with us so we were going to be a five. Again, this annoyed me because Iâd spent so long looking at houses, but I told myself it wasnât his fault and Iâd just have to look at five bedroom houses at some point.Â
A couple of days later I started looking at five bedroom houses, there were even more to look at, but a lot of them hadnât got pictures so I only spent about an hour on these. I only got a shortlist of 3 this time. But I posted them on the Facebook group my housemate had made for us to discuss housing on.Â
Nobody replied at all. Obviously I wasnât expecting my boyfriend or my housemate to because Iâd talked to them face-to-face about the houses, but the other 2 said nothing. So I left it, we didnât have much time to see any houses before the Christmas holidays so I figured Iâd give them time to figure out what they wanted in houses. Despite deciding this, my housemate was telling me I should book viewings, and I told him I wasnât going to do that unless I knew whether the others actually liked the houses.Â
Then, today, he decides to call a âhouse meetingâ just before me and my boyfriend were about to go out to tell us he wasnât living with us and gave us all these random reasons that I wasnât really listening to. I was kind of mad, but I was refusing to let him ruin my mood. So I was just glad to leave the house. My boyfriend was mad too and I let him rant for a bit but I was determined not to let it get to me and just enjoy the afternoon. I did need to do something to make myself feel better, but figured sending a nasty text would just cause an argument, so the simplest thing I could do was just leave the housing Facebook group. I had no reason to be in it anymore since we wouldnât all be searching for houses together anymore, and it would just remind me of all the wasted effort Iâd put into looking for houses, plus it would be a way of showing my anger without causing an argument (or so I thought). Couple of minutes later I got a message from my housemate which just said âChildishâ, I wanted to reply so badly, but I knew it would just turn into an argument. I managed to pretty much forget about the whole housing thing for the rest of the afternoon and I managed to have a really good time.Â
When I got back to the house I told myself to be civil and polite with my housemate and everything was going fine until he came into my room whilst I was packing for going home, saying âSo have you told [your boyfriend] to stop being childishâ and I was really confused so I was like âI have no idea what youâre going on aboutâ so he started going on about us leaving the facebook group â3 minutesâ after heâd told us. I was just like âI really donât see why itâs such a big deal, thereâs no point in us being in the group anymore anyway!â so he was like âOh so it was your ideaâ and I was like âYes... I did leave first...â Then he mumbled on for a few minutes before asking me what I thought about him not living with us because I âwas like a stone wall earlierâ. So I started by saying that I understood why he didnât want to live with us and I could hardly complain about that because itâs up to him who he lives with, HOWEVER, it would have been nice if heâd told us a while ago before Iâd wasted my time looking at houses etc. So he started going on about how he couldnât have done that because he didnât know if the other people were going to let him live with them, and had to wait until they said yes before telling us so he wasnât left without a house. Which I understood, but there was no regards for our feelings, no apology for messing us around, nope, he was the only one that was important, heâs just so selfish. This annoyed , but I wasnât too mad at him yet. But he then started to say about how âit was like he lived by himself anywayâ since we apparently barely ever talk to him. This really annoyed me because he was now making this personal. The last straw was when he said his friend wasnât sure about living with us either and I replied with âWe barely talked to each otherâ and then said âYeah, that was part of the problemâ as if it was all my fault! Iâd made an effort to go meet them and talk to them, and all theyâd done was carry on their stupid video game. I got so mad and knew that if I said anything else Iâd either start a big argument or cry or something. So I angrily carried on with my packing, ignoring him until he left.
When he left I was so angry, and when my boyfriend came in to see if I was okay, I ended up crying. I should have been really happy that evening after having a really good day but instead I was angry and confused and upset!Â
I feel a lot better about it now. Iâm at home, Iâve ranted about him to my mum, and here on tumblr and my boyfriendâs friend still wants to live with us so we can start looking for 3 bed houses in January and I wonât be homeless! To be honest Iâm glad I donât have to live with my housemate for another year and itâs actually a relief he doesnât want to live with us since heâs not exactly a nice person to live with.Â

As the title subtly suggests⌠I lost my virginity recently. Yes, at the grand old age of 19. I know many people will have lost their virginity a lot earlier than this (which is perfectly fine) and there'll be people out there who are older than me who haven't lost their virginity yet (and that's fine too). There'll be people out there who don't want to have sex at all (and that is also fine!) Personally, I'm glad I waited until now. I had a great experience and do not regret it at all!
I lost my virginity to the boyfriend I talked about in this post and I'm so glad it was with him and I hadn't just decided to have sex with whoever asked me first. We'd been together just over 7 months and had been talking about sex for a while, but we waited until we were both completely ready.
I know lots of people say that their first time was awkward and painful and not that great. I'm not going to lie, my first time was slightly awkward⌠letâs just say condoms are a nightmare when your only experience of them is a video you saw in Religious Education which was of a middle-aged lady applying one to a banana⌠And at first, it was a bit uncomfortable, bordering on painful. But overall it was great, amazing even! I felt completely comfortable telling him if something hurt and he kept checking I was okay and was really patient with me. It was only uncomfortable at first, and then after a few minutes, it just felt really reeeeally good and I just couldn't keep quietâŚ
When we were finished, I just couldn't stop grinning and I totally understood what the big fuss is about sex!
So, for anyone out there who is thinking about having sex for the first time, here are my tips for a good  experience:
Make sure you have contraception prepared well in advance. Whether this is a condoms, the pill, the implant, the coil or whatever else is out there. If you're too embarrassed to sort this out, then youâre probably not ready. My boyfriend and I went and bought condoms together which I liked because it showed that we were both concerned about safety. Also be aware that nothing is 100% safe!Â
Don't plan way in advance the exact date and time that you're going to do it. This could stress you out and build up too much apprehension and also make you feel pressured into doing it on that night, even if you're not ready. What happened for me was that my boyfriend asked me if I'd like to have sex the next day and I replied with something along the lines of "Yeah, Iâd like to, and if we both want to tomorrow, then yeah, we can". This gave me long enough to get prepared and build up some excitement, but not long enough for me to get too nervous.Â
Make sure youâre in a location where there are no time pressures, nobody can hear you or walk in on you, and you're comfortable. For example, in you or your partner's room, with the door locked and with nobody else in the house, or due back in the house for at least another hour or two.
Make sure you feel really comfortable with your partner. I'm not saying you have to be in love  with them but I'm pretty sure that if I'd had sex with someone just because they were there it wouldn't have been anywhere near as good an experience as it was. Also, if youâre comfortable with them, it will make it easier for you to speak out if something hurts, or you'd like to try something different. Plus you're a lot less likely to feel self-conscious and will be free to just be yourself and enjoy it.Â
Make sure you actually want sex. Do not have sex just because all your friends are doing it, or because your partner has pressured you into it or just because you feel like you should. You won't enjoy it if you don't actually want it.Â
Make sure the other person also wants sex. Do not assume that your partner wants sex because they're male or because they're not a virgin, or because they're the one who first mentioned it. Consent is extremely important on both sides. Just because you've decided you want to lose your virginity does not mean that someone has to have sex with you!
Communicate at all times. If you want to stop at any time, then tell your partner straight away. You don't have to give a reason, just tell them to stop. Maybe you just want to pause for a second, or just slow down but let them know.Â
Don't expect an orgasm. Sex can feel really great even if you don't orgasm and expecting one during your first time will only make you disappointed if it doesn't happen. Enjoy the experience and if you orgasm, it's just a bonus! Definitely do not fake it.Â
Make sure to tell your partner that you had a good time. I'm not saying that you should lie, but if you enjoyed it, then let them know! People can get very insecure about sex so let them know you had fun and it'll get you both more excited for next time.
Disclaimer: I'm definitely no expert in sex or first times, but these are just things I thought about from my own experience.
So I Spit in this Tube... and I can Save Someoneâs Life?
At the beginning of term, I went to an event run by the medical society which told us about each of the charity groups they support and how we could get involved with them. I was there myself to promote a charity that I am involved with, but I also had the chance to listen to what the other charities had to say.
One I was particularly interested in was Anthony Nolan, a charity who run a bone marrow donor register to help save the lives of people with blood cancer.
Up until the beginning of this year I thought that to donate your stem cells they had to literally suck the marrow out of your bones and I didn't really understand what the benefit was of giving someone my bone marrow. What were they going to do with some spongy bone bits?
However, I am more educated now. I now know that to get to your bone marrow stem cells, you usually just take some drugs over a few days which make your bones release more stem cells into your blood. And then it's pretty simple, they take some blood from you over a few hours and they have the stem cells! Only 10% of the time do they actually have to stick a needle into your bone, and if they do, you're under general anaesthetic anyway! Oh, and I also learned in my haematology lectures that bone marrow is where all the different cells found in your blood develop, which explains why they're useful for people with blood cancer!
So, after being educated, I decided that I wanted to join the register, because if I'm a match to someone out there, and can save their life, no one is going to know if there's no record of it! Therefore, at my universityâs next donation event, I went along and asked about signing up.
First, they gave me a form to fill in with the usual stuff such as name, date of birth, address etc. and then a few other questions about your height and weight and health conditions, just so they can make sure you're healthy enough to donate and don't have any problems yourself. Then, once the form was all filled in I was handed a plastic tube and told to spit into it up to the line. Now, this might seem simple, but you're not meant to smoke, chew gum, eat, or even drink for half an hour before you give a sample, so it's not that easy. I was stood there for at least 10 minutes trying to summon up enough saliva to fill up this tube which literally only needed about 2mm! But hey, it's worth it if I can save a life! That's all it took, a form and a spit sample, and now I'm on the register.
I've just got to wait between now and the age of 60 to see if I match someone in the world who needs a bone marrow transplant!
If you would also like to put your name on the Anthony Nolan register then please follow this link here to find out more and to sign up: www.anthonynolan.org/
