Q. Does JNS really say KSE 'grins' as opposed to 'smiles'?

Anyone who managed to escape from a branch office back to HQ clammed up and refused to describe it, just shaking their head in disgust. And a subtle stigma attached to them. Analysis/thoughts on why Soleum doesnโt respond to Choi
Iโve made multiple posts about it (Choi trying and failing to get Soleum to open up + evidence of Soleumโs silence) and seen various (good) viewpoints on possible reasons why, so I thought Iโd address the potential reasons all in one go + organize my own thoughts on it,,, since I didnโt think about it much until I saw the various viewpoints.
spoilers for part 2. Warning that this is a very long post.
One of the points brought up by @maganbee and @clockworkspider (sorry if I jumpscared anyone with a tag) is that Soleum knows Choi is super smart; Soleum has too many secrets and Choi is smart and so to avoid spilling anything, Soleum chooses to not deal with him too much. I do think this is an aspect, and could lead to Soleum finding interactions with Choi exhausting (who knows if he actually thinks that way though). However, something feels off about it, and I finally realized why.
hereโs a little table of contents to summarize why itโs off, and Iโll explain the points in more depth
His constant silence makes his talking a tell, which doesnโt help at all if heโs trying to prevent Choi from knowing things.
In dangerous situations, Soleum tends to go for an active approach instead of a passive one. Silence generally is a passive approach. Additionally, actively talking can potentially let Soleum get the upper handโ and he usually is able to change the situation via talkingโwhereas silence often doesnโt even have that potential.
His interaction with Team B Leader, who is canonically basically a walking lie detector.
Point 1.
Choi aside, I think Soleum almost always talks more when heโs trying to hide something (and when he explains something but that might be a personality thing haha~). This can be counterintuitive bc its easily suspiciousโ over explaining, I meanโ but he is creative and smart enough that the explanations he gives on the fly are believable (unlike Choiโif you know himโ,who has been instantly + correctly called out for lying at least once ใ ใ granted Choi has also known when Soleum is lying, but he doesnโt call it out.), especially if you donโt know Soleum. Choi is at the disadvantage here because he hasnโt known Soleum for long + Soleum actively tries to hide himself, whereas Soleum has known and presumably analyzed DER Choi for years. But he does know that Soleum is typically very very quiet with him, so itโd obviously be suspicious every time Soleum starts talking a lot. Compared to other characters, Soleum talking to Choi has way too much of a contrast. And Choi sees Soleum talking to others (most obviously Jaekwan), so itโs also suspicious in and of itself that Soleum is only unresponsive to Choi. In my personal opinion, the suspiciousness as a result of silence is far more of a con than giving responses as normal, even at the risk of giving too much info.
Everytime Soleum says more than 3 lines thereโs a 50% chance of him lying/having a hidden agenda, and Choi is probably aware of that. The reason Choi doesnโt act on this is. Well. Itโs Choi, who doesnโt discount any possibility until heโs considered it carefully, and who prefers wait-and-see approaches when it comes to non-urgent situations. Also, Soleum lying while talking does still have more to go off of than Soleum saying nothing, which is probably what would happen if heโs called out for lying (and, like, what most people would do when theyโre called out for lying. In my opinion, aside from specific situations or close relationships, calling someone out for lying is more likely to make them defensive than more likely to make them tell the truth).
additionally, Soleum seems to be quiet around Choi even the conversation isnโt dangerous at all. In these situations, it would benefit him to respond moreโฆ? I can see his constant silence being beneficial in a โheโs silent no matter the topic so itโs never unusualโ but I genuinely canโt tell how well Choi can read Soleumโs reactions. If he can read them well, then the silence doesnโt change anything.
Point 2,
Soleum uses talking as a weapon quite often and he generally prefers a more active approach; if anything, he talks quite normally when it comes to a lot of people he should be nervous about talking to. Ho Yuwon is a very good example, since heโs a superior with a lot of power, but Soleum talks to him quite normally.
Soleum using words to get out of a situation is quite common so Iโll list out examples from the top of my head (may be misremembering some. For that same reason these are not in order.). Him getting break time in the quiz show; creating a cult part 1; convincing Nasol to not kill/sacrifice Heeoun (?); convincing Ho Yuwon to not kill him + Choi in the taxi; home shopping channel arc; cult part 2; mansion of the blind convincing his team to let him try and save others; heโs always making people work together, for ex Braun and Jaheon;
thereโs definitely more but Iโm blanking and I think these prove my point enough ใ ใ Talking is definitely a weapon that Soleum is very skilled at using, and heโs experienced at it enough that he should be able to navigate conversations with Choi easily, especially when it comes to casual conversations. Again, Soleum being so quiet is inherently suspicious/notable because his silence is extremely obvious when compared to how he talks to Jaekwan and other Bureau agents.
Point 3
B leader and Choi have a lot in common. Shrewd, observant, seemingly approachable, thinks quickly, leaves possible avenues open as much as possible, they hide their own thoughts / suspicions, etc etc etc. additionally, B leader is canonically basically a lie detector
now, Soleum isnโt that talkative, but he is more talkative to B leader than he is to Choi (to which he is maybe 1% talkative if that). Would like to note that at least part of this may be because heโs curious about a bunch of things. Includes another example of Soleum talking more when heโs trying to explain/lie/do something.
Of course, B leader is also more intimidating than Choi. He presses silences instead of filling them, as well. Even then, I think Soleum is more willing to give responses (to show heโs listening) and more willing to ask questions (again may be due to curiosity as a DER fan)
minor tangent but Soleum does listen well in serious conversations and when heโs being given advice. Heโs a โgood childโ for a reason, after all. Hmmm because of this itโs hard to tell if sometimes his silence is due to respectfulness or other reasons (like, not wanting to give more info than necessary).
additional points
@maganbee also points out that Soleum doesnโt like lying to โgood peopleโ, which is true. Itโs a very good point, and is probably an additional aspect; after all if he talks to Choi more, heโd have to lie to him more. But Soleum also doesnโt lie that much to the main cast generally (Saheon being the exception), so Iโm not sure if it means anything~. Also, I think heโs lied to Jaekwan a fair amount, who would definitely fall under โgood personโ. Youngeun, Iโm less sure of how much heโs lied to herโฆ in fact he ends up not lying to most of the Daydream agents very often, primarily because the agents donโt really pry into each othersโ lives.
I was trying to think of other characters who Soleum may be this silent toward, other than Choi. The potential other person I think he might not respond to as much is Seonghae but heโs contaminated in most of their interactions ใ ใ I distinctly remember a conversation where Seonghae was adamantly saying Soleum was โgoodโ and Soleum was fairly quiet in itโฆ likely due to not agreeing or because heโs awkward about complimented. Anyway, Seonghae and Choi are similar with portrayed upbeat energy so I considered if maybe Soleum is bad with those types; I went back to check. This is how he talks to Seonghae (and Leopard, both energetic people) in chapter 68 and 70
Vs Choi in 143 (paraphrased convo but accurate silences),,, couldโve been a Grapes persona thing but it shouldnโt be.
3. Just to address it, id like to mention that Soleum does weaponize his silence against Choi in 193. Itโs pretty funny tbh because the way he โstalls for timeโ is legit just. Saying nothing. So yes, Soleumโs silence has been to his advantage. But I think this is him using whatโs available instead of him, like, being silent this whole time just for the sake of this one time. I do believe that his constant silence with Choi has more negatives than benefits, objectively speaking. The silence is only suspicious after all, and as a spy he should be trying to blend in. And if he talked to Choi more, then it wouldโve been prime opportunity to โask for little favorsโ or get more information and things like that. Slightly risky, but not as much as silence, and any exchange comes with risks.
all Iโve done this far is disprove potential reasons, so what are actual reasons for Soleumโs silence
Well. Who knows. For being the narrator, Kim Soleum sure is hard to understand. I think the result is due to a multitude of reasons, including Soleum potentially finding it tiring to not talk to Choi, and Soleum not wanting to lie.
I think one of the definitive reasons is because Soleum thinks he can get away with being silent to Choi. An accurate belief, evidentially. The thing with silence is that itโs often risky because it can be escalating or de-escalating, and is so vague that it can be read in any matter of ways including the worst possible way. For example with B leader, itโs possible that Soleum being too silent could make B leader think Soleum is being un-cooperativeโ then causing B leader to turn hostile or consider Soleum as an enemy.
Not a good outcome, right? To be perfectly honest, this also shouldโve been a consideration for Choi, especially since we know heโs been aware of Soleumโs daydream identity from the very beginning. If Soleum was a spy with no knowledge of Choi, heโd honestly be stupid for being as silent as he is, both because of how suspicious it is and because of how easily itโs seen as a lack of cooperation. Choi could have killed Soleum or outed Soleum or imprisoned Soleum at any moment and for good reason, because Soleum is a spy.
With these considerations, why is Soleum being so silent even though itโs obviously pretty risky? I think itโs because he knows he can get away with it, because he has a decent idea of Choiโs personality from the wiki. At the very least, he knows that Choi does more of a wait-and-see, and doesnโt usually take drastic action. With other people, Soleumโs silence can get him killed. With Choi that isnโt the case, and Soleum knows that.
Iโll throw out some other possible reasons as well, without necessarily strongly believing in all of them. After all, Soleum knowing he can get away with silence doesnโt explain why he does it. Keep in mind that his silence is very likely due to a multitude of factors.
Soleum is naturally pretty quiet, I.e. his very short responses in his texts to his friends in ch 1. If heโs โnaturallyโ quiet then why isnโt he silent to everyone? Well, the situation, and you need to conversational to get by in society, and also itโs only polite to talk to people. By default this would imply that Soleum is most quiet with Choi because heโs most comfortable with Choi which is. A questionable assumption, and would be related to the fanboy Soleum idea. Or it means heโs too tired but he has the energy to talk to other characters, so.
Soleum is trying very hard to not form attachments to everyone. This is canon. The reason itโs a โpossibleโ reason is because heโs still talking to everyone except Choi
(fanboy Soleum theory) @somber-cryptid and @ghoststorygottatheorydump and @everyonesfavoritebastard have brought up that maybe Soleum is starstruck because heโs a major Choi fan. So heโs too nervous to talk to Choi. To my knowledge thereโs nothing to disprove this. Plus, Soleum talks a bit more to Choi in part 2, which could be a result of enough time passing for him to be less starstruck; itโs hard to tell due to all the contamination and Iโฆstill havenโt done a part 2 full reread, so I could be wrong.
@ghoststorygottatheorydump also says that maybe Soleum feels awkward because he wrote something in relation to Choi (donโt think he wrote Choi because he seems more of a lurker and I donโt think he wrote the Looky Mart entry because heโฆseemed pretty unhappy with it). Aka, heโs silent because of awkwardness and maybe guilt. Thereโs nothing to disprove this. As for why he felt guilty, itโs possible he wrote the disaster that gave Choi his neck scar (possible as in it hasnโt been disproven LOL)
(fanboy theory) I have a minor theory/headcanon that Soleum looked up to DER Choi and admires him. If so, itโs possible that Soleum is silent because he cares too much about Choiโs opinion. When you admire someone a lot, you donโt want to say the wrong thing because you put a lot on emphasis on their opinion, right? Itโs a bit different from being starstruck. As a side note, i do wonder if this (and being starstruck) could tie into his interactions with B leader, since B leader is from the early DER days
Contamination. Just because itโs alwaysss a possibility (esp with the story usurper page). not sure how itโd relate to Soleumโs interactions with Choi specifically tho.
Hahhh I wish I had more possible reasons that arenโt related to the fanboy theory but Iโm blanking a lot. If Soleum hates Choi or was scared of him, heโd still be able to talk to him, so itโs not those. Thereโs no other reason for him to feel awkward or uncomfortable or anxious around Choi, at least not moreso than other charactersโฆ
Haha is this what Choi feels like? Soleum is so hard to understand, props to bds-nim for creating such a mysterious narrator/protagonist
If anyone has any other ideas feel free to let me know~ also apologies if youโve made a comment or reblog about this other and I didnโt respond or address it here,, I did try clicking through all my posts I thought would be most likely to have interaction abt it

He specifically says ghost stories about parasites like horsehair worms -> the story about horsehair worms (who control their host insects and get them to drown themselves) controlling humans is really well known scary story in kr and even got made into a movie lol
Q. In kr, does he read as more emotional than in part 1 and 2?
A. in past eps I def felt that he seemed noticably upbeat. Him getting scared this part felt on par with part 1 to me though
Q. Does this mean KSE has melted?
A. This is speculation. In first sentence, KSE is worrying about the possibility that some part of his body have already melted to be 'perfect for eating'.
Q. Did the person inside the jar break the bottom of the jar?
A. I read it as implying that they did, they say 'leave it(/me) behind' right before the jar bottom breaks
--------
Thoughts
dang, even weakened, kse is kse... carrying human weight in his shoulders... Or is kse's current body also made of special material, like the good friend body was?
jin nasol!!!!
nasol and gye now both each lack one ring finger
omg... I didn't expect the old person to sacrifice themself... I mean it was already too late for them but...
First gsgw mentions exigua, now horsehair worm. Rule of 3 - another parasite will be mentioned one day. My vote goes to that one parasite that gets into snail eyes, you know the one (/j)
A. Ok to paraphrase a lil bit, it basically says : Assistant Manager Jin Nasol was sending me a look of approval for a different reason.
And the following paragraph tells us that she's like 'ok this does look useful' so she approves of kse bringing the old person but not for the reason kse first appealed to her, basically
---
Thoughts
really liked the ghost story vibes this ep.
dang, immediately after the kind older folks are introduced... liquidified...
A fun coincidence for me is today I was listening to this song on repeat
Q. it translates "๋๋ ๋ํ๋๊น์ด ๋์ด ๊ณ ๊ฐ๋ฅผ ๋๋ ธ๋ค." to "I turned head away with a dead fish's eye." is this correct?
A. Yeah kind of... It's 'I turned my head, with dead fish's eyes on my face.'
'dead fish's eyes' or to be more specific 'frozen pollock's eyes' is a phrase in kr
It means... Ig basically means dead looking eyes. Out of exasperation & such similar emotions.
see those park moondae examples
Q. I don't understand what is said here
A.
The bullies: hey, you old people (ahjeossi, ahjumma), you're still here at that age? You've screwed over your lives. / (Sarcastically) Yeah young man, come here~ we're 40-50 years old who can't even get part time jobs but we're going to act all high and mighty here~
KSE: (These guys crossed the line. If I don't do anything in retaliation, the old people who helped me will look/feel like fools)
KSE: (hesitates on what to do)
The old people: (grabs his shoulder)
The old people : Sigh/ Look at them, saying these things when we're all in similar situations. / Ignore them, ignore them / bullies like them should be thrown out
Q. Was KSE about to beat the bullies up?
A. I guess at the very least he was considering saying something back at them
--------
Thoughs
He's so happy! Can't tell if he was just that unhappy about his prev sleeping circumstances (pretty bad to be fair) or if he's just contaminated. Maybe both...
the bullies changing their stance & trying to see if there's anything they can get out of him... Lol
somehow I didn't expect to see kind people here. It's nice. I liked how KSE was like 'ok if I don't say anything back to those bullies I'd be making those who helped me feel like fools' but then the people who helped him actually didn't want him to retaliate & escalate things.
got a bunch of questions so making a separate post
ep 383
Q. Among the ghost's poems, I'm really stuck on โthe young one who ran away was struck by an arrow, like the last steps of a deer.โ since it seems weirder than all the flowers talk from before. Is it like that in KR too?
A. Ok the section says "my lover, your run is like the last steps of a deer struck by an arrow, like the delicate rain of early summer". It's commenting on KSE running away from it.
ep 384
Q. Did KSE really say 'yay'?
A. 'yay' is basically correct. He says '์ํธ'
Q. Did KSE really say 'luck meta'?
A. Yes that is the literal and correct translation. He says something like "good thing I decided to go with the luck meta early on". Yes he is using the word 'meta' in the gaming sense, as in strategy. It's not an uncommon online way of speaking.
Q. Is "Anyway, this worker getting a job is a job." correct translation?
A. I'd tl it as "regardless of how the worker is, a job is a job" meaning, well, he is presumably contracted to work there & so can even the bureau just ignore private company's contracts like that. since he follows it up with 'wouldn't the bureau be saving the security team underground daydream first if they could get people out legally like that'
Q. Did Lee Gyeol's way of speaking change when he was reacting to KSE criticizing him giving his phone number too easily?
A. Lee Gyeol's way of talking changed earlier in the convo, he goes from speaking utmost respectful language to speaking in casual language (the way he communicated with KSE in his student guise) the moment KSE confirms he's the transfer student. Here he calls him kkondae aka 'old fart' (๊ผฐ๋) which is a term for a stuck-in-their-way old person and EHJ's nickname for RJK.
Q. What words did KSE use to ask Lee Gyeol about whether he heard anything from the ghost over the phone?
A. I'd tl the whole thing as 'Did you hear anything like this? a voice, sounding like it's calling for their lover... a nice voice like that.'
Q. Lee Gyeol's response mentions hearing something like 'flesh rubbing against flesh', is this correct tl?
A. I'd tl it as 'pieces of flesh colliding'. In kr it sounds like typical ghost story creepy stuff.
Q. Lee Gyeol says "thanks to you... The other kids at our school will be doing well too." -> Is this correct tl? Is the implication that the other kids are currently not doing well?
A. It can be read that way but in context I think it's more likely to be "thanks to you ... the other kids at our school are probably doing well, too."
Q. Do we have a name for the ghost poet?
A. KSE in this ep calls them '๋์์ ์ฐ์ธ' (Lover in Paradise)
Q. Did KSE say he doesn't have any tattoos atm?
A. He did! I actually missed it until you pointed this out. He says this current body doesn't have his previous tattoos, nor does it have any signs of contamination. Truly restarting from the bottom with nothing!
Q. Does Soleum say he misses Braun so much in korean as well, or is it a bit exaggerated in the mtl?
A. He does say he misses him a lot! '๊ต์ฅํ' means a lot / very much
---
Thoughts
Jin Nasol helping him smuggle in the glasses!
omg the phone call
hyunmoo 1 team guys mentioned! They're both well... if lee gyeol was telling the truth...
is this not the last we'll see of 'the lover in paradise'?
braun mentioned...! 'I miss him a lot, but at the same time, the fact that I'm missing him at all makes me feel a sense of danger...' aw as always ๐
ooh we go into the ritual table area again! Will we find out about the 'religious activities'...

That said, it's not like he realized anything about his circumstances the first time he fell into DER either. Like he didn't realize he was a good friend or anything. He had no clue as to how he ended up there. I think most readers just thought 'transmigration' and moved on because not all novels go into detail about the logistics of ending up in another world.
Since we're reading from KSE's pov, our info is limited!
I think people are just making the natural assumption that
1) his constant dreams of the pop up store is both connected to DER world fr, and a dream he can wake up from, at the same time (since previously he was able to leave the pop up store by waking up)
2) BDS probably wrote about him setting up the water wake up method as a set-up for a later scene where he is forced to wake up at a dramatic moment or something
Q. How did KSE fall down into the hole / where did the statue come from?
A. KSE sees the passageway to underground & it's so dark that it just looks like a dark hole -> he puts one foot forward into the passageway -> turns out there's no stairs so he just falls downstairs -> tries to grab onto whatever he can -> grabs onto what turns out to be a piece of the broken wooden floor -> but then, later realizes that it's not a piece of the floor he was holding on to, but a statue -> statue is wrapped in rough string, which burrows into his hand
Q. Is he wearing the new glasses?
A. He put them in his pocket last ep & it wasn't mentioned again. I'm assuming it'll get a proper intro later!
Q. Is the poem (said by the ghost) original?
A. As far as I can tell, it is.
Q. Does RJK talk similarly to Lee Gyeol?
A. RJK talks in a strict & respectful way to everyone including fellow agents. It's how one might imagine to be the textbook way to speak to a civilian imo. Lee Gyeol also spoke this way over the phone.

the agent over the phone betting on KSE being human & trying to help him get outโฆ bureau is bureau as always
