I have become known at my library as the dude who knows how to deal with computers. Iâm not in IT, and I donât know shit about hardware, but Iâm pretty good at figuring out what is causing an error, or how to perform a task in a specific program. Â
I have also joked repeatedly that all I really need to do is stand near one of the student computers in the library and itâll start working again. Iâve no idea why, but for some reason errors that happen repeatedly just go away whenever I come to look at the computer.
Last week, I helped a student who was having issues with his laptop. Multiple programs had frozen, but he hadnât saved his paper, and luckily I was able to get it working long enough for him to save three straight days of work that he otherwise wouldâve lost. Itâs worth noting that I spent most of the time I was trying to fix it whispering, âCâmon, baby, work with meâ at his computer, because⊠just because, okay. Itâs what I do, it works, donât question it.
Anyway, I was around late at work last night, waiting for my ride, when the student worker came back to my office and said there was a small group of students looking for me, and could I give them a hand even though I was off the clock?
Sure, why not.
I came out to find a group of six students, including the guy I helped last week, at a table clustered around one laptop. I rolled up, said, âHey, what can I help you with?â, and the guy said, âCan you just hang out here for a second?â
Sure, my dude. Iâm off the clock, Iâm listening to a podcast, I can chill at a table with your group until my ride shows up, if you want.
So I spend some time flipping through my phone, only half paying attention, figuring theyâre finishing something up and theyâll ask their question as soon as theyâre done. But after a minute, the guy says, âIt worked!â and there was a chorus of excitement from the rest of the group. They all thanked me, and excused themselves to go back to class.
Turns out they had a group presentation, and the laptop they were trying to present from had froze up on them. Not knowing what to do, this guy apparently told his group there was a computer wizard in the library, and that merely being in my presence might be enough to fix it. To be fair, he⊠was not wrong.
I just find it delightful that this has become such A Thing that students are now seeking me out. Not to ask a question, or get some help, but just to stand near their device and share my mythical computer-fixing aura. Itâs like being a terribly benign cryptid.
Youâre the Installation Wizardâs cousin
for the record, one of my patrons just called me âMrs. Bill Gatesâ when he needed help with the computer so

âTortillaâ would match to âtortaâ, whichâŠ.is a real Spanish word that just means cake, yâall.
Tortillas are little flat cakes.
in addition, mosca means fly
mosquito does mean little fly
lmfao
âdumpâ is an old adjective that meant âdoughyâ so âdumplingâ is basically âlittle doughy thingâ
Yes but thatâs not funny.

But also weâre not becoming allergic to everything nowadays like certain white moms fear. Allergies have always existed. They were just talked about differently

âWell we didnât have all this fancy chronic illness stuff in the Olden Days, what did people do then??â
They died, Ashleigh.Â
This is a picture tracking bullet holes on Allied planes that encountered Nazi anti-aircraft fire in WW2.
At first, the military wanted to reinforce those areas, because obviously thatâs where the ground crews observed the most damage on returning planes. Until Hungarian-born Jewish mathematician Abraham Wald pointed out that this was the damage on the planes that made it home, and the Allies should armor the areas where there are no dots at all, because those are the places where the planes wonât survive when hit. This phenomenon is called survivorship bias, a logic error where you focus on things that survived when you should really be looking at things that didnât.
We have higher rates of mental illness now? Maybe thatâs because weâve stopped killing people for being âpossessedâ or âwitches.â Higher rate of allergies? Anaphylaxis kills, and does so really fast if you donât know whatâs happening. Higher claims of rape? Maybe victims are less afraid of coming forward. These problems were all happening before, but now weâve reinforced the medical and social structures needed to help these people survive. And we still have a long way to go.
This is one of my favorite anecdotes to show how clever rewording of statistics can make them say the opposite of what they mean:
Every time a state makes riding a motorcycle without a helmet illegal, the number of ER patients seriously injured in motorcycle accidents skyrockets. Every single time.
When you phrase it just right, it makes it sound like itâs more dangerous to ride a motorcycle with a helmet than without one. Of course, the reality is that before those laws, those patients were going to the morgue, not the ER.
