For example, we know he's had a dream to go to NCU since he was a young child, but he was going to throw thay away to go to college with Nancy, and then spiralled when he realised he couldn't even do that because he wanted to stay closer to home to support Joyce, Will and El.

For Steve to poke at him and call him a "paranoid, pothead, weirdo" was below the belt, and it showed that he hasn't really grown up at all since school.
