For my non-DCC reading followers, this is a description of a trooper explicitly described as “My first thought was ‘space marines’” and “Spelljammer/Warhammer bullshit.” Readers, I tell you, when I read this description as a 40k nerd, I cackled.
I’m not sure if this will be helpful to anyone, but you literally do not have to be a good writer to write and post fan fiction. Yes you will naturally get better at writing and finding your voice the more you do it but you do not have to be or become a professional level writer to enjoy writing and sharing fics. It’s common to hear people praise fic writers by saying their work is better than published books, and while I think this comes from a good place, that’s not the norm or expectation. There is also a sentiment that fic writing is “good practice” for becoming a better writer or doing something else later, but if fic is the only creative writing you ever do that is literally okay. Your technical skill does not mean you cannot have fun and build community with your writing, or that other people cannot love and find meaning in your work.

TIL a family in Georgia claimed to have passed down a song in an unknown language from the time of their enslavement; scientists identified the song as a genuine West African funeral song in the Mende language that had survived multiple transmissions from mother to daughter over multiple centuries (x)
In 1997 Amelia’s daughter, Mary Moran, and other members of the Moran family were invited to Sierra Leone, West Africa, where they were welcomed in Freetown by Sierra Leone’s President and then flown by helicopter to the country’s interior. There, in the small village of Senehun Ngola, Mary and Bendu Jabati met and sang this song together for the first time. Years earlier, Bendu’s grandmother had told her that this song, which had been passed down in her village from mother to daughter for centuries, would one day reunite her to long-lost relatives.
In addition to finding out where in Africa her ancestors were abducted into slavery, Mary Moran discovered the meaning of the Mende song: a processional hymn for the final farewell to the spirit, it was sung in Senehun Ngola by women as they prepared the body of a loved one for burial.
(The OP's link leads to a site with a recording of the song sung by both Mary Moran and her mother, Amelia)
what they don’t tell you about being a writer is that returning to a long fic you haven’t touched in a while means rereading 50k words first because you don’t actually remember your own fics that well
pop health science is so annoying bc it'll be like "did you know? eating strawberries will give you mega cancer" and you're like pfft whatever begone influencer. but sometimes then you'll see a reasonably credible article like "Study Shows Possible Link Between Strawberries and Mega Cancer" and you're not usually the type to follow that kind of thing religiously but idk maybe you should consider not eating strawberries? but then there's another article saying "Strawberry/Mega Cancer Study Debunked" and it turns out the original study had a sample size of 3 and was funded by Big Blueberry, and strawberries may have a small connection to mega cancer but only if you are genetically predisposed to mega cancer and eat 50 strawberries every day. so you return to your strawberry eating life. but whenever you eat strawberries in public someone tells you about the mega cancer.
And now I’m craving strawberries. 😆

I know other people have talked about this, but I was thinking today (while writing "Mother" pt. 2 of all things) about Sanguinius, and the weight he carries upon his grand shoulders.
Sanguinius is the golden child. He's the one everyone points to and says "Him, he's the standard we all should live up to. He is perfection. He is The Great Angel."
He's beautiful, warm, and kind, with a mixture of both intelligence and wisdom that makes him the perfect leader. Everyone looks up to him- even some of his brothers (whether they admit it aloud or not).
He is talented in so many ways, and the image of him with his great wings is so wonderous that no one could ever forget. Even if history was destroyed, Sanguinius would remain in humanity's memory.
He knows this. He carries this with him every day.
Sanguinius holds the impossible weight of even more impossible expectations and somehow still manages to succeed. And that only makes the weight heavier.
He has the love of his father and brothers, but these burdens cannot be shared. He cannot show himself to be weaker or Less Than, simply because he cannot be those things.
No one can see the edges of darkness that occasionally eat at him. No one can see the way he curls into himself when he's alone and struggles to breathe. No one can see how he pulls his own feathers out when overly stressed or anxious.
They cannot see how badly his thirst for blood truly is. And how he fears that if he lets go, his sons will let go, and he cannot have that happen. He cannot disappoint everyone like that.
Because their failure is his failure, and Sanguinius does not fail.
Sanguinius cannot fail.
Anyway, this all came from the idea that Sanguinius has panic attacks and would be the absolute hardest primarch to get to open up and be "himself" because he doesn't even really know who that is anymore.
He wears his mask of perfection every day and if he ever let it slip, he's left believing that the Empire would fall.

No idea who the mouse guy is, but Meriden is indeed a terrible villain. However, comparing him to the sanity destroying Lovecraftian entities like Chaos is basically coughing baby vs. Hydrogen bomb.

Man I wish all my unfinished wips were finished. If only there was a solution to that problem. Oh well!
Rewatching the original "The Little Mermaid" animated movie while working on something else... I can't quite recall at the moment (early into it atm) if this movie ever establishes Eric as the heir of the throne of his kingdom.
I think it'd be really funny if Eric was actually a younger brother. So, like, maybe he's a duke, actually, but he still gets the title of Prince. Travels the sea a lot, unlike a more landlocked heir. Hanging out at this summer seaside palace while the rest of the family is elsewhere for some reason.
Like, imagine Eric's parents and older brother and maybe sister-in-law and niblings getting that letter at the end of this movie. Nearly drowned. Miraculously washed ashore. Fell in love with a mysterious voice and then a mute girl. Got enchanted by a shape-shifting sea witch and nearly married her. Killed the sea witch after she turned into a giant. Married the aforementioned girl who turned out to be the beloved youngest daughter of the mythical King Triton instead and have now established a strong alliance with the merpeople. Wild summer! Wish you were here!
