exactly. and if you put this in a universe where sam was at least somewhat aware of johndean as a child (because frankly it would have been hard to hide) and saw dean during/after he was raped, young and hurt, i feel like it would make the entire thing a lot more scary and real for him. dreaming about those very real memories but now he is his father and his son is in dean’s place. shifting between one and the other. and it’s not even completely irrational of him (not like when a straight person with OCD gets intrusive thoughts about getting involved with someone of the same gender, or when a parent with OCD worries about hurting a child they only want to protect) because as much as sam loves his son he is actively projecting dean’s memory onto dean jr. and he knows it. and he picked the name for a reason and he chose to have a child for a reason and dean is the reason for nearly everything he does now.
and he might not want dean jr but he doesn’t not want him either, right? he will never do anything to him because he loves him and he refuses to be like john, but the desire is not non-existent. something is there.
Supernatural asks the poignant question of would it just have been better if daddy had badtouched you and brainwashed you with all the talk of demons than demons actually existing and the answer, genuinely is that there’s no difference

I've been thinking about the horror of being John Winchester.
John and Mary fell in love because of cupid. Heavenly interference forced them together. They couldn't stand each other before. Imagine being suddenly overcome with love for someone you didn't even like a minute ago. Imagine how confusing it would feel.
They weren't the perfectly happy idealised couple we were led to believe in early seasons. When Dean is in Heaven reliving his memories in s4, he comforts Mary because John had left - albeit temporarily. Things got so bad that they could separate despite cupids programming.
There was a celestial magnet placed inside of John and Mary that forced them together, just so they could produce the vessels for Michael and Lucifer.
When Mary died, John went mad with grief. He obsessed over seeking vengeance for her until the day he died. Cupid programmed John to love Mary above all others, and that programming wasn't undone when she died.
Were there ever moments when John was afraid of his own heart? Did he ever recognise he had no control over himself? Did the obsessive love ever feel like poison?
He finally broke free of the conditioning to prioritise Mary above all others in order to save Dean's life. He trusted Dean to do what he could not, but the fact he relinquished control for long enough to sacrifice himself for Dean must have been a monumental effort that he doesn't get enough credit for.
John and Mary aren't a love story with a tragic ending. They're a horror story, start to finish.

will i get killed if i say i don’t actually believe john winchester did his best with his sons. i do think he loved them and he probably did what he thought was his best but it really wasn’t. there were many ways he could have easily done a lot better

another interesting thing about devil's trap is how much creepier the demon's interactions with dean are compared to his interactions with sam when you'd probably expect the opposite given the personal connection. not just the dialogue and acting but the directorial choices having him loom over dean contrasted with the significantly less suggestive angles manners uses with sam.
like there is no scenario where azazel rapes sam in that cabin but the whole setup has dean about to be raped and tortured and murdered in a way that is supposed to MOTIVATE SAM. sam's role is to be forced to watch it happen unless he taps into his rage and uses his powers to stop it. dean is fair game because he's just in the way as sam's weak spot and connection to humanity.
and the same dynamic is repeated in ahbl with sam once again pinned to the wall and forced to watch dean get brutalized at the altar of his destiny.
a year later he's back against that wall helplessly watching dean get dragged to hell by hellhounds but interestingly lilith gets much more "personal" with sam than azazel did. he is, after all, her competition, not chosen champion.
