Ao3 is the most user friendly and intuitive site ever if you’re old enough to remember how the internet always worked before algorithms came along and ruined almost everything else. It’s there for you to find fics you want to read, it’s not there to shove things in your face, do your thinking for you and ultimately sell you something.

Remember when joining fandom as a younger person meant lurking for a bit and figuring out the vibe and etiquette instead of coming in on day one and calling people weirdos for liking weirdo shit in the weirdo factory.

Yes! But I will say I’m actually old enough that when I was entering fandom spaces, I really was entering the weirdo factory. By which I mean, it wasn’t just clicking on a hashtag and seeing what was there. It wasn’t stumbling into a fandom because content turned up on my dash. When I was a young person entering fandom space I had to seek out the chat room or message board for the fandom and join it. It was becoming part of a specific community. It felt like entering someone’s clubhouse and of course you wouldn’t call people weirdos in their own weirdo factory. AND if anyone did call us weirdos, they could just be kicked out all together. I genuinely miss that time.

making the radical claim "11 year old children should be taught how to make extremely simple food" has resulted in people making arguments like "I wasnt allowed to plug in electronics until I was 16 and I think this is super normal actually" and "children dont know what ratios are so its unfair to expect them to be able to comprehend the idea of adding equal amounts rice and water to a rice cooker" and I gotta say originally I thought maybe I was being too judgy but now I feel very secure in my opinion because what the fuck

I had to cook a meal by myself to earn a Brownie Girl Scout badge. I was 8. I made spaghetti. By 11, I was regularly babysitting my 3 year old brother and making meals for both of us. Acting like 11 is a little kid and not a whole tween middle schooler is so weird to me.

we used to get christmas episodes of television. halloween episodes. valentines. we used to get television that felt like part of your life. like it was happening alongside your life. now we mostly get 8 episodes dropping all at once every two years and they don't have time for any of that. i miss characters living alongside us

this is why it’s been so sad to see soaps slowly dying. I used to have 3 shows I would watch *every day* Monday - Friday year round, and the characters would watch fireworks on the Fourth of July and toast at midnight to ring in the new year and all the things in between. you’d see characters be born and grow up and become parents themselves. now 2 of the 3 soaps I grew up watching have been canceled so I’m down to my last 1. and honestly? it sucks sometimes. I’m aware of this. storylines become ridiculous and take too long to resolve. but those characters are like my family. I’ve literally been watching some of them since I was a child. There’s a place for fast paced story telling but there’s also a place for the comfort of familiarity and longevity.
