In case anyone is curious about what CHO (Chinese Hamster Ovary) cells are used for in drug production:

CHO cell lines have been a staple in drug development and production for YEARS. The fact that they’re mammalian cells makes them better at generating and folding stable proteins than, say, insect cells, bacteria, or fungi. The mammal/organ they originated from is basically irrelevant! The function of the cell is what matters. Cell lines are developed and manufactured entirely separately from the originator, unless you’re originating an entirely new study in an academic setting or trying to create an entirely new cell line.

They are a workhorse in the industry for recombinant protien based drugs. Do you know what that includes? Scary scary drugs like FUCKING INSULIN. Some recombinant protein treatments for ANEMIA AND HEMOPHELIA have been on the market for YEARS.
