Visibly trans people in customer facing retail and food services are braver than any marine and provide a far greater service to society
At some point in your life, you were taught that being slightly annoying is an unforgivable sin. Maybe it was by your parents or a teacher or a friend or a bully or an older sibling. But someone taught you that being slightly annoying is a crime punishable by death.
You must unlearn this.
You must accept that all people will be annoying at some point or another in their lives, maybe all of their lives, and that this is okay. It is okay for strangers on the bus, it is okay for children in the grocery store, it is okay for people on social media, and it is okay for you.
If you ever want to truly love your fellow humans, if you ever want to truly love yourself, you must have forgiveness for being annoying.

i am not joking we need to force teach cooking in schools. like. it is an essential thing for survival. do you know how easy it is to make things if you know even the bare bones shit about how cooking works. we need to teach teenagers how far you can take an onion and some other veggies itââs sad that people grow up not knowing how to prepare literally anything. and iâm not talking about oh this home ed class taught me how to make chicken nuggets at home iâm talking about learning the balancing of sweetness and acidity and saltiness and bitterness and shit like that and techniques and oil temperatures and how meats cook. it needs to be taught because itâs literally not even that difficult and it matters so much
i truly believe that knowing how to cook is a basic survival concept and the fact that so many people canât even make simple dishes is depressing as hell this is the sorta thing that should be taught at a young age. being able to take the ingredients you have around your home and turn them into a meal is like, essential and will make life so much better. you donât need to be a high end chef you just need to understand some things that can be easily taught⌠but then again maybe the education system is playing a roll against this and ultimately they want you to grow up to rely on mcdonalds for dinner. i donât know. please learn how to cook for yourself if youâre able. iâm not asking you to hunt for specific ingredients to make some expensive youtuberâs âbestâ recipe but if you know the basics of cooking you can do a lot with cheap canned ingredients. cooking can be affordable i promise you just need to learn how to make do with what you can get
Can anyone point me towards resources that teach those basics cus I would LOVE to teach my child this stuff but i dont know how to cook
not comprehensive but heres some:
internet shaquilleâs basics but especially:
making rice
making scrambled eggs
making oatmeal
levels of cooking meat
using & storing vegetables with recipes in the description (this one has a bit of Sassiness directed at people who dont like vegetables but the content is solid)
food safety + a recipe to demonstrate
how to learn to cook (just a list of subtopics, no actual tips)
cooking techniques playlist
how to cut x
basics with babish s1 & 2, but particularly:
freezer meals,
weeknight meals,
kitchen tools (although the specific suggestions are pretty expensive even with the lower end scale items the basic categories are solid, and you can evaluate what items you will realistcially need - eg. if you dont need to read temp for steaks etc the temp reader will not be relevant) &
kitchen care (mid-high advanced home cooking)
basic knife skills
picking the right pan for each recipe
j. kenji lopez-altâs tips and tricks playlist
egg recipes
a little more complicated, involved, and longer than any of the rest of these but good breakdown of flavor & how and why to use the basic seasoning/flavor profiles
and then recipe channels representing various cuisines:
j. kenji lopez-alt (various)
marionâs kitchen (southeast & east asian, western/asian fusion)
maangchi (korean)
future neighbor (mostly korean)
the western supermarket playlist of chinese cooking demystified (more recipes available but these are accessible if you dont have âspecialtyâ ingredients)
family recipes playlist by made with lau (chinese)
not another cooking show (various)
cooking with boris (bear with me here i know he does it exaggeratedly humorously but a lot of them are actually solid and beginner cook friendly. mostly slavic/russian)
you suck at cooking (also falls into the intentionally humorous category but most of the recipes are pretty solid anyway)
how to cook that (baking, also does debunking videos of viral cooking hacks - breaks down the reasons the hacks dont work, pretty important to understand those basics imo)
internet shaquille (various)
babish culinary universe (various)
i REFUSE to recommended joshua weissman because he is fucking insufferable but if you want you can try if you can deal with it, the techniques/recipes seem fine for the most part
again definitely not a comprehensive list but it touches on most of the basics

My mom just sent me this picture of my dogâŚI guess we got a lot of snow, then
update:
Great update
making art is literally actually like doing an exorcism u have to get it out of ur brain. u have to
i almost scrolled past but then i remembered the time I woke up at 3:30 in the morning with a scene in my head and couldn't go back to bed until it was on paper and out of my head.
i feel like this thing where people are going stir-crazy and want something to do less than a week after being explicitly ordered to stay home under threat of disease and death kind of blows a hole in that âif we give people universal basic income everybody will just be lazy and wonât want to workâ talking point
The number of artists, writers and musicians dumping output for free to cheer us up is right there in the âpeople will do productive things because the things need to be doneâ department.
Shoutout to the all queer family heroes
wow this actually makes me feel really happy cause that person is meâŚ
It me
I have to tell this story.
I thought I was the first person to come out on either side of my family, but like three years after I came out, my mom was like, âBy the way, my Aunt Mildred was a lesbian.â
âWhat? Really?â
âYeah. My mom just told me this story the other day about her. She also had really bad depression, so bad that she was hospitalized. Her father flew out to San Diego to see her there. The nurses caught him on the way in and told him the no matter what she said, he was not allowed to get upset.â (This is the Catholic side of the family. Like, serious Irish Catholic with eleven kids and multiple priests in the family. Also super-duper Southern. And this was the 1940s and it was illegal.) âAnd he got real scared, but he went in. And she said, âDaddy, Iâm a lesbian.â He threw his hands in the air and hollered, âOH THANK GOD! I was worried it was gonna be something bad.ââ
So. Shoutout to my Great Aunt Mildred, because she got there before I did.
Further shoutout to my second cousin Jared, who thought he was the first in even the extended family until he turned up for Grannyâs 90th birthday, saw me for the first time in probably fifteen years, and heard me utter the words, âMy wifeâŚâ
General shoutout to anybody who even thought they were the first in their family when they came out, even if they found out differently later on.
Y'know what, I love this story so fucking much that Iâm going to schedule it to reblog when people will see it.
shoutout to those nurses who were ready to throw the fuck down for their young depressed lesbian patient like⌠when we talk about allies that is actually the kind of ally that has helped us to survive. in the most literal sense.
Absolutely shoutout to Aunt Mildredâs Nurses. That was some Good Allyship.

I actually wouldnât mind people coming back to tumblr, I think an increase in activity could be fun. I think it would be fucking hilarious if people tried to introduce 2021s influencer culture on here. you would literally get eaten alive
possibly controversial opinion: i think ânaturalâ makeup is, over time, more damaging than bold, obvious makeup
I donât think thatâs controversial at all.Â
@qualr sure Iâll explain :-)
Mainly because makeup itself, the generic concept, is an integral part of human identity. People have always done it (even Neanderthals used makeup) and weâre always going to keep doing it. The concept of decorating our faces/bodies with colored pigments is practically hardwired and on a deep level just plain FUN (look at how much kids love to get their faces painted at fairs and carnivals and so on). The concept is also totally gender neutral. In some societies, men traditionally do it more than women, for example. Using your own body as a canvas for art taps into a mystical, childlike sense of wonder. First you look one way, then⌠another! Like magic.Â
But mainstream commercial makeup culture as it exists today is incredibly exploitative, misogynist, colonialist, colorist, and hurts women, especially poorer women and women who donât fit the racial ideal as expressed by the mainstream corporate beauty industry. And a big part of that is pushing ânaturalâ looks. All women are supposed to look ânaturallyâ poreless, for example (which isnât realistic or healthy) and are punished socially and often financially if we arenât. Another example: contouring is supposed to accentuate the ânaturalâ lines of your face but for me and a lot of other Asian women with moonfaces, itâs the furthest thing from natural! The further you are from the rich thin young lightskinned bigeyed straightsmallnosed highcheekboned look, the more weirdly artificial the word ânaturalâ becomes. Weâre supposed to sink all this time and money and resources into achieving this bullshit ânaturalâ look until it all feels a bit like Sisyphus rolling the stone up the hill.Â
Putting a bright blue streak on your eyelids and walking out the door might take five seconds and probably makes you feel expressive and happy and good about yourself, even if it seems âtackyâ through the lens of mainstream makeup culture. But taking an hour and trying soooo hard, using all the latest expensive products to make it seem like youâre not really trying at all, makes a lot of women feel worse about themselves, not better. In fact it leads to a lot of women feeling insecure about their real face and their real skin. There are many ways to look garish, but only ONE way to look ânaturalâ. Instead of turning your own face into a canvas where youâre the creative artist, youâre following a ruthless set of instructions and doing a sort of strict paint-by-numbers that youâre never going to do right anyway. So it represents giving up more power over your own face/body than youâre actually getting back. Subjugation to the social norm, not creativity.
Queer is such a good word, I love it so much. I love being queer, I love being around other queer people, I love queerness in general it's all wonderful.
