Alternatives to Squishmallow
So as many of you have probably already heard, Jazwares, the company that produces Squishmallows, is donating to charities that support Israeli soldiers and the IDF. They’re also supporting Canary Mission, which has been doxxing people who speak out against Israel. BDS hasn’t called for a boycott against them, but I can’t in good faith spend my money on their products, and I would strongly encourage everyone who enjoys plushies to really think long and hard about if you want to give your money to a company that’s helping support genocide!
But the holidays are coming up, and lots of us enjoy plushies and were fans of Squishmallow, and were planning to give Squishmallows to friends and family this year.
Fortunately, there are a number of great plushie companies out there, and I want to promote some of my favorites in the hopes that folks will get their plushie fix from a source that doesn’t side with Israel. So without further ado:
Fluffnest
Fluffnest got their start on Kickstarter a few years ago, and I adore the round shapes of their PuffPal plushies! My favorite is Pete the Possum, which is probably the best possum plush I’ve ever seen. I’ve also got a beautiful moth from their Kickstarter and I’ve been wanting their bats for ages. They also recently had a Kickstarter for an Animal Crossing-esque video game featuring their plushie characters and it looks fantastic.
Squishables
I can’t get over the plague doctor plushies. They’re so perfect and cute, and they’ve released other variations of them called Alter Egos, like a ghostly version, an alien, or a really sweet cottagecore one! They’ve got a ton of variety, but what I like the most are the fantasy plushies. There’s a lich! There are dragons and demons! Cryptids! Biblically accurate angels! A lot of really fun stuff!
Also they do a lot of great charity work! Right now they’re doing an auction for the Food Bank of New York City.
AfternoonFika
AfternoonFika is a very small business of only three people, but their plushies are extremely cute. They tend to sell out fast, so I recommend following them on social media to stay on top of any restocks! They recently released a line of dinosaurs that are precious, and of course I love their iconic cactus cat and cinnamon bun bunny.
Jellycat
Jellycat has been around since 1999, so they’re the oldest of these companies. They’ve got great designs, a ton of variety, and a lot of their plushies are made to be cuddled on and not just displayed. All three of my tiny nephews sleep with a different stuffed dog from Jellycat. My mom has a sun and several succulents that she uses as decorations. There’s a little something for everyone who enjoys plushies!
If you have any other favorite companies I haven’t mentioned, feel free to add on! I’ve enjoyed Squishmallows for a while now and I’m sad to see their leadership coming out on the side that’s committing war crimes on a daily basis, but this is a good time to discover new favorite plushie companies! And remember, money speaks loudly. Even if BDS hasn’t called for a boycott of Jazwares, it sends a message when sales start dropping for companies that support genocide. It’s a small thing, but the little things we do can add up!

This is being reposted, for the advent of American Thanksgiving, on November 17th, 2023. American Thanksgiving this year is on November 23rd.
If you are seeing this after November 21st 2023 do NOT come crying to me about it being too late. That ain’t my fault. I Do Not Control The Rate At Which Turkey Thaws
okay so this is not an ‘official’ metric by any scale but i am curious so i just bullshitted my own (explanation on levels under the poll)
what’s your horror media tolerance level?
level 1
level 2
level 3
level 4
level 5
level 6
level 1 - can’t tolerate horror at all, actively avoids it at all costs
level 2 - will watch a horror movie with friends/family if convinced but will definitely not enjoy it. screams at jumpscares and covers eyes at tense moments
level 3 - can occasionally consume horror media. very easily startles at jumpscares. usually feels anxious/paranoid afterward
level 4 - startles at jumpscares and generally feels uneasy after consuming horror media. avoids anything horror-related at night time
level 5 - jumpscares are less effective, but can still startle. feels anxious during tense moments. horror mostly causes unease only at night time
level 6 - has no problem consuming any kind of horror media alone at night. is largely unaffected by jumpscares. horror causes no feeling of fear or anxiety
Are you alright, honey? You've barely put your blorbo in situations
Okay but back when I could afford a therapy my psychiatrist asked if I had written any fanfiction or planned any out in my head, and I was "nah, not really." And she nodded and looked down at her notes and was like "so how do you feel about possibly trying Zoloft?"
I started laughing and she was like "I know it sounds funny but it's been six months without you engaging in your favorite hobby and that's a sign the depression is getting to a point where we might why try some treatments with meds in addition to therapy."
So like. yeah.

After the hospital bombing, I finally heard back from my grandmother and confirmed that several of my relatives were murdered by Israeli bombing. Seven of them, to be precise. Three are still going, including her. We've been talking constantly ever since.
Asked if it was possible to head south, and was told they did but were also bombed there. So they decided to go back home, in Zeitoun. Their home was bombed and they were pulled out of the rumble, then driven by ambulances to the al-Ahli Arab Hospital. There were people in every corner. Gazans sheltering, sleeping on the floor. Gazans dying on the floor, waiting for beds.
Four were declared dead on arrival, three were in need of surgery and other three were just bandaged. Then, a bomb was dropped in the parking lot that made parts of the ceiling collapse, like Dr. Ghassan Abu Sittah reported in that horrific conference/interview. Those in need of surgery died.
By the way, just in case you didn't know: the Church of Saint Porphyrius, the third oldest in history, bombed by Israel a few days back, was located near the hospital.
When looking for new shelter, they saw schools with signs hanging outside, "We can't take any more families." They met families, sympathetic but already sheltering too many people. They're now staying in an apartment building they found empty. Sleeping in the corner of the living room. If the family comes back, they'll apologize and leave.
Told me she was saving her phone battery for when the bombing stopped, and she had to ask for help to rebuilt the neighborhood. But she doesn't think it's gonna stop anymore. The ones still with her are mute most of the time, like they're saving energy, but she feels lonely and wanted to talk. There's no internet and to connect to WhatsApp, people are buying "a card from the supermarket, there's a password and username." Not sure what she meant. Still, the internet is inconsistent and won't load neither videos or images nor pages, so she doesn't know what's happening on the outside world.
Told her there were a lot of people protesting to stop the genocide, she replied, "The bombings are getting worse by the day." The bombing yesterday was the worst she ever witnessed. The entire neighborhood is infested with the smell of death, of decomposing bodies. Bodies are piling up in the streets and she's not sure if it's because they ran out of places to store them, but most of them are in bags. The smoke of the bombings hide the blue sky—she hasn't seen the clouds for a while.
Asked if I could share their pictures, names and dreams with people and was told, of which I partly agree, "they're not entertainment." If anyone genuinely cared, they would be alive—I'd argue there are people who do care, but I'm not gonna lecture her pain. And they don't deserve to be used to fulfill someone's sick fantasy. Told me to remember what some Israelis do with pictures of dead Palestinians. And I do.
For those of you who are not familiar, many times before settlers got together to celebrate the murder of Palestinians. For one, in 2015, Israeli settlers set a house in Duma, West Bank on fire. An 18-month old baby, Ali Dawbsheh, was burnt alive. Both parents later died of wounds and only a 5-year-old, Ahmad, survived, although severely injured.
Two celebrations of their murder are widely known, one at a wedding and others outside the court in which two were indicted for the terrorist attack. In the wedding, guests stabbed a photo of the toddler, Ali, while others waved guns, knives and Molotov cocktails. Israel's Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben-Gvir, was present.
That's what happens in an apartheid. Palestinians are so abused by authorities that their "innocent civilians" come to accept the brutality as necessary or are desensitized by our suffering. After all, it's been 75 years—get used to it!
So I won't risk the image of my loved ones, in fear they are used in these kinds of depravity. I will say, though, the world lost a young footballer. Lost a female writer and an aspiring ballerina. Lost a kind father, who was also a great cook, and a loving mother that enjoyed sewing and other types of handicraft art. Lost a math teacher and a child that wanted to become one.
People think Israel is testing new weapons on them. There's civilians arriving at the hospital with severe burns, which they thought was from white phosphorus, but apparently the pattern is different from the one caused by white phosphorus. It's widely believed Israel tests weapons in Palestinians.
Jeff Halper, author of War Against the People, a book on Israel's arms and surveillance technology industries, said: "Israel has kept the occupation because it's a laboratory for weapons."
They've ran out of drinkable water and the "aid" Biden sent was only for the South of Gaza and no fuel, for hospitals, was allowed in. Many shelves in the supermarket are empty. She said many are convinced that if they don't die from the bombing, they'll die from starvation or dehydration, or whatever disease will develop from the dirty water they're drinking.
Told me all people do now is pray, cry and die. Told me she hopes West Bank is spared. Told her Israel bombed a mosque in West Bank and dozens of Palestinians in West Bank are being murdered by settlers, so she bided me goodbye.
Am I hitting a PEM wall, or is my ADHD brain just bored and trying to make me fall asleep (aka sleep intrusion) because it would literally rather be unconscious than bored...
These are the questions I ask myself as I tightrope walk between disorders.
Sleep intrusion! It's called sleep intrusion!! I have a word for it now! I can point at it and say that's what is happening!
I feel so vindicated, even my friends with Adhd don't believe me when I tell them that when I get bored enough it's like my body starts slamming on the off button, like it's desperate to power down rather than endure another second of boredom or tedium
I thought for a long time I was fucking narcoleptic
Same. I got tested when I was younger because I used to shut down in class like a puppet whose strings just got cut.
20+ years later I was reading about ADHD sleep disorders—the emphasis of which is usually on delayed sleep disorder and insomnia—and read about sleep intrusion and lost my mind because despite all the ADHD work I do in therapy, and despite me bringing up these bouts of exhaustion, no one mentioned it.
Also, yeah, it was ADHD sleep intrusion. I got away from the Boring Task and suddenly no longer felt like I’d been smacked with a 2 by 4.
Fucking dopamine seeking brain.
So.... I read the article because honestly this sounds a LOT like narcolepsy. And in part of the article it mentioned that it was often misdiagnosed as EEG negative Narcolepsy. But then the next sentence was about how they don't know what causes it accept maybe boredom.
Okay.... so I have narcolepsy with cataplexy. Many of these symptoms are similar to the Excessive daytime sleepiness part of narcolepsy and guess what helps us to stay alert during the day?? You guessed it! ADHD meds! So I guess my question is, why can't these things overlap? Why can't adhd be more prone to Narcolepsy? And vice versa? Why can't these things that act almost identical and are treated with the same medication hold hands?
Is there a difference im missing that makes it a specific one and not the other? Or is it just that, because Narcolepsy is often treated as a sleep disorder and not a disabling chronic condition that it is, that the risk of being associated with it might be harmful to those with ADHD?
I'm rambling at this point but it just feels like a whole "ew no, it's not this awful thing called narcolepsy! It's a specific special ADHD thing, please don't associate us with narcolepsy!"
And I might feel that way because I'm frustrated with my own condition and frustrated by the limitations and angry at the world because of it. ADHD sufferers and Narcolepsy sufferers deserve better treatment, better accommodations, and a united front because honestly we have a lot of overlap
I think they make the emphasis on the distinction because those of us who experience intrusive sleep as part of our ADHD aren't considered "severe" enough to be diagnosed with narcolepsy or miss several diagnostic milestones, so we get shunted off to the side with a less scary sounding name for it*.
I know when I did sleep studies in my 20s, I was told I didn't hit several of the major requirements for diagnosis, therefore, I did not qualify for further investigation. They also failed to tell me I likely had delayed sleep phase syndrome (also common in ADHD), but they did mention my lack of sleep at night was the reason for my daytime sleepiness. And that was basically it. I got a pat on the head and was told to develop better sleep hygiene.
I can't emphasize enough how much of our problems with sleep are attributed to willful bad habits.
Granted, that was over a decade ago now, and I'd be interested to find out if the criteria has changed/what would happen if they tested me during the day as well while I'm bored. But that would also require doctors to take the sleep irregularities of ADHD seriously instead of the whole disorder being treated as the shiny-can't-sit-still-disorder with every single treatment option being about productivity over quality of life🙃.
The number of people in the notes saying, "This happens to me when I get bored while driving; it's like my brain turns off," is terrifying. Like how is that not a major cause for concern? Why is there not more emphasis on the effects of sleep disorders that go hand in hand with ADHD? Why are they having to find out about it because I bitched about it on a Tumblr post?
Basically, I agree with you. Both disorders deserve better, and the overlap needs to be looked into. But I really don't think the distinction is because ADHD people are going, "Ew, not that icky disorder" (although if any of them are, they can meet me in the pit, and I'll skin them alive). It's because neither disorder is taken as seriously as it should be.

*This happens with EDS as well. A lot of people are being told they don't have hEDS but HSD instead, even though the two things are functionally the same. They tightened the diagnostic criteria in 2017 to try and find the genetic marker for hEDS. Unfortunately, this has led to a weird belief among medical professionals that HSD is less severe than hEDS and is used to deny patients access to treatment, even though it can be just as painful and debilitating and lessened with treatment.
The reasoning for tightening up the diagnostic criteria was sound. The outcome for the community due to medical neglect and bias has been... less than great.
