after a while i became convinced that the words were mocking me
Nothing happened.Ā
I WAS PROMISED A BATTLE

Edit: Went back. This is the best thing to happen to my dashboard ever.
Reblogging again because my followers need to see this. To be clear, rebog, go to your actual blog, then click the picture.Ā
i love that post thats like ānever trust how you feel about your life after 9pmā that shit changed my life. every time i feel bad i look at the clock and iām like Aha Itās 10:26 PM You Cannot Fucking Fool Me
wow this post bload up. i think itās a good time for me to clarify some things since i really did just write this post at 10:26 pm on a whim
Thereās about ten thousand people tagging this with ābut what if i feel bad in the morningsā or āwelp i feel like shit in the afternoonā and I think youāre willfully misinterpreting this post for many reasons.
First off, this post is about knowing when to let yourself rest. Anxieties are stronger at the time when you meditate on your day and the events of your world slow down. (A lot of people have different sleep schedules, too, so ā9 PMā can mean whenever your day is over and before you go to sleep.)
I donāt ignore these anxieties, I do take them in but just remind myself that I am resting now. Itās a mindfulness technique. I look at the clock to ground myself about where and when I am and what physical state Iām in as it relates to my mental state. Itās a reminder to myself that I feel these emotions and they do not control my actions. I do not need to do anything about them. Right now, I am at rest. You canāt fool me into taking action on things when I am at rest. I see a lot of funny tags on this saying āmental business hours are from 9 AM to 8:59 PMā and I LOVE that.
Secondly, this advice is geared towards the idea that your mental state is for the most part dependent on your physical state. In this specific case, I felt bad because the day was ending and my mind and body were tired. I was ready for bed. My body needed sleep and my mind deprived of it started acting up. But your body doesnāt need only sleep. Your mental state can depend on whether or not youāve eaten something substantial, drank water, taken your medicine, gone to the bathroom, exercised, showered or bathed, brushed your teeth, breathed fresh air⦠and to go on: had an orgasm, changed into clean clothes recently, been properly cool or warm, or given someone a hug. These things are not linked to a time of day, these are round-the-clock concerns. If you feel bad and havenāt done many of these things recently, I really recommend you take your negative feelings with a grain of salt and see how you feel after youāve improved your physical state.
Thirdly, this post is also predicated on the idea that you should worry about things when you can control them. For me, 9 PM is when everything shuts down. My energy is pretty sapped, as is my friendsā energy, stores are mostly closed, nobody answers phones, most of my immediate world is done for the night. I canāt start anything at 9 PM. Right now, Iām worried about getting a job. I feel bad at all times of day that I donāt have a job yet. But I canāt be worried about applying for jobs at 10:26 PM, Iām tired and no hiring managers are going to see my applications before 9 AM tomorrow. I canāt improve my life while lying in bed, and I need to lie in bed, so Iām going to improve my life when my day starts. I deserve rest, I need sleep, and I observe but neatly package and set aside the worry to be dealt with at 9 AM tomorrow.
It seems like platitudinous boomer-level āmust be nice to be neurotypicalā COMPLETE BULLSHIT to a lot of you, I know. But hereās my secret: you donāt need to believe it. You just need to tell yourself thatās how it is. With practice ā and I say practice because this kind of thinking took me years (and growing out of being a teenager) to cultivate ā it stops being platitudinous.
And if youāre sitting here thinking Iām lying or that Iām not REALLY mentally ill, Iād like to remind you that A) you know nothing about me and my life B) assuming I donāt know what Iām talking about is both silly and incredibly cruel and C) thatās your own self-sabotage talking. āOh, she feels better by doing this. Well, she must not be As Bad As Me. Therefore this will not work on me.ā That is the Devil speaking, the one who tells you not to brush your teeth at night and to text your ex. That is the demon in your head that likes watching you hurt. You donāt want to hurt. Even if you do want to hurt, I promise, you do not want to hurt.
Itās true that this will not work for many, many people. Not everyoneās brains work the same. We are all unique people with unique situations and for me to even pretend otherwise would be preposterous. And Iām not going to pretend that every worry you have is unfounded and can be solved with a nap and a sandwich. Thatās not what this post is about. Youāre allowed to feel bad. Itās an emotion. It happens. But itās healthy for you to ask yourself why youāre feeling a negative emotion, if it is possible to fix why you are feeling that way, what you can do to fix it, and whether or not right now is the time to fix it.
When itās 10:26 PM and Iām angry at myself about losing an online chess game and being unemployed, I look at the clock and say⦠this negative emotion is real but the reasoning behind it is not something I can fix right now. I canāt fix my life right now. I need to go to bed, and my brain canāt Fucking Fool Me.
Iām giving you this advice because I want you to SEE if it helps. Even if you try it and this mindset is not what is right for you⦠Iām proud of you and impressed of you for trying it, because trying to get better is the first step to getting better.
(And thanks to people who reminded me that Drew Monson is the one responsible for the original post about not trusting how you feel about your life after 9 PM. Thank you Drew for helping me out of some late-night pits.)
[ Image Description: Flow chart. Starts with "Do you have a problem?" The "No" path points to "Then don't worry." The "Yes" path points to "Can you do something about it?" From there, both the "Yes" and the "No" paths point back to "Then don't worry." Description Ends ]

when i was 12 i babysat this girl for a few years and she would come to me and show me her art, drag me by my wrists and point at the pieces sheād made during the week. and sheād be likeĀ ādo the voiceā and iād put on a sports-announcer olympics-style voice and be likeĀ āsuch form! this level of coloring! why i havenāt seen such perfection in crayola in a long time. and what is this? why jeff, now this is a true risk⦠it seems sheās made ⦠a monochrome pink canvasā¦. i havenāt seen this attempted since winter 1932⦠and i gotta say, jeff, itās absolutely splendidā Ā and sheād fall back giggling. at the end of every night sheād check with me:Ā ādid you really like it?ā and iād say yes and talk about something i noticed and tucked her in.
she was just accepted into 3 major art schools. she wrote me a letter. inside was a picture from when she was younger. monochrome pink.Ā
āthank you,ā it said,Ā āto somebody who saw the best in me.ā
DIVORCE HIM
Our society has a number of loveable buffoons who fool around and are excused from acting like prats because theyāre funny. They might be rubbish at most things but as long as their banter is flowing, we put up with it.
These types are almost exclusively men. You donāt get hilarious, idiotic women being lorded as icons of our culture. Diane Abbott is dismissed as a cretin while Boris Johnson is a joker.
Which begs the question: is conscious male incompetence a form of misogyny?
If you labour the point that you canāt cook, then chances are that you wonāt be made to cook. If you make a hash out of doing the laundry or hoovering, youāre forcing someone else to take over.
Few have the patience to watch someone do a job badly over and over again and so often, theyāll just take it upon themselves to do your chores as well as their own. Emotional labour is doubled when youāve got an incompetent clown on your hands.
I was recently listening Semi Circles, a BBC radio comedy starring Paula Wilcox, first broadcast in 1989.
Itās about a housewife who recently wakes up to the fact that sheās spent the past eight years being a slave to her kids and nice-but-emotionally-dim husband.
Part of this awakening is the realisation that she does all the housework because her husband is crap at it. Left alone, he makes inedible food. He lets the kids stay up well beyond their bedtime. He leaves the house a tip.Ā
He doesnāt even try to do a good job because he fears that if heās too good at these jobs, his wife will make him do more of them.

Put these garbage men in the garbage where they belong.
I went and checked the original source and itās worse. While most of the comments get the problem (the lying, not the eggs) some of them just cannot see that this shit is actually a big honking warning sign for bigger shit. A loving person is not capable of doing this.Ā
He literally puts his mere convenience over her actual well being. This guy thought up and executed a plan where she has to do *all* the work (because of course it wasnāt just this one specific thing) while he watches her tire herself out from the sidelines. Imagine this going on for *years*. ā¦now imagine this with kids. You think this guy cares if she gets off during sex? Would he take care of her if she were to get sick? Would he ever lift a finger if he could get away not doing it?Ā
She canāt trust a word he says and he doesnāt give a shit about her needs. Itās not about the *eggs*.
hey remember how awhile back i mentioned that tiktok has a whole trend where people mix cleaning supplies well i redownloaded tiktok so im finally able to show you what i mean
I put my bare hands in this sink and get a chemical burn so bad it oozes and bubbles nonstop for days
i have GREAT news for you
potion of cough up blood
people are so fucking stupid oh my god
Cleaning TikTok: Weāve mixed the perfect cleaning solution!Ā
Everyone Else: Youāve created mustard gas is what youāve done. Your lungs look like youāve just returned from the Western Front.Ā
Jesus fucking christ. One time I accidentally mixed an ammonia scrub and a bleach spray and gave myself a migraine in 15 minutes how the fuck are they even still standing.
Time for a health and safety lesson.
See below for a chart on what household cleaners to NEVER EVER MIX EVER OR YOU CAN (AND WILL PROBABLY) DIE OR OTHERWISE BECOME EXTREMELY FUCKED UP AND NOT IN A FUN WAY BUT IN THE HOSPITAL AND/OR GRAVEYARD WAY:
The above is not a complete list, but these are extremely common in most households and therefore are the most likely chemical fuck-ups to occur.Ā
DO NOT MIX HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS.Ā
DO NOT MIX CLEANING AGENTS.
DO NOT MIX CERTAIN ASTRINGENTS. (HYDROGEN PEROXIDE IS OFTEN IN FIRST AID KITS OR WOUND SPRAYS AND CAN CAUSE A REACTION IN SMALL AMOUNTS IF MIXED WITH THINGS IT SHOULD NOT BE MIXED WITH EVEN ACCIDENTALLY ON A SURFACE ETC.)Ā
DO NOT MIX ANY CHEMICALS THAT YOU ARE NOT 100% SURE ARE SAFE TO MIX. (SPOILER: MOST THINGS ARE NOT REALLY SAFE TO MIX AND SOMETIMES COMBINING SAFE ONES ACTUALLY MAKES THEM LESS EFFECTIVE ANYWAY, SO JUST DONāT COMBINE THIS KIND OF SHIT!)Ā
YOU ARE PROBABLY NOT A CHEMIST. PLEASE DO NOT TURN YOUR KITCHEN/BATHROOM/HOME INTO A LAB ACCIDENT.Ā
IF YOU ARE A CHEMIST, YOU SHOULD STILL NOT FUCK AROUND. MANY OF YOU DO NOT RELIABLY USE YOUR SAFETY GOGGLES OR THE CORRECT TYPE OF SAFETY GOGGLES. (IF YOUāRE THE TYPE OF CHEMIST WHO DOESNāT ENSURE ADEQUATE VENTILATION IN YOUR WORK AREA, I WILL NOT TRUST YOU WITH BLEACH. COMPLACENCY KILLS.)Ā
CONCLUSION: STOP MIXING CHEMICALS!Ā
YOU ARE NOT PROFESSOR X, AND YOU WILL NOT END UP CREATING THE POWERPUFF GIRLS.Ā
YOU WILL ONLY CREATE A NEW INVOICE FOR YOUR LOCAL FUNERAL HOME.Ā
I AM YELLING AT YOU BECAUSE I LOVE YOU AND WANT YOU TO BE SAFE.
TO ANY DUMBASS TEENAGERS OUT THERE, I WANT YOU TO SURVIVE LONG ENOUGH TO BECOME DUMBASS ADULTS.Ā
PLEASE DO NOT DIE.
The fumes from this vid burned all the hair off my body, melted my skin, and then killed me t.f
Hey, this actually very useful information to have if you are a kid or otherwise donāt know.
I feel like theĀ āmay cause deathā part on that chart needs to be majorly bigger. The descriptions of the first two sound like theyād be unpleasant, but āunpleasantā doesnāt cut it. Needs to have a way biggerĀ āTHIS IS HOW THEY KILLED PEOPLE IN WARS BEFORE IT WAS OUTLAWEDā warning.Ā

Spoke to a gen z person the other night and apparently the young folks don't know about the very legal sites from which you can access public domain media (including Dracula, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and other Victorian gothic horror stories)?
Like this young person didn't even know about goddamn Gutenberg which is a SHAME. I linked to it and they went "aw yiss time to do a theft" and I was like "I mean yo ho ho and all that, sure, but. you know gutenberg is entirely legal, right?"
Anyway I'm gonna put this in a few Choice Tags (sorry dracula fans I DID mention it though so it's fair game) and then put some Cool Links in a reblog so this post will still show UP in said tags lmao.
Spreading the news to my followers - if you werenāt aware of this before, hereās the link to Project Gutenberg - https://www.gutenberg.org/
Project Gutenberg is a gigantic collection of books that are in the public domain.Ā You can read the books through the site or you can download them in various formats so you can get the format you prefer for your eReader of choice.
It is free.Ā
It is legal.
I was reviewing the list of the top 100 books downloaded yesterday and I saw a fair few that I had to read for college classes - so if youāre a college student and your professor assigns you to read Plato or any number of older works, check here before you buy a copy.
I reread the Anne series several years back - they were free through this.Ā I need to reread Pride and Prejudice at least once a year, and my e-book version is from this.Ā Someone recommended Jekyll and Hyde to me a few weeks back and I got a free copy from this.Ā When I went to Haworth on my last holiday before the plague times, I brought books by the Bronte sisters with me to read or reread that I downloaded from here.Ā Itās a great resource.
Yes yes yes! I was honestly so flabbergasted that this young person hadn't heard of the gutenberg project! It's been around for AGES, maybe longer than the kindle has? And it's such a huge project and wonderful resource! It used to be a household name (or maybe that's just my family, thanks to my dad being a cheapskate nerd [affectionate]). I was so glad to be able to share this resource and others with them though, and I wanted to make sure no one else was missing out!
If you look at the first reblog from me I also recommended a few other resources, most of which were from www.archive.org, home of the Wayback Machine! They run openlibrary.org, where you can check out ebooks of some public domain titles! They even have the Bone series by Jeff Smith!
And archive.org itself has all kinds of public domain media including music and movies! For Dracula fans, here's a radio show adaptation of the book, starring Orson Welles! And here's a 1920 movie adaptation of "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," starring John Barrymore, the grandfather of Drew Barrymore!
I'm so excited to see people falling in love with classic media through Dracula Daily! Let's keep that fire blazing!
OH MY GOD whyyyy did no one tell me youāre supposed to send thank-yous after interviews?? Why would I do that???
āThank you for this incredibly stressful 30 minutes that I have had to re-structure my entire day around and which will give me anxiety poos for the next 24 hours.ā
I HATE ETIQUETTE ITāS THE MOST IMPOSSIBLE THING FOR ME TO LEARN WITHOUT SOMEONE DIRECTLY TELLING ME THIS SHIT
NO ONE TOLD YOU???? WTF! I HAVE FAILED YOU. Also: Dear ______: Thank you so much for the opportunity to sit down with you (&________) to discuss the [insert job position]. I am grateful to be considered for the position. I think I will be a great fit at [company name], especially given my experience in __________. [insert possible reference to something you talked about, something that excited you.] I look forward to hearing from you [and if you are feeling super confident: and working together in the future]. Sincerely, @mellivorinae
THIS IS A LIFESAVING TEMPLATE
YOU ARE WELCOME
My brother got a really great paid internship one summer. The guy who hired him said the deciding factor was the professional thank you letter my brother sent after the interview.
should it be an email? or like a physical letter?
email, you want to send it within a few hours at max after the interview if you can so itās fresh in their mind who you are.Ā
Confirmed! I interviewed for a job right after arriving in NY. The interview went incredibly well, and I went home and immediately wrote a thank you letter and put it in the mail. I had a super good feeling about this interview.
I didnāt get the job.
However, a few weeks later, I was called in to interview with another editor in the same company, and I did get that job. I found out later from the initial editor (the one who didnāt hire me) that he had planned to offer me the job, but since I didnāt follow up with a thank you letter, he assumed I didnāt really want it. He offered the job to another contenderābut when he got my letter in the mail shortly after the offer had already been made, he went to HR and gave me a glowing recommendation. It was based on that recommendation that I got called in for the second interview.
So: send an email thank you immediately (same day!) after the interview. If youāre feeling extra, go ahead and send a written one too. OR go immediately to a coffee shop, write the letter, and return to the office and give it to the secretary.
Either way, those letters are important.
Pro tip: If you really want HR to develop a personal interest in your application, publicly thank them on linkedin. Just make a short post telling your network about how X recruiter really went above and beyond to make you feel welcome, or about how be accommodating and professional they were, or whatever. Make sure to use the mention feature so theyāll get a notification and see it.Ā
Flattery will get you everywhere⦠and public flattery that might make its way back to their manager, doubly so.
Obligatory plug for one of FreePrintable.netās sites: ThankYouLetter.ws. They have a whole section with interview thank you letter templates, and a page with specific tips for interview thank you letters. (There are also tons of other letter templates if you browse around a bit.)
As a former professional recruiter and recruiting manager, I confirm, especially for entry-level positions, where you are competing with oodles of people. This little thing can make a difference. Also the fact that, maybe, you took time to google the āinterview etiquetteā.
SIGNAL BOOST
The post-interview thank you notes can be a good way to recover in case you got asked a question whose answer you either didnāt know or felt was super weak. So if you follow the above given template, jump in with something likeĀ āupon further thought to your question, hereās my revised answer.āĀ
But yeah always send a thank you note after an interview. Itās a small thing but it makes a hell of a difference. And def send thank you messages to any recruiters who may have helped. And also after you get the job. Small things like that really go a long long way.
GO READ ASK A MANAGER RIGHT NOW.
AAM is an AMAZING resource for all work-related questions. This is a good starting placeābasically the Big Questions people tend to have. (And some weirdness.) Job searching, negotiating for raises, performance issues, living through toxicity, recognizingĀ toxic situations,Ā dealing with coworkers, managing people, helpful starting-point scripts for all of the above⦠Do yourself a favor and check it out!
JFC no one ever told me any of this!!!!
