I have been in fandom spaces for a long time, mostly quietly writing fanfiction on ao3, and this is my first time back on Tumblr since I was in high school.
Genuinely happy to be back, coming here felt like coming home.

Aroace in aerospace made me giggle its so perfect.
There's just so much hilarity in the whole 24 hour livestream that catches (almost) everything that happens on the Hail Mary in general like. Grace is so accidentally funny and it's so perfect.
I'm just thinking about how in the book he whines that saving Earth is getting in the way of his hobbies (studying Rocky) and just. Imagining that he says that out loud, looking right at the camera and for an embarrassingly long time people think he's serious. It's one of the only times Stratt appears in chat, telling him to remember what he's there for.
To which he reads it, then looks at the camera. Grabs it, pulls it close, and says.
"Funny thing about that- I CAN'T!"
Breathe, Ryland, there's no reason for you to be so upset. You clearly volunteered for this, you shouldn't be so mad at her.
"Sorry about that chat, I'm fine no-" Cue Grace tripping over his own feet and falling flat on his face, sending the camera flying.
Rocky can be heard laughing so loudly the (somehow not broken) camera catches it all the way from the dormitory where he was supposed to be napping.
Simon wants to see the stars. He wants to leave Erid and explore space.
Grace does not. He's happy where he is, thank you very much. He loves Simon, but he can't do it. He just can't.
Simon doesn't force him. How could he? Grace is his savior. His angel. His everything. Even if he doesn't understand why Grace wants to live in a fishbowl, he wont take him out of it without consent.
Anyway, bloodymary angst where Simon leaves and Grace realizes what he lost too late.
There was also a time when I dropped a bag of cookies and went NOOOO only to realize they landed in their bag so, whew, safe. And then I snatched the bag. From the wrong end. And they spilled all over the floor. In about 2.7 seconds it went something like,
*Plop.*
No!
Oh phew.
*Snatch.*
Nooo!
*muffled weeping.*
Why are you so Ryland Grace coded I'm sobbing.
Like. Okay. I'm gonna hold your hand while we walk through this imaginary adventure together.
Grace has steady hands. He's a molecular biologist, he kinda has to. He could probably do surgery if he had the proper education for it. He doesn't drop things as often as you'd think.
Sure, he trips over his own feet, but that's a different problem.
So I'm imagining like. That this happens to him and it's a total fluke. He gives a little "Aw darn it" before trying to pick them up.
But he definitely misses the first time. Like he has to reach twice before he grabs the bag. Then lifts. Then the cookies go all over the floor.
He stares, looking from the bag, to the floor, then his head slowly turns to see if he was standing where the cameras could see him and yep. yeah. they caught everything.
He proceeds to sit like this
For like ten minutes as he comes to terms with the fact that Earth continues to see nothing but his flaws (this is inherently not true, Grace is beloved world wide he just refuses to see it)
Funny little story, had a friend who was twitch streaming Just Dance, decided to entertain the peoples and entered frame from off screen and proceeded to do a high kick behind the two friends who were dancing. In socks. On a wood floor. Very enthusiastically. Do you see where this is going? I didn't.
I royally biffed it. I mean, comedic timing, movie level pacing, is this a bit, what-do-you-mean-you-didn't-plan-that, biffed it. High kick, slip, land on my left butt cheek, am now too low to be in frame, laid on the floor in my shame.
Anyway, do with that what you will 💅
I'm laughing so hard I'm actually crying because let's be so real that's exactly what would happen to Grace.
There would be so many clips and gifs and stickers of him falling over. It would be all over the internet within minutes.
Rocky's chirping laughter goes on for a long time, and if Simon from Iron Lung is there, he has to leave the Don't Go Crazy room because he, too, is laughing- you can hear it from wherever he runs to. Grace is red faced and totally embarrassed, but he can't help finding humor in it either.
Rocky does not let him forget.

[Mmm, no, Grace no do EVA right now. Too stupid. Will fall again like when dancing.]
It's a good distraction, though. The ridiculousness of the moment helps people watching to forget for a short time that not only is the Earth dying, but this silly goofy man that was sent to Tau Ceti to save them is also going to die.

one of my favorite tropes in writing about aliens is the idea of an intergalactic zoo.
like, that one species of alien thinks they're so much higher above all other sentient life that they treat them like animals. yoinking them off their planets to live in enclosures for their people to visit for entertainment.
anyway, au where grace and rocky end up yoinked off of Erid and they have to figure out how to save themselves, each other, and the rest of the trapped peoples aboard.
oh, also, grace isn't alone. they found simon, too.
This fic is ending up more low key than I thought it would. Probably because there is an oc present. But I'm not mad about it, cause that meanst I can make it wild in other ways.

Who wants to be held by human hands, but something wont let him. He's scared. Scared that it's going to hurt. Because even before his mind remembers what happened, his body remembers.
Ryland Grace who flinches away when someone reaches out to him, who cannot accept any kind of contact that he does not first initiate (which is surprisingly rare for living in a small space)
Has anyone talked about how it's extremely unlikely that Eridians are all rock people and that it's also unlikely the sentient peoples of the planet Erid all speak in musical tones, or can I open that can of worms?
I spent some time talking to some friends about this
Let me expand and correct my wording as i said this very poorly, if I may
Eridians are comprised of (according to the book) inorganic materials. And yes, rocks are included in that but you know what else?
Metals. Salts. Acids too, I believe.
Depending on the environment they live in, it makes sense that Eridians don't all look like rock rocks. I've seen lots of ocs that are gemstone-y, and that's beautiful keep doing that, but I think we're missing out on some really funky possibilities.
Eridians that are see-through because they're made of a kind of quartz, or that look like bone, or that appear fluffy because they're covered in small mineral-y needles (which is a real thing, apparently).
Eridians made of iron or gold or copper (or some similar metals)
Diamond Eridians, salt crusted Eridians, Eridians that "sweat" acid. Eridians made of obsidian who can withstand heat better than most but their carapaces are brittle and break easily.
Are we seeing the vision?
But if I'm honest, the most important part of this post to me is the language thing.
Yes, they're aliens so them having a universal language isn't the end of the world, but I really. Don't like that. Erid is huge- bigger than Earth. The idea that Eridians on this side of the planet and that side of the planet singing the same notes in the same tunes with the same "instrument" (for lack of a better word) just doesn't. Make sense to me.
Give me Eridians who speak in strings or horns. Rocky, in the book, is given a kind of electric keyboard sound. Give me classic piano. Organ. Flutes.
But also, consider Eridians who don't use musical sounds.
Eridians who tap their claws together (like Morse code or sign language).
Or if you wanna get weird with it, think of the noises you hear every day that you don't think about.
Eridians that click and/or whistle. Eridians that sound like the whirring of a fan or rustling of leaves. Eridians who buzz like insects.

Do I put an oc in my livestreamer Ryland Grace fic as a lab assistant (kind of like the request from the other day but also not bc it might be more romantic than platonic I havent decided yet)
He doesn't look at the camera. Hasn't been, really, for the past several minutes while he's explained what's happening. What's about to happen.
"Or I can save Rocky."
The people watching already know what he's going to pick. He's not asking their opinions, even if it sounds like he might be.
"I don't know how this is going to end."
He finally looks up, his tired yet resolute eyes staring through the lense, his gaze penetrating the void straight to Earth.
"But I know I can't just sit here and do nothing."
Ryland Grace stands, moving to set the camera on a shelf and stepping back, wiping a hand down his face, then running it through his hair. He looks back at the camera and puts his hands on his hips. He can see the chat scrolling by faster than he can read it from the laptop in his periphery.

Ryland Grace and his Best Friend Ever Rocky exploring the stars, searching for other life, finding Simon and other aliens and sharing everything via livestream that goes to Earth and Erid somehow because it brings joy and whimsy and also I said so
Thinking about my livestreamer Ryland Grace and I started giggling cause like.
If we go more into the book lore, Rocky doesn't have a voice. He sings his musical notes, and Grace understands because he's got his translator and actually spent time learning the different sounds and what they mean, but he never gives Rocky a way to speak in the traditional sense. So I'm now imagining that being what people on Earth see.
Just a guy talking, and a rock spider humming whale songs back at him, and everyone is so sure Grace is making half of it up cause there's just no way he can actually understand. It isn't until he sits down and talks through the actual technology and how it works that people realize that he isn't going completely insane, but only a little bit insane.
