I think the "trans men are men" "trans women are women" mantra will inherently fail trans liberation because it's only there to make cis people confortable. It leaves out all the gender diverse people, all the intersex, and non binary people. It doesn't do shit for us

also I don't think parents "these days" are uniquely terrible, I just think neglect is showing up in new ways as technology progresses. today's ipad kid would've been wandering around in a ditch alone all day and night before. parents not wanting to have to deal with children is not a new phenomenon.

Parenting styles are always a direct reaction to how the parents were raised. I think so many Millennials faced casual abuse at the hands of teachers, coaches, and other authority figures that now there is a general distrust of these people in regards to our children. So many of us wanted so badly to be heard and believed that now we are willing to believe children over the adults in charge of them. This, coupled with the virulent anti-intellectualism of the Trump era, has been detrimental to schools and the profession of teaching. But it's not something "new" in the grand scheme of things. It isn't due to some inherent weakness or moral flaw on the part of millennial parents. It's simply part of the cycle we as humans have always been struggling in.

Oh it absolutely is. Boomers had were raised by the very etiquette heavy Greatest/Lost Generation. Their whole thing before hanging on to political power for way too long was inventing the modern concept of the teenager and a general dissolution of overt social norms. You know they're the people who stopped wearing hats etc. So they neglected Gen X. Gen X was neglected, so they become helicopter parents. Then general smothering Millennials experienced is responded to with permissive parenting and no screen time limits as opposed to a completely packed schedule of extra curriculars. Its just one over adjustment after another, whatever the parenting trend this twenty years is. I even had to deal with this on the personal level, where I had to sit my mom down and explained that her constant giving of advice and treating every mistake I made as something that an improvement plan needed to be made for made me feel like she didn't trust me and made me want to hide my mishaps from her. We had a very mature conversation about this, and she has improved. But the reason why this happened was her over-correcting the very neglect she experienced.
