I know we make jokes about the proverbial asexual pervert who has written hundreds of thousands of words of smut on ao3, but also shoutout to the aces who aren’t perverts. to the aces who skip the sex scenes and wince at sex jokes and awkwardly leave the conversation when your friends start talking about sex. your boundaries aren’t childish and fuck anyone who says otherwise.
i think there is something to be said about this wave of white women made media that is so surface level with an underlying racist and/or insensitive bias and that refuses to engage with criticism. i'm talking taylor swift's the life of a showgirl, emerald fennell's wuthering heights, colleen hoover, the acotar series and booktok in general, etc. whenever you dare to raise concerns about the superficiality or the questionable writing or the treatment of poc in those pieces you get shut down with a "it's not that deep" or "let women have fun". this weaponisation of misogyny to justify slop made for mass consumption, especially considering how wide spread it is becoming, scares me quite a bit. to quote princess weekes, "the girlypopification of anti-intellectualism" is truly concerning, and i do believe it is linked to the rise of far right movements worldwide. if you refuse to engage with what you are being presented with, and exclusively consume brain smoothing content "for fun" then yeah you do become more susceptible to propaganda. it is that deep.
to clarify, because a lot of people are taking this post to mean "fuck all silly fluffy media made by women that isn't deep". no. women can, in fact, have silly fluffy fun. they can even have sexy fun. the issue is when that fun infringes on other (non-white, non-cishet, etc) people's fun, and refuses to acknowledge it or learn from it.
my issue isn't women creating un-deep fiction, or even making mistakenly offensive/"problematic" content. the issue arises when they refuse to listen to criticism about it and hide behind "misogyny" to claim that they should be allowed to make anything they want without repercussions.
the same way that "freedom of speech" doesn't mean "say what you want all the time with no consequences", being a woman doesn't mean you can be racist or perpetuate stereotypes without being called out. "but i'm just a girl" mentality is so so lame and is both born from and feeds into patriarchal values.
and yes, men make bad and harmful content all the time, too. they've been doing that. i'm specifically talking about rich white women who benefit from their wealth and whiteness, and hide behind their womanhood to claim impunity. who would rather align themselves with rich white men than poor and/or non-white women, because they profit from that hierarchy.
basically, it's time we created art that kicks a hole into our oppressive social structure, instead of trying to have fun within its confines.
when billy and steve are a bit older and living together, billy has a sure way to get a make out session out of his bf. in the morning he goes to the kitchen before steve, starts making breakfast and right before he hears steve entering the room he rolls up his sleeves, flexes his arm, tootches the booty and flashes him his best shark imitation smile.
