I think one of the base things that a prequel or a sequel needs to do in order to be an improvement upon the original work is that it needs to make you never view the original in the same light again. everything needs to be recontextualized, not just continued. that’s why I think the ballad of songbirds and snakes and sunrise on the reaping are very effective at what they do because i’m re-watching the movies after reading both books and now they’re a wholly different experience
