Me: My theory that Lady was auautistic solidifies -- she hated dogs but loved people.

MY DOG WAS AUAUTISTIC!!!!

Not understanding humour -- She was 100% serious 100% of the time; even playtime was serious business to her, and whenever we were acting silly she'd get annoyed. We know she knew the concept of humour because she was able to tell when we were laughing at her antics and what the sound of laughter meant, and she'd get mad at us for laughing at her (being dignified at all times was very important to her). We're pretty sure she saw us as her very large, very dumb, but very loving packmates who she needed to take care of because if it were up to us to survive, we wouldn't last a week.

Awkward body language -- She often did more catlike things like arching her back during a particularly good petting session.

Sensory issues -- Despite being a water dog breed (poodle) she HATED getting wet. She'd go out of her way to avoid getting her paws wet. As she became a senior, she would ask us to feed her one piece of kibble at a time.

Stimming -- While she hated getting wet, there was one exception: mud puddles. She LOVED splashing her paws in mud (and then we'd go and ruin her good time by washing her paws when we got home, at which point she'd look utterly miserable even though we hade sure the water was a good temperature and it wasn't a full bath).

Strong sense of justice & potentially hyperempathy -- If my mom handed me something (e.g. a glass of water) my dog would demand to get something too (this is similar to one of the ways scientists test for a sense of fairness in animals). But on top of expecting fairness when it came to herself, she also expected it when it came to others, even non-members of her pack. If someone was sitting down and someone leaned over the sitting person too fast, my dog would come running to the defence of the sitting individual, scolding the offender no matter who they might be.
