Max seems to be more in love with the idea of Lucy than the reality. She represents his parents and the good people he lost in shady sands

Cooper is so bitter and sarcastic the way he says “girlfriend” feels like a cope in his part. Like now I can ignore these feelings I have about her cuz her “real” romantic interest is here

The way he smiles when telling max he talks as much as Lucy, then grimaces in guilt.

Even if Lucy and max do get back together, I see it falling apart pretty quickly due to the way Lucy has been changed by the wasteland. Lucy’s arch is a person who thought they were good realizing they might not be as good as they thought and max is a person who has been striving to be better and is finally getting there. It feels quite doomed
