Fic prompt #87
Dpxdc
I love the trope where Danny becomes the Ghost King, but I was thinking about a phrase I read in a fic some time ago where he says that, as Ghost King, he is the judge, jury, and executioner.
It got me wondering: has there ever been a fic where he was literally the judge of souls?
We know Pariah Dark declared himself Ghost King by force. He conquered the Infinite Realms; he wasn’t chosen. So what if the Ghost Zone already had an actual judicial system before Pariah took over? A court responsible for judging newly arrived souls, determining unresolved obligations, deciding whether crimes committed in life still carry over into death, and settling disputes between ghosts.
Then Danny defeats Pariah.
Everyone assumes he’ll become the new king…
…only to discover that the position of “Ghost King” doesn’t actually exist in any legal sense. Pariah made it up.
What does exist is the highest office in the Realms: the High Judge.
And, thanks to his absolutely ridiculous résumé—former Protector Spirit, defender of both the living and the dead, countless world-saving feats, repeatedly choosing mercy over vengeance despite every reason not to—Danny is unanimously appointed to the position almost immediately.
Now he’s the one deciding whether a soul deserves redemption, punishment, reincarnation, or release.
The DC universe eventually finds out.
Maybe the Justice League requests an audience to argue that Constantine’s soul should be considered off-limits because of all the deals he’s made.
Maybe Jason Todd gets summoned to testify after the Joker finally dies, because no one is better qualified to speak on the impact of the Joker’s crimes.
Maybe a villain tries to exploit a loophole by dying before sentencing, only to discover that earthly justice is no longer the only court with jurisdiction.
Or perhaps Batman is horrified to learn that the final appeal for every soul isn’t before a god…
…it’s before a twenty-year-old in a black-and-white hazmat suit eating a burger while reading through centuries of case law.
—————
If anyone has more ideas for how this premise could play out—I’d love to hear them.
Now I'm picturing Danny reluctantly applying to law school, because he does NOT feel qualified for this job. At least let him pass the bar before he is relegated to rendering judgement on all the souls in the universe! Souls went unjudged for thousands of years, they can wait a few more years until he gets his degree and some job experience, geeze
Okay but what if Danny starts working under Bruce’s personal lawyer as like an internship thing.
So imagine Bruce’s surprise when as Batman he shows up in front of the High Judge of Souls only to see his lawyer’s intern in front of him just color swapped and looking stressed.
And like he’s met Danny he knows Danny. He knows that kid is very kind and wants to do right by people to the point of Bruce has been concerned about Danny in the legal field, not because he doesn’t think Danny is bad at understanding law or anything, but because the kid has such a big heart and courtrooms can be ruthless.
But now he has recontextualize everything he knows about Danny. And he is a good detective he knows Danny is a good person but now Bruce is having two theories
1) Danny is much older than 20 and is trying to understand human law to possibly better judge human souls
2) Danny is new to this position in the cosmos and is trying to gain context of how laws work/legal jargon by getting a law degree and working as an intern (based on the big ass book in front of Danny he is looking at very stressfully)
He’s leaning more towards the second theory though based on how stress Danny looks and his general disposition screams actual 20-something year old and not unfathomably old like his position would suggest.
Fic prompt #86
Dpxdc
Names mean different things to ghosts and demons, though humans rarely understand the difference.
To a demon, a true name is a vulnerability. It is a chain, a handle, a weapon. In the wrong hands, it becomes power over them.
Ghosts are different.
They do not abandon their old names out of fear. They leave them behind because they no longer fit. A ghost sheds an old identity the same way a snake sheds its skin—not to hide, but because it has outgrown it. The name they choose after death is not a disguise. It is a declaration. It is who they have become.
A ghost’s old name is not forbidden. It simply isn’t theirs anymore.
So if someone knows it, there are only two possibilities. Either they are someone the ghost trusted enough to share a piece of a life that no longer exists… or they learned it by violating that trust and insist on using a name that the ghost has already laid to rest.
One is an act of intimacy.
The other is an act of disrespect.
Too bad the Justice League never learned the difference before they stood before the Ghost King and called him by the name of a dead boy.
I really like stories where Danny has resentment against the Justice League because they didn't do anything to help Amity Park, but I think an AU where he's completely chill about it while they're very much not would be really funny.
Like, imagine that every major ghost attack happens exactly at the same time as world extinction events. Danny has a big fight, goes home, turns on the news and there it is, all hands on deck for major heroes because the universe is in peril.
At some point he just stops checking, he knows the drill, and besides he's handled it anyway. It's all good.
So it really comes as a shock when a hero independently finds out about the GIW and organises a JL intervention. They come to Amity Park and they really don't get why the local teenage hero gives them a thumbs up and tells not to worry, he can handle being dehumanised and hunted for experimentation.
One of Danny's classes (probably Lancer's English in relation to some other text for a high school course) doing a whole discussion about the trolley problem and Danny's sitting there with an epiphany like
"Ah. I am the one guy tied to the second tracks compared to the five on the first. I see. . . Pull the lever, Kronk!"
And sure, it kinda sucks to be on the tracks. But between himself and his problems vs. the whole world and everyone in it; well, Danny is a hero too. He'd never ask them too make a different choice.
Now this I like. And like the original post said it is only the MAJOR ghost attacks, the big kind that would have a large amount of damage or spill over outside of Amity, that just so happen to be at the same time as some world ending threat. I smell clockwork meddling, but why would he? Anyway this should be the case until After the dark Dan arch is over. Then there can be a big ghost attack that happens when the league isn’t already busy.
And just like i said here it is.
The thing about Danny is this:
He doesn’t stop Tim from jumping.
He doesn’t cage him.
He doesn’t clip his wings.
He just waits below the fall.
Because Danny will always catch his bird.

Alfred: Mr. Fenton, you're here quite early.
Danny: I was texting Tim and told him what I was having for breakfast, he told me I should bring him some, so I'm here to deliver! *holds up some containers filled with food, before rubbing his neck shyly* I hope thats okay?
Alfred: If you can get that boy to eat actual food rather than just drink coffee, you're welcome in this house at all hours.
Dancing in the rain
@fluffyjuly Day 17: Dancing in the rain
Tim’s lips are soft. This thought bounces around Kon’s head, echoing as Tim tugs him closer by the waist, breaths mixing until thunder crackles through the sky.
Tim groans, dropping his head onto Kon’s shoulder. “Superboy.” There’s a warning in his voice, and Kon smiles at it. “Please tell me you did not time this with a rain storm.”
“Ok,” Kon chirps, kissing the top of Tim’s head. Tim tries pushing his head for that. “I didn't time this amazing outing with a rain storm.”
“I timed it—” Tim’s head lifts at this, and Kon soothes his agitation with a hand to his cheek, cupping Tim’s face as he kisses him one more time— “so we can have fun!”
Tim’s rebuttal is an instant one, and Kon pouts at it. “You are going to get me sick.”
“I’m not going to get you sick! A little bit of rain don’t hurt nobody.”
“SB, babe, I love you.” Tim grabs his hand, squeezing as if that will make the words go through Kon’s head more clearly. Sadly, Kon’s head is like a rock, and all it does is slide off onto the ground like the rain they’re going to be trapped in. “But you’re Kryptonian. You could stay out here for the whole storm and not be affected.”
Kon lifts Tim in his arms, determined to make him see Kon’s plan here. He sways them, smiling cheekily when Tim instinctively wraps his legs around Kon for support, his hands holding onto his shoulders.
“You mean you don’t want to dance in the rain with me?” Kon pouts, maintaining eye contact with Tim even as he tries to look away. The sky starts sprinkling, small droplets that feel refreshing and cool against their heated skins.
He knows he wins when Tim sighs, a small noise that sounds more like an exhale, but Kon can see how Tim’s mouth twitches. “Fine, but if I get sick, I’m telling Batman on you.”
Kon sputters. “What?! Why would—”
Tim kisses him, laughing even when the rain turns into a proper stream, flattening his hair and sliding down his cheek and neck. Tim’s laugh is beautiful when it’s like this, unfiltered and loud. It makes him look soft, the way his nose scrunches as if to restrain the noise, only succeeding in making him snort instead, his head tilted to the side as if to hide away.
Kon guides his face back and kisses the giggles away, smiling as he swings them in a circle, twirling in a way that has Tim beaming as he calls him an idiot.
Kon: Thank goodness you're safe, Tim. I was ready to go to jail for life when I heard they were going to hurt you.
Tim: Absolutely not! I don't want that to happen.
Dick: Tim is right. Violence and revenge isn't the ans--
Tim: No boyfriend of mine is getting sent to jail. If anything happens in the future, I'll be your alibi. We'll practice it ahead of time so it sounds convincing. Come to my room after we complete the mission.
Imagine going to Amity Park and your relative who lives there hands you a picture of Phantom and below the picture reads
This is Phantom.
Phantom is friendly. Phantom protects our town from other ghosts. No, he does not mean to cause any property damage. Yes, he tries to help clean up the mess. No, you can not approach him.
Don’t go looking for him. He’s scared of people, and we suspect it’s because of ghost hunters. Saying hi might be okay, but don’t be surprised if he leaves. If he approaches you, consider yourself lucky.
Phantom likes space. Don’t be surprised if you see him outside stargazing or in the library reading books on space. If you accidentally make eye contact, simply wave and move on to avoid scaring him. If you see him sleeping, walk away and don’t let the Fentons approach that area.
Many people here at Amity Park love and appreciate our ghost boy for protecting us. We’d hate it if something were to happen to him, so please be polite and respectful.
Have a good day!
Consequences of the Justice League
DP x DC Prompt
The Justice League has had Red Huntress on their list of people to recruit. Yet, they were told to wait because of Constantine. He said that Ghosts are not what they think, and recruiting Red Huntress before Constantine reaches out to Phantom could have dire consequences.
If Constantine is right, then Phantom is a Protector Spirit. And he will need to learn more about Protector Spirits to get Phantom to join Justice League Dark BEFORE the Justice League recruits Red Huntress.
From what the Hellblazer has learned from other Ghosts and such, Phantom is a Protector Spirit that is dangerously close to abandoning his role.
A Protector Spirit that abandons its role is incredibly dangerous. As a Protector Spirit keeps the worst of the worst at bay with just their presence alone. And if a gate to the Infinite Realms has no Protector Spirit nearby, then malevolent Ghosts will come rushing through the gate and cause a lot of destruction wherever they go. Once those malevolent Ghosts are in the living world, they get stronger and more confident. The only way to get those malevolent Ghosts back into the Infinite Realms is with the Protector Spirit that they feared to beat them back into the gate they came from.
Constantine was about to go and recruit Phantom and help the Protector Spirit move the gate, he hears that Red Huntress has been recruited, in front of Phantom, who had quickly run away soon after.
Now they need to find Phantom soon, as in less than a day, the Lingering presence of the Protector Spirit will fade from the gate he was guarding, and then they will be under the constant attacks of malevolent Ghosts because of the Justice League being to impatient.
I know it was intended to say that the malevolent spirits were Danny’s rogues, but wha if it wasn’t?
As it’s stated that the very presence of a protector spirit keeps the evil ones at bay what if Danny’s rogues are the ones who slip through because they are not actually evil or malicious all things conceded, they are just hyper-focused and kinda reckless and selfish, while the evil ones, the REALLY evil ones are prevented outright from crossing the portal by the very fact Danny is around.
I’m speaking of the ghosts of serial killers, cannibals, tyrants, genocide lunatics, dedicated torturers and just about the worst of the worst whose very obsession is to just straight up spread as much pain and suffering as possible. Beings of pure evil with powers that can go up to borderline divine and a singular dedication to bring ruin upon the world and lives of everyone, THAT is what the League just invited to their dimension by rushing things and pushing Danny away from his portal. Constantine is going to yell at them so much that they’d rather Batman take over the scolding (Batman will get his turn anyway once John is away, putting the world in danger out of simple impatience after being warned with an actual complete and logic explanation is just unacceptable in his books).
Becoming an Justice League auxiliary member makes Valerie enthusiastic. She's recognized now, she's got support. A stipend and legal aid and authority. Phantom had fled when he realized Red Huntress was League quality, and with him gone the ghostly activity in Amity Park had lowered considerably. Val knew Phantom had been the leader of the ghosts, encouraging scum to attack the citizens of Amity Park.
The reprieve was nice, even if it meant that the action that had gotten the League's attention had dried up. What did it mean to be a hero whose villains had all left?
Maybe it would have given her time to rekindle her romance with Danny, if he hadn't disappeared the day Phantom did. Val is half convinced Phantom kidnapped him, but if he had the Fentons would have put up a bigger fuss.
Sam and Tucker were pretty sure Danny was dying— not in the death pun etc etc way but truly and permanently. Since…he became phantom there has always been something additional in Danny’s presence. There was no other description beyond wholly Danny until Green 1 and 2 showed up from the justice league for Red Huntress. Red Huntress! Someone just as deep into ecto-phobia as Lex Luthor is xenophobic!
Danny had wanted to disappear into the portal and not come back, thankfully they were able to convince him to stay, hiding out in Sam’s den (which her parents genuinely forgot they had and had become Phantom central for a while).
But Danny was obviously still not here, he was gone and continuing to fade. He hasn’t moved from the cuddle island for over a week and has been catatonic for nearly 2 days. When Sam and Tucker got back from school they tried to comfort him but his human form was misty and became distorted when they touched him. If they couldn’t move him how were they going to get him to the far frozen?
They were on their way back from the Fentons having stolen some ectoplasm hoping it would help Danny when Sam spotted someone she recognized from one of the (many) Justice league press conferences. He stood out because of his shabby coat and generally rumbled appearance. He was hunched over something clearly trying to track ghosts, thankfully Danny’s “rouges” had decided to fuck off while there were so many league eyes (why they’d never done that when Danny asked for finals was a mystery but whatever).
Tucker tried to stop her he really did but anyone who has ever met Sam Manson can tell you no one can stop her when she really decides something.
Constantine was freaking out, Amity Park wasn’t just a thin location in the veil but a nexus center for time and space itself! And phantom? The spider who had spun the web (however knowingly or not). In Constantine’s research he had also found one other vital piece of information, Phantom’s cosmic name, its translation? “Balance” those kind of names are not figurative, almost no entities have a cosmos given name they must forge them through bloodshed and destruction, worse it didn’t seem like it was Phantoms only cosmic name! Constantine couldn’t find any others but he had found several epithets, none of which was translatable to a living mind but the sheer power he felt from the epithets meant he really didn’t need to.
Good news was that the universe wasn’t going to idly allow Phantom to fade or end… Bad News the universe is willing to destroy anything and everything in its path and if Phantom still faded there wouldn’t be a universe.
Tracking Phantom was turning out to be impossible, his energy was steeped into the very veil of amity itself and each day it was growing weaker and the overwhelming evil energies were growing. Constantine was too busy to pay close attention but he knew that one of the bats was here to play detective so lives were already being lost and he was NO closer to locating Phantom. He couldn’t even tell which side of the veil he was on!
Then he got sucker punched by a teenager.
Tucker pulled Sam back, “Sam we need to help Danny we don’t have time to waste on getting arrested by the League!”
“No! It’s their fault they are the ones who did this!”
The trench coat league member, to his credit, was handling this with a lot of grace, simply rubbing his jaw and processing what they were saying.
“Aight that was personal, does that mean you’re friends of Phantom? Do you know where he is?” Constantine grabbed Tuckers shoulder examining the teen closely.
“Tch. We’re not just his friends we’re family. Better than his actual blood relations—save forJazz.” Sam muttered.
“Why do you care? Full offense, you had your chance to talk to him before you recruited huntress.” Tucker shoved the man’s arm off himself. The man grit his death in clear anger rubbing the bridge of his nose as if to relieve a headache.
“They weren’t fucking supposed to. Guy was specifically told to wait until after I had talked to Phantom but he doesn’t BLOODY LISTEN! I need to find Phantom, I can understand him leaving; hell he has every right to. But he has to know what will happen if he does. This recent changes in Amity are just the beginning!”
“Well it might be too fucking late.” Sam snarled.
“If you can locate him I will figure out how to reach him—”
“He didn’t leave, he’s in the den, but nothing we saying to him is registering. I’m not sure he can get physically hear us at this point.” Tucker explained hoping that Constantine was on Phantom’s side and might actually be able to help.
“He’s still in town?” The man cursed in truly the most vulgar language Tucker had ever heard. “To still be physically here and it to feel like this he’d have to be nearly gone?! I’m not a realm’s doctor I don’t know how to stabilize him! I don’t have time to search all of infinity for one!”
“If we knew a doctor would you be able to bring him to us?” That snapped Constantine out of tugging his head out.
“You know a realms doctor?”
“Yeah or at least a healer but he’s kinda taken on a mentor/personal physician role.”
“I can summon him, please take me to Phantom, we are running out of time before he’s permanently gone.”
Frostbite could feel something wrong at the cosmic level— maybe even beyond that. Nothing about the Realms as a whole had changed, the Far Frozen was the same as ever, and yet there was this deep seated feeling of a loved one dying. Of course his fraid was all safe and accounted for in the far frozen, which left only one possibility, Phantom…Danny. But Frostbite didn’t have a way to contact Wulf or travel to the Amity portal, he’d need Cujo to wander by, something highly unlikely without Danny being here already. Hailwind was trying to get his to stop pacing (again) when a swirling portal that stuck of human magic appeared, but it was to Danny’s side of the veil and may be his only chance. Frostbite went through.
Constantine opened the portal focusing on the kids’ impression and connection to Frostbite, but before he could cross to talk to the entity, the entity was coming to him. Huge, hulking and growling deep in his throat Constantine was being stared down by one angry Yeti-realms ghost. A never born by the looks of it, and likely more ancient than civilization.
“I am searching for Phantom do not get in my way.” The yeti growled before seeming to become of aware of where he was and that Tucker and Sam were there too. “Great Fraid! Where is he? Why can I not sense him in his own haunt!”
“It’s bad Frostbite—!”
“It’s obsession rejection, I don’t know how he hasn’t already faded.” The second sentence was out before Frostbite processed the first, a deep howl of agony shook Amity.
“Where?!” He growled, this time laced with sadness rather than anger. Sam and Tucker took of towards the main house (Constantine couldn’t make the sigil in the basement, something he was regretting not forcing.)
When they made it to the room, Frostbite moved way faster than a being of his size had any right to, he went from the doorway to the pile of blankets around Phantom. Immediately taking the fading boy into his arms, cooing and comforting like one would a distressed child.
“Danny, oh sweet coreling. I forget you do not have the instincts of ghosts of your true age. You could not call for me— for clockwork.” Fortnite rested his forward to Danny’s torso, both ghosts’ chests began to glow before a tearing sound and the most powerful energy Constantine ever felt appeared— head turning in search before landing on the boy in the yeti’s arms.
Clockwork, the ancient of Time and oldest being in existence, was scared, eyes widening at Danny’s form before they glowed in red hot anger.
“They obstructed my view. They will pay for this overstep.” Clockwork growled, more to himself that any present company.
“We will deal with the Observants later, I have enforced the tether to his core, but if not for his human side keeping him here while his body died he would be gone. He is not hearing my core. Make him listen to yours.” Frostbite sounded like he was threatening Clockwork, but if the ancient took offense to that kind of disrespect he dint show it, instead his body morphed into that of an old man, he kneeled down so he could reach Danny without removing him from Frostbite’s lap.
Clockwork ran his hands through Danny’s (slightly less see-through) hair. Danny’s core began to glow again and the sound of an endless clock grew louder.
“You are wanted. You are needed.” Clockwork was quiet like he was listening, to someone respond.
“No one hates you, they are loud but few.” Clockwork summoned a round looking glass small enough to fit in two hands, the frame holding it was decorated by a grand star chart. Danny’s eyes opened slightly more, seeing but still far away, Clockwork held the looking glass to face Danny. His eyes moved like watching a picture.
“You do not need to believe me, this is a gift I have been saving, I was waiting for the right time. I regret having done so, the occasion did not matter so much as the reassurance it will give. It shows how you are seen, how you are loved, how those you protect feel protected by you, are comforted by your presence, worry with your absence— for the sake of your absence, and their outrage for the slight against you.” Clockwork was quiet for a time Danny’s eyes taking on more of a shine, tears pearling in his lashes. This time the human onlookers saw Danny’s mouth move, as if muttering, even if they still could not hear his response in the conversation.
“This was not the fated path, The Observants have meddled too far both in causing these fated events and blinding me from them. The League did not intend on recruiting her before you, they came for you. They see you. The one responsible for misunderstanding, for not listening, is facing the anger of the league, but even Batman’s wrath is second to the wrath of the members of Justice League Dark. They had come to recruit you not as spare power in need of training and education, a child not trusted to be left alone. They came to recruit you as an equal, new but no less capable. The Justice League can not have you because Justice of the Dark have claimed you.”
Danny’s eyes again grew bigger, form finally returning to physical and opaque, as he watched whatever new seen played out on Clockwork’s looking glass. Tears finally overflowing down his cheeks like diamonds, glistening and large.
His mouth once again moved, the expression familiar to Sam and Tucker, he always had that look when making a particularly bad self deprecating “joke”. Sam and Tucker walked closer, finally feeling they were able to join in comforting their friend…their family member, their fraid mate.
“I didn’t hear what you said but I know it’s not true just by looking at your face.” Tucker teased, tears also tracking his cheeks.
Clockwork moved behind Danny’s shoulder allowing his fraid to face him. Danny hugged the looking glass to his chest.
“I just said that it’s silly I nearly caused my own final death because I wanted recognition.” Danny spoke, voice thick.
“It was not over recognition at all, you had received what felt like confirmation of a fear and struggle you have held for a long time. You are a guardian and a protector, if protection is unwanted it is harm. Your core took the evidence of your unwanted protection to mean you were hurting people with a sacrifice that was already causing you distress and harm. It is not your fault you could not find enough strength in the people’s who love you are sure in. We all need community beyond the closest and most dear.” Frostbite soothed, ice claws gently stroking the coreling’s scalp.
“I’m sorry I scared you guys.” Danny apologized to all four of them.
“Dummy. You don’t need to apologize you were really hurting and we weren’t able to help you.”
Danny welcomed Sam and Tucker into a hug, Frostbites lap large enough to accommodate all three teens.
“Do not sell yourself so short Midnight Briar, you stayed, you did your best, and it was your efforts that got us to him. Without you we would not have known and I would not have been able to travel at all without you finding the magician.” Frostbite gathered all three into a hug, warm and soft in a way animal fur is.

I'd love to see a dpxdc story where the Justice League knows about Amity Park and the Ghosts the whole time, and does think the ghosts are rogues to be addressed. Doesn't agree with the GIW, maybe doesn't even know about them? THE IMPORTANT PART.
The Red Huntress is the only active vigilante in Amity Park, according to the JL. Phantom is marked as one of her rogues. Maybe the Fentons even are marked as rogues from all the property damages and random shooting/sliming of citizens. Valarie is the only person successfully taking care of the ghosts, masking and suiting up in the classic vigilante way the whole time.
Danny finds out and gets super salty. The boy loves space, meeting Superman and Martian Manhunter would be a dream for him, no way he's not aware of the JL
With that in mind :
Danny couldn't believe it. The Justice League page has finally added Amity Park as a known hotspot to their networks, and has HIM listed as a VILLAIN! HIM!!!
After the amount effort and desperation he's been through, at first trying to get a message for help out to the Justice League, then digging deep and taking care of things himself. (53 phone calls, 129 emails, 2 (ghost) carrier pigeons and the time he tried the Boo-merang while sleep deprived and knocked himself out)
Danny is done. These assholes won't even shut down the GiW or repeal the Anti-Ecto acts.
Valerie wants to be the vigilante of Amity? Good luck to her. Danny is taking his daughter Ellie on vacation.
Yessss! If the Justice league of all people labels him as a Villain? After EVERYTHING he's done for amity? I'd wager he'd take a break and let amity find out just how much of a "Villain" he was. Let them find out just how helpful he actually was.
I don't think he'd go full Villain in response, but definitly would wave it in Valerie's face if she ever wonders why his behavior changed. She's bound to notice things in amity get worse when he stops being around.
That raises the question of how everyone else would react. Would the Justice league realize their mistake or no? Would Valerie change her mind on the Phantom "Menace"?
How long would Danny last in keeping out of things before the chaos of no Phantom to protect amity forces him to act again?
Or would he just float around making it EVERYONES business that he's been labeled as a villain and therefore is staying out of things? As he watches other ghosts wreak havoc and destruction, phantom comes to watch but does absolutely nothing. People ARE going to ask why he isn't doing anything. Perfect time to shove it in their faces
______
Technus is wreaking havoc in the city, ranting about tech domination. Red Huntress is fighting him. He keeps trying to take control of her tech. She's not making much headway
Random civilian that is on the fence about supporting Danny: Phantom, why are you watching? Aren't you going to stop technus?
Danny, eating popcorn in full view as he watches the spectacle: Nah, the justice league labeled me a Villain. Villains don't "Help people"
•••••••••
If things get out of hand, Danny steps in and finishes things super easily, capturing technus in the fenton thermos without a sweat
Danny: oh, but I'm sorry, I'm a Villain aren't I? So maybe I should just *goes to release Technus from thermos*
Everyone:NOO
Meanwhile Valerie is now working way harder as so many more ghosts are being problematic and her most annoying ghost is no where to be seen OR only showing up to watch her fight ghosts that he used to fight all the time(mind you this is all under the assumption that Valerie doesn't know Danny is Phantom, hates phantom but does acknowledge his efforts in helping amity.)
Danny: man, sure would be nice for you if there was another hero here to help you!
Valerie: *shoots phantom*
Danny: *doges* but alas, I'm just another pesky ghost huh
Danny: not like I'm the sole reason that amity still exists
Danny: I never defeated basically any ghost who comes to amity part seeking to cause chaos and destruction.
Danny: I never defeated Undergrowth when he covered the world in his vines and possessed Sam Manson
Danny: I never defeated Vortex when Plasmius set him free and sentenced the world to natural disaster level storms
Danny: I never defeated the Ghost King Pariah Dark after he claimed amity park as his territory, bringing the entire town into the ghost zone after Plasmius woke him from his forced sleep to steal his crown and ring.
Danny: no, I couldn't have. I'm just a villain *eats popcorn as Valerie gets blasted by a ghosts attack*
The jl has outfitted valerie's suit to be compatible with their systems so she can download video recordings of her patrol for training purposes.
The jl get full hd of phantom floating off to the side eating popcorn, occassionally throwing it half-heartedly at whatever ghost valerie is struggling with when she asks for him to tag in, any time now would be great, asshole, and phantom just remarks that he cant because apparently he's a villian.
Red huntress is not here to train at the watchtower or take advise. She is here to drag whoever made the mistake of labeling phantom a rogue without ever consulting her - the designated expert that they themselves recognized for amity park - down to amity to opologize to phantom to his face.
Right now red huntress's biggest problem isnt lack of critique from fellow heroes, her biggest problem is that someone offended her work partner and labelled not only amity parks, but all of earth's biggest line of defense against the realms biggest threats. She needs her partner back yesterday, and she's ready to ream whoever makes this take longer than absolutely necessary to fix.
If whoever did it doesnt fess up, she's fully prepared to release the box ghost on the watchtower and make amity's ghost problem their problem, because they absolutely deserve to suffer the same grief she's been put through.
PLS- I adore this
When Danny had first heard the news he had thought it was a joke - I mean, come on, the Justice League had been seemingly ignoring Amity for god knows how long (his grades… his poor grades know EXACTLY how long) and now that they’d finally elected to pay a smidge of attention to the town, they’d declared him to be a rogue.
What the fuck.
Ancients, weren’t these supposed to be the pioneers of justice? Wise, strong and dependable. And yet, they’d fallen in line with the same dumbassery that his parents & the GIW spout. Sure, there had been that little stint with petty theft but he had been literally mind controlled at the time! The point being, he consistently sacrificed to protect the town - hell, the world! And this is the thanks he gets?…
Heh, that would be a pretty dramatic villain origin story. But despite appreciating the theatrics that would enable, it wasn’t really a path he wanted to go down. (Been there, done that - didn’t even get the T-shirt).
That didn’t mean he couldn’t be a petty shit.
It took a few hours, coupled with some bruising but Danny managed to preemptively wrangle his worse rogues, effectively putting them out of commission for the next week or so - he may be petty but he doesn’t want anyone to actually get hurt.
So, with just those like Box Ghost and Lunch Lady left to cause mayhem; what else to do but have a little holiday? He’d spent so long fulfilling the protection part of his obsession that a chance to indulge the space half would do wonders.
A quick text to Ellie and it’s time for an epic trip to explore the depths of the universe - whilst maintaining a Snapchat streak with Valerie, consisting of cheesy space selfies with captions like “just villain things 🤪”
MEANWHILE : Amity is in CHAOS. Red Huntress is good but there’s only so much she can do - tired, bruised and absolutely pissed, she’s going to kill whichever JL member signed off on this.
Before Ellie gets there Danny just pulls up a chair with his popcorn and soda like
to watch the battles. After two hours of Valerie struggling with Box Ghost and a swarm of ectopusses and Klemper, Ellie finally shows up and looks around, then waves her arms silently asking ‘what the fuck?’
Danny shrugs.
“Apparently I’m a villain now.”
“Oh,” Ellie says, looking confused for a moment then echoes the shrug. “Wanna rob a bank?”
“Do you wanna rob a bank?!”
“I mean. I’ve thought about it. Looks fun on tv. That’s something villains do, right?”
“Eh. It’s kinda boring.”
“When did you rob a bank?!”
“I got mind controlled. But with our powers it’s too easy. There’s no challenge and they can track the money anyway. Nah, I called to see if you wanted to explore Saturn’s moons with me? I wanna see how deep the ice is on Enceladus and if it has giant space whales in the water underneath. Then we could take pictures with Mimas pretending it’s the Death Star. Ooh! Ooh! We could visit Jupiter’s moon Io and act out the scene with Anakin and Obi Wan on Mustafar!”
Ellie’s eyes glowed with excitement.
“You had me at explore but this is the best idea you’ve ever had and I am 1000% in. When do we leave?”
Danny dodged an ecto-blast from Valerie, who was still trying to wrestle Klemper off of her. The chair disintegrated, but Danny’s sad sigh couldn’t be heard over Klemper’s crying for his new friend to hug him back.
Valerie was even louder as she screamed, “DON’T YOU DARE LEAVE ME ALONE HERE, PHANTOM!! I’LL KILL YOU TWENTY MORE TIMES MYSELF!”
“You’re not alone!” He called back, trying not laugh. “You’ve got a new best friend! Not to mention the entire Justice League backs you up now! Why would a villain like me want to stick around when they could show up any moment to fight off creepy evil ghosts like me?”
“I HATE YOU!!”
“You were my brother, Anakin! How’s that for an impersonation?” Danny turned to ask Ellie, ignoring the scream of rage and dodging another ecto-blast.
“Needs work.”
“Ah well, we’ve got time to practice. This trip should take us about a month. Come on, I’ve already packed our bags.”
i feel like there's potential for duplicate* shenaniganry, here.
what if the reason Valerie is struggling so much isn't that she's not a competent ghost hunter in her own right, just that she's gotten approximately no sleep for the last 4 days because she's had to chase down ghosts that Danny would normally just peel off a duplicate for before rolling over and going back to sleep?
...and if he's already that used to using them; well. there's no reason for a few not to stay behind with protest signs and lawn chairs and a megaphone or two, to go with that popcorn. while he and ellie are off exploring the moons of the solar system.
I genuinely adore the idea that Valerie and Danny consider each other coworkers because that opens such a giant box of shenanigans
Valerie fucking hates Phantom’s ghostly glowing guts, but he’s competent, and well meaning. Val knows that nine times out of ten, if he’s done something criminal, something else is going on.
She wouldn’t go as far as to say she respects the asswipe, but she understands the necessity of their song and dance. Valerie takes the night shift so Phantom can rest, Phantom takes the day shift so she can go to school/work/job interviews. She appreciates it (in the dead of night, when no one can witness it). Therefore, Val decides pretty early on that she’s going to beat up the Justice League.
It took her a while, because first she had to find one of Phantom’s duplicates (which only appear during a fight), and then she had to bargain with it (which is difficult, trust her). The duplicate was listening well enough, so Val figured this matched up well enough with one of the directives. Phantom doesn’t like wasting Ecto on his off-shift drones, and that means they don’t have a lot of brains, if you catch her drift. There’s a reason why you’re more likely to catch Red Huntress cooperating with “Phantom” at night.
The duplicate floats by her head as she shoots at the swarm of ectopi. Ectopuses? It doesn’t matter.
“So, what, you’re just gonna go beat up a member of the JL?”
“Yes.” Val focuses on the swarm as the duplicate considers his options. This is one of the more formal duplicates. Tends to go by Shout if she remembers right. She really hopes she’s right, and that this is Shout, because Phantom tends to spare him more ecto— and brainpower. The duplicate hums. “Okay!” He grabs his thermos and sucks the whole fucking swarm up.
“I’m beating Phantom up when he gets back,” She warns Shout, eerily calm. Likely because she was plotting murder. She’d been dealing with that swarm for thirty minutes. Shout shrugs. “Yeah, he figured.”
Val took a moment to seethe, then pushes it into the box she’s reserving for the Justice League. Val starts up into the sky. “Bye, Shout; see ya on patrol.”
No response. Val looks behind her and finds Shout drop-jawed. “You remember my name?”
What kind of question is that? Of course she does. “You’re my coworker,” She says slowly, because that should explain everything.
Shout bursts into a massive grin. “Yup! I’m a person!”
Val opens and closes her mouth. She shrugs. Yeah, that’s basically what she said anyway. Val heads for the Hall of Justice. She’s got heads to bash.
Ok ok ok. Wow. Shout is in my head now. I love him. This is where my brain went the instant I finished reading this.
(Side note, @plotwholls can I use Shout in a fanfic in the future?)
Shout was actually kind of excited to see what Val was going to do to the Justice League. Maybe he could leave Amity Park to some of the other duplicates and follow her to watch.
....Or not. He'd stayed behind for a reason after all. And he'd been plenty tempted to go with Danny and Ellie for their vacation, but the other duplicates just really weren't up to the job of being Val's emergency backup in case something went wrong. Some of them would struggle to even let Danny know if something had gone badly wrong, let alone hold down the fort until he could get back.
Shout was different from the other duplicates, he knew it and so did his phamily (heh. Get it? Phamily? Like phantom and family? Ok. So maybe it was overused, but he still thought it was funny). But there was reason for that. Shout was the first long-term stable duplicate Danny had ever made, back when he was first getting started on learning that ability. And Danny had been understandably excited about having this ability. And Shout couldn't blame him. The ability to still manage to get to class while not abandoning the town when it needed help was huge. So he'd created a duplicate with a good chunk of ecto and plenty of intelligence and let him loose on the town and then just kind of...forgot about him. For a bit.
Not entirely of course! Danny had known his duplicate was out there, but the duplicate hadn't been causing any trouble and had been extremely useful to have around. So he just let the duplicate be. For over a month. But after that time Danny had decided to try and do some more practicing on making multiple duplicates. And that would be easier to do with all his ecto instead of having some of it missing. So he'd tracked his duplicate down and absorbed him.
Before promptly panicking. Because that duplicate. That duplicate had been out and about for over a month. Living and learning. And it-he-had developed his own sense of self. His own personhood. He wasn't just a duplicate of Danny anymore. He was his own person. With a name (of sorts) he'd given himself. And Danny had just absorbed him. Practically erased him.
Needless to say Danny had been horrified and immediately began attempting to undo what he had done. Stubborn to a fault, Danny refused to accept that this sort of thing might be irreversible. No. The boy had gritted his teeth and began going through every scrap of his ecto, locating and retrieving every last piece that had once made up the one-duplicate named Shout. It had taken hours. Almost a full day (thankfully Sam, Tucker, and Jazz had been nearby to protect him during this because he hadn't been very aware of the world around him during that time), but finally he managed to collect if not every tiny scrap th,n very close to that. Then he set about shaping that ecto back into a duplicate.
Surprisingly (or perhaps not) it took very little effort to do so. The ecto almost seemed to shape itself back into the desired form. Shout had returned, not exactly the same as he had been before, but very close. Danny had apologized, obviously, but he hadn't needed to explain. Shout had gained Danny's memories (from between his first creation and now) during his time re-absorbed after all. And all was quickly forgiven.
These days Shout continued to live separately from Danny. And Danny made sure that all future duplicates were made of much less ecto, not enough to form even a pseudo-core like Shout's. And they were never left unattended for more than a day or two before they were absorbed. If not by Danny then by Shout (who had figured out how to create minor duplicates as well and gained a bit more ecto to use for such things by absorbing a couple of those minor duplicates as well as the ecto of Amity Park itself).
Shout and Danny didn't interact a whole lot, often taking opposite shifts in heroing with Shout sometimes taking Danny's place in human form or having his own fun in town or in the Zone when it wasn't his shift. They still saw each other often enough though. And consider each other family. Like with Danny and Ellie it could be hard to classify the exact relationship between Danny and Shout, but much like Danny and Ellie eventually settled on Father-Daughter, Danny and Shout eventually decided on brothers (much to Jazz's confused, but enthusiastic excitement).
That's part of why Shout volunteered to stick around Amity Park while Danny and Ellie went on their vacation. Those two deserved some fun Father-Daughter bonding time. Without a strange not-quite brother/uncle tagging along. Plus he was helpful here while Danny was away.
But maybe...just maybe he could manage to take a short break. If he merged a couple of the minor duplicates to make them smart enough to call him if things got bad. That should give him enough downtime to watch Val verbally destroy a couple of rude big-shot heroes. Oh! He could even record it! Val would probably like that. And he kind of wanted to do something nice for her since apparently she'd been paying attention enough to not only notice he was different than the others, but also learn his name.
Yeah. He could do that. Now he just needed to prep what he'd need for that break. Getting a camera for one. Oh! And prepping some more intelligent minor duplicates. He should probably call Danny too. Give him an update....nah. That could wait until he had the video of Val going at the heroes to send along as well.
But it would all have to wait until after patrol. A hero's work was never done after all. Even if he was only doing minor bits of work to help prevent serious injuries or property damage right now.
After enough time, and plenty of visits to the Far Frozen, Shout manages to develop his Pseudo-Core into a Proto-Core, much like the more powerful Liminals of the City.
Now that he has a clearly Defined Core (mostly) He has the ability to generate his own Ecto, and his appearance starts looking more unique when compared to Danny's. I like to imagine that he has Longer Hair, maybe a bit more muscle on him than Danny, and his Freckles are more defined as well.
He starts getting a few somewhat unique powers as well. Shout's ability to make Mini-Duplicates developed even more than Danny's, so now he can make what basically amount to Blob Ghosts that act like Drones for him. He can reabsorb them, see through them, and even influence their actions to a degree. He is really proud that his Newly Developed Powers, and can't wait to show his (Twin? Older?) Brother when he gets back!
Maybe he also gets a more controlled Ghostly Wail? His name is Shout after all. Instead of depowering like Danny does, he can fully control the power and intensity of his Wail, as well as use it in a more varied manner. Echo-Location, Voice Mimicry, Voice Throwing, he has much more control over the power than Danny does (though less power since his Proto-Core is still weak).
The idea of a Duplicate who gets his own Personality and Sense of Self, and is adopted as a New Brother? It's Great! We need to Spread Shout's character even more now, he' so fun!
Ooooh! I’m loving your ideas. Shout definitely deserves to develop a more stable core and get powers of his own.
Him figuring out how to develop his wail into other things really fits his name and I love that. The wail itself is probably weaker than Danny’s. Since it’s one of Danny’s more powerful moves, but Shout’s becomes more versatile. More controlled. You’re so smart for that. Can I use that when I write him?
Im thinking about making a small series that’ll include him and wanna include this prompt in it.
@plotwholls would you be ok if I copied your section and used it word for word in a fic for this idea? I’ll credit you for sure. (If you have an A03 I’ll credit that, if not I’ll credit you from here on tumblr)
Oh, go ahead! And let me know if you need to change something for the plot!! My AO3 is also plotwholls, so it should be easy to find me, but let me know if you can’t!
Thanks!
Now I gotta actually write the thing XD
I only just met Shout, but I would kill everyone in this site and then myself if acting happened to him.
He should have minor shape shifting powers as well. Not like, super big shifting, but smaller things. Changes in skin tone, hair/eye color. Levels of color saturation. Hair length. Still looking a lot like Danny, but Danny if he changed up his looks.
I am here to spread the Pro Shout Vibes because he is so precious and in my head, he's like slightly less mature than his physical age, and maybe a bit more innocent about the world, he is technically only newly formed, and since he was originally a duplicate that was given just enough ecto to think, he probably doesn't have the same memories as Danny, so I feel he'd maybe be a but mentally younger, he new to the world! he totally took Val knowing his name as basically a declaration that they're besties, and he is fully convinced of this, he is adorable sweet heart who was made into this world only a few months ago! A year at most! I am spreading his character because we need more characters that are just nice not traumatic, we need to spread the word of Shout so I can collect more OCs for my collection!
Shout is 20/10 and I love him but if a good chunk of his (main) ghost thing is a) how he was made (duplicates and changing his looks) and b) his name then uhhhh is that why Danny is so powerful and has some mimicry abilities (weather from vortex, developing the wail way before dan did)? He named himself 'ghost' so he can do ghost things? Like if he tried real hard could he just replicate most abilities other ghosts have? Maybe not like Desiree's wishes bc she's a ghost jinn so its a jinn thing not a ghost thing but it would be a cool idea?
Ok after being reminded of this, would Shout technically count as Danny's kid? Since Danny basically took his own ecto, gave it a form, and it developed a core, and I don't know about you but that sounds like it would be similar to how a ghost kid is formed, taking your own ecto and giving enough of it into a form for it to form its own core and mind. So basically: Ellie has a brother because they're both ghosty baby's✨
Wow this gained some traction.
In my mind Danny was Sir Not Appearing in this Film. Setting some basic rules for the ghosts so Amity is still standing when he gets back. Beyond that, have fun guys, let's go Little Comet! (Ellie: :D)
Slight problem with that. Danny always beat the ghosts before they could get situated in Amity let alone travel elsewhere.
The JL and Young Justice haven't heard from Red Huntress in a while, and now with these ghost entities travelling to other cities and causing problems they need her expertise, so they assume something has gone wrong.
They arrive in Amity. It looks like a war zone, Val is covered in plenty of mud 4 other substances. Her suit looks trashed, her hair has the Murder Frizz going.
"WHAT DID YOU DO!?"
"What? Red Huntress are you al-"
"NO. I am NOT ok. I would like an explanation for this!"
Before he left, Danny meticulously wrote a 4000 page contract for the Justice League covering Every. Single. Issue that he has with them. And he's not returning to superheroing until that gets signed.
He has sacrificed his time, his GPA and chances at even graduating high school. His sleep. His relationship with his family. His dream career. Hell he's even been suckered out of having a responsibility free afterlife. All so the JL can call him a Villain? Nah, F that.
That 4000 page contract not only covers his demands as King for repealing the Anti-Ecto laws and the non negotiable public arrests of every single politician and GiW agent, including public apologies and retractions, it also contains the breakdown for wages owed to Danny by the Justice League as a subcontractor.
After all he's been on call 24/7, as a front line fighter while keeping public order(National Guard) , emergency first responder, an Ecto-Scientist, and a variety of other roles. When including danger pay, overtime, increased pay to afford tutors due to superhero commitments causing issues with school and compounding interest. Danny calculated that the Justice League owes him $148 million dollars in back pay and owed wages.
And worst of all?
Danny keeps sending vacation snaps of him and Ellie having fun across Time & Space to Val's phone.
Valerie: phantom gave up his afterlife to protect amity park and this is the thanks he gets?
JL: phantom was a hero that died in the line of duty? Oh no, he deserves to be put to rest!
Valerie: i swear to the ancients if i have to track down phantom because you idiots exorcized my most competent patrol buddy, i will personally deposit him on the watchtower to exact his revenge on you for labelling him a rogue.
Also, what if the jl sees valerie struggling and get the bright idea to summon the ghost king to figure out how to manage the ghosts better? (Instead of, ya know, asking valerie - or even just straight up dismissing her input. Maybe they think she's too jaded and believe they're doing her a favor.)
Im imagining danny has a few options:
1: show up as phantom, watch them squirm while they do the mental calculus on how many orders of magnitude more powerful than them this "b-tier rogue" actually is, and see whether or not they realize that if he actually was the villain, he would have leveled them a dozen times over by now.
2. Show up in an eldritch form that they wont connect to phantom, and when they ask what can be done about the ghost problem, ask if theyve read phantoms 4000 page missive about the situation yet, and not to bother him until theyve gotten things squared away with his embassator. He's not interested in peace talks with parties that cant be bothered to do their research. Its a waste of time and he has too much shit to do. Watch them squirm as they realize that the two-bit rogue was the only one preventing interdimensional war.
3. Refuse the summons, sending a note instead that says something to the effect of "i refuse to step foot on a world that legally denies my sentience. Your problems are not my problems. Get wrecked."
Not a new post, just glad that this person got what I was trying to convey with this prompt

TRAVELING STONEMASON DANNY NIGHTINGALE
he bounces around from universe to universe making graves for the dead and putting them to rest. hes not king in this, he just knows how it feels to be without a place to put his bones
danny, of course, carries his own with him, so he is, essentially, his own grave, and its... unsettling. gives him the ghost version of adhd, makes it impossible to take 'settle down.'
and he could technically solve that with a headstone but... well. graves are supposed to be made FOR you. even if youre paying someone or the government is putting you in an incinerator or whatever else is arranged by your family, its supposed to be a mark of affection, of belonging.
Danny died but nobody noticed. Danny left home and nobody cared. Danny left the UNIVERSE, and nobody looked for him.
they call, yeah, and theyre all friends still, but some part of danny feels so distant. he loves his family. he loves his friends. but sometimes he cant help but wonder how much easier their lives are without him. how much safer. if they ever think back on their wild high school years and feel relief that hes not around to mess things up anymore.
so he keeps moving, long beyond the time it starts to feel like running.
and he carves and carves and carves
An Angela here, a Jeoffery there. A Dua and a Haoyu and a Peter. A Zitkala and an Assol and an Ahsan. A Kleio and a Fabian and a Bluebell and so many more he can't remember them all.
It takes longer than he wishes it had for him to start writing their names down in a little book he tucks close to his heart.
He goes to mass graves that makes his stomach roll and his ears ring from how many voices cry out to him, and spends weeks carving name after name into rocks he digs up and places like sentinels around every sliver of bone.
He goes to cities and engraves plaques and nails them to brick walls.
He finds himself in ruins and plains and icy cracks and the bottom of the sea.
His markers won't last forever, he knows. But they don't need to. The dead are, in many ways, similar to the living. They want to be heard, known, cherished. It doesn't matter if it's for a lifetime or a moment.
Danny can give them that moment. For many, it's enough to settle their clamoring and usher them gently on. So Danny keeps doing it, because it feels good, offering people this measure of peace. It feels good, to help without fighting.
eventually, he makes his way to a city called Gotham. He finds many, many unknown dead there. Restless dead. Violent dead.
He gets to work.

Batman: You let Phantom train the sidekicks?
Black Canary: Yeah, I mean hes an adult, but he's closer in age to them, I figured he would be better at understanding them.
Flash: I mean he is childish, but maybe they'll finally listen to someone.
*opens the training room door*
Phantom, snarling: Is that seriously all you've got? Pathetic! Get back up and try again! Saving the day waits for no "hero"!
*Young Justice scattered across the room, all panting heavily, or cradling bruises as they're each paired up with a Phantom duplicate*
Superman, gobsmacked: Phantom what are you doing?!
Flash: Yeah man this looks a little harsh don't you think?
Phantom: They want to be treated like adults, Flash, so I'm treating them like adults. If they want to be treated like adults, then they can train like adults, work like adult, eat like adults, balance their hero work and their civilian work like adults. I said no slacking! Get back up!
Superman, wincing: Still...
Flash: Dude, what did they say to you to piss you off this much? *tries to joke* I need to know so I don't do the same. Seriously, you're scary.
Phantom: *scowls*
Kid Flash, panting: Pl-Please! Can we take a brake? I need some water.
Phantom: 10 minutes. *all his duplicates vanish and Phantom turns and floats out*
*water bottles appear out of nowhere, and all the sidekicks collapse, desperately chugging the water bottles*
Flash: No, seriously, what did you say to him? I've never seen him that upset before.
Artemis, clutching her ribs: K-Kid Flash s-said he didn't get why-why we couldn't be treated as adults and-and do our own work. R-Rob in Said-Said that Phantom was-ss lucky, cause he didn't have a mentor and took-took care of his territory on his own without help. Said-Said it couldn't be that hard since Phantom did it.
Adult Heros -Batman: *winces*
Superman: No wonder Phantom was so upset.
Green Arrow: Yeah, I'd be pissed too if my years of hard work was chalked up to "not that hard".
Flash: *turns and follows after Phantom*
Batman: Hmn.
Robin: *flinches*
Batman: It looks like Phantom still went easy on you. You should thank him for that.
Kid Flash: That was easy?!
Batman: You're still alive aren't you?
Superman: And by the looks of it, he was only brawling, I don't smell the scent of his Ecto-Blasts.
Black Canary: And he gave you water.
When Danny is fifteen, Dani destabilises.
They did their best to save her.
Their best wasn't enough.
After the grief comes the realisation that Danny is immortal. Oh, he will surely die a second time, but his future as a ghost is pretty much assured.
He will have to bury many more of his loved ones, and very few will follow him to the afterlife.
But some can.
Here is Danny's most well-kept secret: he knows what it takes to make a living being into a ghost at the moment of their death. He has never spoken a word of it to anyone, and he never will.
But it gives him the idea to ask his loved ones if they would follow him to his strange sort of afterlife in death.
(Well. Not all of his loved ones. He knows what his parents' answer would be.)
Tucker and Sam say yes.
They've followed him to the Ghost Zone before, and they see nothing wrong with making a permanent residence there when the time comes. They won't leave him to face eternity alone.
Jazz says no.
It devastates him, but Danny accepts it.
He has to. His method only works on the willing. He doesn't want to think he would force this on anyone, but he is also glad the option isn't there.
He deals with it.
They have decades to live together. Who cares if they don't have forever? His time with her will be no less precious for it.
Except they don't have decades together.
When Danny is on the cusp of his eighteenth birthday, he, his friends, his family and Vlad are caught up in the blast of an explosion. His world detonates around him and he survives it only because he was in Phantom form.
Danny buries his loved ones and the godfather he never wanted.
(Vlad had promised they were one and the same. That if anything, they would survive each other.
He was supposed to be the one that understood. The one that stayed.
Vlad was wrong, and Danny hates him for it.)
He goes after the GIW, who were responsible for the explosion, and makes them regret it. He doesn't go so far as to kill, he knows too well the price of death, but he makes sure they would find death preferable.
Then he waits.
It takes a week for Sam and Tucker's ghosts to form. When it does, Danny disables the portal and leaves Amity Park behind. He takes his best friends with him.
They go to Gotham City, where their obsessions can more easily be fulfilled and the ambient ectoplasm is ideal for newly-formed ghosts.
Sam and Tucker are different now.
It is harder to rein in their impulses. Danny does his best to remind them to be careful around humans.
He buys the three of them a mansion with Vlad's money. It's properly goth and outfitted with the latest technology. It's decently isolated so they don't have to pretend to be human out there.
His best friends are different.
But he marked them for death before tragedy happened and it had the unforeseen side effect of letting them retain more of their identity than any ghost he has previously encountered.
He is glad for it.
They bicker as much as ever.
And they worry for him.
Sam nags him into attending his classes at university, Tucker forces him to make living friends.
When he meets Tim Drake-Wayne and falls in love, they cheer him on.
If he wasn't already half-gone, that boy would be the death of him.
He makes Danny believe life is beautiful again.
But Tim is accident-prone. Every few weeks, he has some sort of injury. Sometimes they are extreme sports-related, sometimes they have to do with the infrequent kidnappings he and his family are subjected to.
Sometimes he is collateral in a rogue attack during one of his family galas.
(Why anyone still organises galas in Gotham is kind of beyond him.)
Sam and Tucker think Tim is hiding something, but they respect Danny's desire to wait and see. He has things to hide too, after all.
But he is starting to want forever with Tim and he does not know if he wants to wait until they trust each other to find out if that is something he can hope for.
So he asks him one quiet evening, where their hands are interlinked and their eyes fixed on the stars in the planetarium Tim bought them tickets to.
"Would you want to live forever if it meant you were no longer human?"
(Tim thinks about Ra's Al Ghul, who has lived centuries and become so twisted he cannot rightly be called human.)
Tim says no.
It hurts, but it is his choice. Danny accepts it.
A day later, he breaks up with him.
Better to save his cracked heart from further shattering.
Tucker philosophises, sitting on Danny's bed. He's been rotting in there for the past few days, skipping class to mope around instead.
"It's like asking your partner if they want kids one day but for half-ghosts, I guess. It's better to know immortality's a dealbreaker now than after you're married."
Sam nods, her glowing purple eyes soft with sympathy. She is floating on top of him, the tip of her combat boot intangibly passing through his elbow.
"You'll find your happily ever after, Danny. I'm sorry, I know you really liked him."
"I loved him," he mumbles, burrowing further into his sheets.
"And I'm sure he loved you too. Unfortunately, sometimes love isn't enough. You have the right to save your heart for someone you won't have to grieve. You've lost enough, Danny."
The halfa sighs.
"Maybe I don't have to grieve him, but I'm losing him anyway. It feels less like self-preservation and more like cowardice."
But he's made his choice, and now he has to live with it.
Tim does not consciously place a bug on the love of his life after the boy breaks his heart.
In fact, he does not realise he has done it until after he returns to the Nest following an impromptu trip to San Francisco during which he tried to drown his sorrows in liquor, enabled by his best friends.
Contrary to popular belief, he does not invade the privacy of every single person he meets and he does not do background checks on his dates in search of possible supervillain ties.
Not without an incentive.
Danny never gave him one.
He had made it clear he had a troubled past, and that there were aspects of himself that he wasn't quite ready to share yet. Tim, who was in the same position and had never been quite so skillful at navigating this type of conversations, had appreciated his frankness and had worked hard to always respect Danny's boundaries.
Until now.
In his defence, doing surveillance on people who display uncharacteristic behaviour has become a kind of professional tic he hasn't quite managed to shake off.
In his line of work, abrupt changes in beahviour in civilians can potentially mean they are being mind controlled, blackmailed, threatened.
There had been no signs.
They were doing well.
So well in fact that Tim had bargained with his dad for several months to be given the chance to share his secret with Danny when time came.
He had it all planned out.
He was going to introduce Danny to his family and slowly build a rapport of trust between them.
Then he would deliberately start showing small aspects of his night life, the behind-the-scenes of Wayne Enterprises' work to better the city.
One thing Tim finds extremely attractive about Danny is his cleverness. He had no doubt the boy would pick up on the clues he was putting down and either connect the dots or ask him directly about it.
Tim thought easing him into it was the best way to do this.
He guesses it is a moot point now, he thinks, staring bleakly at the notification on his computer.
Placing the bug on Danny's bag was a reflex. An unconscious decision stemming from his terrible work-life balance.
Listening in will be a choice.
A deliberate invasion of privacy he will not forgive himself for if it turns out that the break-up he was so blindsided by has nothing to do with his night life.
But he doesn't know if he will be able to live with himself if he doesn't lay that worry to rest.
He listens in.
And he only hears static.
