hey, fruit mom. i need some advice. this may sound silly but i am not talented in any sense (i don't mean this in an insecure way, it's just fact? like. i have tried everything out and it never works, that's all) but i've been into art recently. it used to be a big interest when i was younger and while it's fun i just... can't do it? i can't even create proper figures for practice. where did you start?
hello, friend!! Iâm no expert but Iâll do my best to offer suggestions! recently, Iâve been chatting a lot to artists about how they started out, so I hope this is of some use to you:
try gesture drawing (look it up if youâre unsure)! it requires no details whatsoever, is very quick and just helps you get the general flow and movement of a body onto the paper which makes it less daunting than starting a big piece and getting âart fearâ - quickposes is a good place to start for this!
get messy!!! you have a bunch of highlighters or pencils lying around? just make something. even if itâs ugly, even if you end up hating it, itâs more than you had earlier, and remember every battle you win against art block or self-doubt is more EXP!! YOU CAN DO IT!!
art bases - thereâs a stigma against them, but I think that if youâre learning or just having fun, theyâre a good place to start! if you donât know what an art base is, itâs a pre-drawn base figure that you add your own details to! theyâre great for learning to pose people, if you find yourself drawn to the same poses over and over again and itâs more organic than tracing because you still have to draw most of it!
if you want to draw eyes, DRAW EYES!! who needs a face when you can just draw pretty eyes all day, and the same goes for whatever you feel like drawing. forcing yourself to draw is going to make it a chore for you, so even if you just practice by drawing a small thing everyday, itâll steadily build your confidence!
art videos! I donât mean speedpaints - though they are mesmerizing - I mean the ones with voiceovers (think bob ross), because being able to visualize what youâre about to put to the page is a great foundation for art. some fun art youtubers I recommend are Ross Draws (heâs magical), ABD Illustrates (also incredibly magical), LavenderTowne (lots of great tips for beginners and cute art style!), DrawingWiffWaffles (amazing art videos every week!), Kasey Golden (lots of pretty watercolors) and many, many others! seeing art being created in front of you is both inspiring and gives you a better understanding of how artists like to work!
share your work with people! it doesnât have to be public, if you have a friend - especially an artist friend - itâs always good to get feedback on your art, just to see where you can improve!Â
donât take yourself too seriously, honestly, it might sound cliche but if itâs stressing you out, take a break. you have time to learn and grow and lots of resources to help you, and while everyone says practice makes perfect - practice is only half the fight! you have to have the drive & passion as well! think about why you want to create, is it for you? is it for someone else? whatâs your short-term goal? if you want to learn to draw a good human by the end of the month, make that your goal and donât worry about getting to any level beyond that until later! art is about taking a bunch of steps but some steps are much bigger than others and thatâs okay!Â
I hope that helps!! wishing you the best of luck in all your art endeavours!! <3Â
