Ok so some of these are actually movies I’ve already recommended under the general umbrella of horror but are also folk horror (or at least can definitely be argued as folk horror! I interpret it as horror rooted in folk tales and the occult / some element of ancient unknowable evil wreaking havoc on modern life):

The Wicker Man (ok so 1. This one is my fav of the British canon of folk horror bc it actually is really very chilling and 2. The score is really good if you also like folk music!!)

The Blair Witch Project (maybe debatable as folk horror and not always classified as such, but imo all the elements are there and it, to me, is the core of the horror within this movie)

Hagazussa (SO fucking bleak, one of the most bleak movies I’ve watched but I love a horror set in medieval Europe)

The Devils (based on an actual historical event where a bout of mass hysteria overtook a convent in medieval France! #1 insane nun horror of my heart)

Picnic at Hanging Rock (eerie, dreamy, and mysterious! Based on a book but I haven’t read it yet)

Sator (this one surprised me, I remember watching it on shudder maybe and expecting just a basic low budget indie but it was really very atmospheric and chilling imo!)

The Wailing (a really well done take on folk horror in a Korean tradition! Also incredibly chilling and atmospheric)

Noroi: The Curse (I know you’ve already seen this one for sure BUT I do feel this is an example of folk horror and it’s such a good movie so just reiterating it here)

The Lair of the White Worm (same director as the devils! Honestly really fun, campy movie imo with really good visuals and an archeological throughline that ties into the folk horror aspect)

The Company of Wolves (recommended this one before but it’s all about legends and folk tales and the horror within them! Also a really perfect example of an 80s dark fantasy film + script is actually written by Angela Carter!)

Haxan :) (kind of the og of folk horror cinema!)

Lastly recommending Woodland Dark and Days Bewitched, which is produced by Kier-La Janisse (who wrote the horror film criticism/memoir House of Psychotic Women!). It’s a really well done and in depth documentary on folk horror and its history in film. Really worth a watch if you enjoy horror and learning about it as a genre!

I’m only a third of the way through, but this book fucking rules so far. It’s basically Rosemary’s Baby but with a willing participant and adapted for the modern age.

The commentary about trad wives and traditional gender roles (that are completely artificial and unattainable btw) is delightfully sharp. I especially love the author touches on how these trad wife influencers and communities have dangerous ideas about health and medical science (at one point the influencer Camille idolizes tells her to not take folic acid while pregnant, an idea so stupid even Camille is taken aback).

Alignment chart of dark academia books, emphasis on the academia. I have read them all and this is my take on it all.

Is the novel a dark academia because it takes place in a school and there are a lot of "dark" themes or is it a dark academia because the atmosphere is grim and the characters are pursuing knowledge.

Also book recommendations, I think people would like the books that fall in the same quadrant.
