big "i let him out on purpose, he needs enrichment" energy
also
a compilation of aglanaxa making their divorce everyones problem <3
aglanaxa is genuinely beautiful and has so many good themes and parallels and those are part of why i ship them but i also ship them because the two most competent people having such petty beef everyone else keeps them apart so things get done is objectively hilarious
This is so basic and general, and also very specific and I fear it's literally me

the escalation trajectory of silt verses antagonists is one of my favourite things about the podcast because at no point can you predict where it's going to go next. like:
season 1: nuanced and reluctant cop at the beginning of his disco elysium arc only instead of alcoholism his vice of choice is LARPing (& it has just as destructive an effect on his life and interpersonal relationships)
season 2: joe many liberals does it take to fund a private genocide campaign led by developmentally arrested child mercenaries 😂😂😂
season 3: What If Humbert Humbert Ran For President?
Something about the inevitable passage of time

DO NOT LET SOCIAL MEDIA TURN YOU INTO AN AMERICAN
As an American: Seriously, please don’t
ok well i don't
"Americanization" is a real phenomenon, and how non-Americans should be cautious of it is taught in different countries at school. It's taught in Greece and people from other countries told me their elementary or middle school teachers (using the American grades, to make it make sense to the majority on the site) talked to them about it.
It's common sense here, except for USians, so I'll analyze it a bit more for the dominant demographic here. In a globalized setting, the most dominant culture affects the others and sets the trends. The way our language works, how we think, our levels of politeness and intimacy, and our levels of respect. (flash news, they are going down 😂)
I don't want to imply that there is nothing good in the US. There are plenty of positives in the country. It's just that for the rest of the cultures online it's a constant daily fight to not forget our roots, with the degree US media and brands have permeated our lives. In Greece at least we watch more US American media than Greek media nowadays, and many of our shows are rip-offs of USian ones, with little adaptation to Greek reality and culture.
And to demonstrate the amount of this exposure, a 22-year-old Greek asked me the other day "if something happens we call 911, right?" This might have literally cost them their life, in a dangerous situation! Because all the movies and songs they consumed (not an unusual thing for the Greek youth) were what they knew. And I found a similar comment in this comment thread.
Lots of Americans in the notes failing to understand this post. It's not about not liking the US. It's not about you feeling ashamed or guilty for being American. It's not about you.
It's about American media drowning out native language media all over the world, and workplaces requiring the English language in your repertoire more and more. It's about proper translations and foreign language dubbing of films disappearing because "everyone speaks/should speak English anyway." All of this is leading to the deterioration of native speaker groups of languages worldwide.
In my country, Dutch language courses can't find enough people who want to study the language, while English language courses are overflowing with people who want to study the language. There is even widespread distaste for the Dutch language for being crude or sounding rough or what have you. That's our native language!!! That is our culture in its purest form!!! That is knowledge we inherit from our parents as they did from theirs!!! That is how we learned fairytales and folk stories and myths!!! That is the language that shapes our communication and our way of thinking!!! To hate your native language is to hate yourself at the deepest level.
And yet it's so normalised. Droves of foreigners living in the Netherlands will never learn a word of Dutch, because "everyone speaks English anyway." We are the world's leaders in non-native understanding of English, but it comes at a cost. A grave cost we will continue to pay.
If you're looking to support your non-American friends in any way that is not performatively shouting "I hate being an American" into the void, first of all, unlearn that hatred of yourself and your culture. You are of no help self-flagellating, and there is a difference between holding your country accountable for its issues, and denying yourself your culture because your country is doing and has done bad things.
(I am not going to get into arguments about whether or not US American culture exists. It does, and if you think differently you are welcome to change your mind.)
Secondly, learn about other countries. Learn a bit of Chinese. Take an interest in the Italian political system. Ask your friends about their countries' folklore. Watch documentaries about art from Nigeria. Absorb information that is not fed to you by American media.
And thirdly, quit expecting your non-American friends to communicate in a way that appeals to you. The French and Dutch will always seem rude to you because our way of communicating is far more direct than the way you communicate. People from other cultures may seem vague to you because their way of communicating is far more indirect, and you're not used to that either. Quit being frustrated when you don't get what we mean exactly. Quit assuming we mean the absolute worst thing you could imagine just because you didn't get what we meant the first time. Ask us to explain if you need us to, and learn to accept that we are different from you.
We are already adapting to your culture 100% of the time we are online. It's your responsibility to adapt to us, too. At least do your friends the courtesy of learning about and adapting to them.
> And yet it's so normalised. Droves of foreigners living in the Netherlands will never learn a word of Dutch, because "everyone speaks English anyway." We are the world's leaders in non-native understanding of English,
i agree but also Dutch are known for not speaking Dutch to people trying to learn it (and many native speakers of other languages as well) at some point we have to look in the mirror and stop speaking English when someone is speaking to us in our language.
Also as a native French speaker (not from France, Belgian which make it even worse because French wasn’t even the native language of my grandparents it was forced on them but moving on), one of the reason why I don’t listen to French dub is because it’s generally shit (and also I always prefer original’s langage of the work I interact with but that’s beside the point), same with the movie. I wish I could but it’s so globally bad that I got tired of trying. And there are only so many bad French comedy one can watch before exploding. I fear this will never stop if we don’t make GOOD stuff. Same with Dutch, I had to learn a bit in school (hated it) and it was such a headache to find anything good, you should share great stuff you make more.
"Dutch are known for not speaking Dutch to people trying to learn it," ... yes because our understanding of English is so good because we've as a nation decided to trade Dutch language media for global integration... and you can learn Dutch without relying on strangers to practice with you. Ask friends, or colleagues, or a romantic partner.
"-one of the reasons why I don't listen to French dub is because it's generally shit-" ... which is the exact problem I'm talking about. Most people speak English, or are content to read subtitles, and so the quality of dubs goes down because the effort spent is not worth it anymore. As a sidenote, your disdain for French-language media is its own issue but ALSO exemplifies my point: you should not be looking at French media as monolithically bad. Or Dutch media, for that matter! There is guaranteed to be media in your native language that is appealing to you: it's just mildly inconvenient for you to look for it, and so you prefer to write it off and just watch English media.
I wasn’t mainly talking about strangers (but yes I kind of am because why should people only rely to friends, partners, colleagues ? Those people most likely don’t know the target language. If you want your language to shine you as much as you want we have to talk our language with learners) but more adding to your point in a way that we aren’t passive in this, I don’t see why you double down on the passivity. We can be actor, we have to be actor and act as a community. I would never want to interact with a language if the native people only let me explore their language if we become big friends (how ? Through English ? That sound quite ironical don’t you think ? Practicing with fellow non native also destroy the sharing of the culture)
It’s not middly inconvenient for me to find it in French, it’s nearly impossible to do it (it’s already rare in English : good quality queer rep, good quality bardcore song, fanfiction that aren’t English translation… to give you an idea I’m the kind of person that will go so far as to use Google Translate to read fanfiction in Chinese, I’m not picky in my book if it’s queer and historical no matter the origine of the language I can read it even when Google Translate was dog shit. But that’s beside the point, I was talking in general. Only now did dub become half decent in more instance, the distrust still stand and only a few brand generally pull it off beautifully). Do not assume people are not looking, don’t assume people didn’t try and don’t assume people answering to you are always attacking you, I wasn’t. I was not, I was adding to the discussion. I also didn’t say French media is a monolith, there are many show I love that are French and I love to share them, yet the truth is that it’s still hard to find good stuff (and stuff that are not France-centered but that’s another thing completely).
Actually the I hated it was an argument in itself, it’s not a dig at your language, since I didn’t say ‘it’s ugly asf’ which I could have (I don’t think it’s btw), it’s to strengthen the argument: I hated it [the forced learning of that language] and there was no media, no culture,… I could find that I liked (it was a long time ago, it may have changed now) that could have make me connect with it. How can people love something if they can’t never interact with it in a positive light ? How can people love stuff if you don’t want to talk with strangers in your own language? But I guess you can interpret that as a dig still if you want.
You are absolutely exhausting as an individual.
a PSA for anyone who is confused by the panic over the UK heatwaves! ☀️
the UK has an amber warning declared for a heatwave this weekend, where temperatures will reach above 30C (86F). to many, especially Americans, this doesn't seem like a notable temperature, and i've seen many ignorant posts mocking UK residents who are worried about how they and their loved ones will be affected by the temperatures. i'd like to explain why heatwaves in the UK are different than other parts of the world, and why they cause such a panic: 🔥 because we are an island nation, our heat isn't dry: it's horrendously humid. high humidity means that your lungs need to work harder to breathe, and it's much harder for your sweat to evaporate in the air. sweating is how your body regulates its temperature, and you sweat more in humid environments. when sweat doesn't evaporate it remains on the skin, leaving you feeling hot, sticky, and ill. 🔥 our homes and buildings are built to retain heat. because the UK is so cold and rainy for the vast majority of the year, our homes are supposed to trap heat, not let it out. not only are our homes smaller on average, but between double glazing, cavity wall insulation and loft insulation, when heat hits a British home, it causes a greenhouse effect. heat just sits in our homes, and it doesn't dissipate at night, meaning we are unable to sleep. 🔥 we have no air conditioning. i have never been in a home with air-con, and very few public buildings have it (except some shops). because of the aforementioned cold, rainy conditions that affect the UK for the vast majority of the year, air-con has never received a significant roll-out here. this means that we have little to no relief from being inside buildings besides being in the shade, and few homes even have fans. 🔥 our city centres are packed and highly urbanised, which causes heat traps. because our streets and homes are often stacked tightly together, including rows of houses/buildings/etc., heat in densely packed areas has nowhere to go, and will simply sit. trying to walk through a city during a heatwave will leave you sweating and exhausted in minutes. likewise, there are limited spaces to go to cool off during these temperatures: people will literally go to the shops to stand in the fridge/freezer aisles. 🔥 our infrastructure is not built to cope with heat. during heatwaves, our tarmac melts. the rails which hold our trains bend and warp. our grass catches fire. a few years ago, airport runways cracked and lifted in the heat, halting flights. the UK is brought to a standstill during high temperatures because our cities and towns are built for colder, wetter temperatures. add in the 16 hours of daylight we get during the summer, and you have a recipe for disaster. 🔥 the hottest temperature ever recorded in the UK is 40C (104F). this was in England, and in other UK countries, it's even lower: in Wales, it was 37.1C (98.78F); in Scotland, it was 34.8C (94.64F), and in Northern Ireland, it was 31.3C (88.3F). because these are our highest temperatures, many of us are unused to the symptoms which signify heat exhaustion or heat stroke. i need to emphasise: people die during heatwaves. i highly encourage people to read about the 2022 UK heatwaves, which saw the deaths of nearly 3000 people (many of whom were elderly). we could do nothing but hunker down and survive the heat during this time, and it was especially dreadful for anyone who is older, disabled, and/or neurodivergent. so while 30C is not unheard of in the UK, any heatwave poses significant risks, including illness, disruption to transport, wildfires, and even death. thanks for reading, and to everyone from outside the UK who's provided useful advice on keeping cool! i'm sure we'll be alright, but i'm hoping folks won't parrot misinformation about us just 'not being able to cope with the heat' 💔
it's that special time of year where a heatwave is hitting the UK and mockery/misinformation spreads like wildfire from people who don't live here. so just some reminders for those unfamiliar with how UK heat can be deadly 💖
being a horror fan will have you saying sentences such as “i liked it a lot, super gross and sad”
