Silly boys
One time I was leaving a friend's place and an older lady with basically no English came up to me and communicated that she was very cold and needed a ride. She pointed to tell me where to go.
I got there and her daughter or granddaughter came out and was like omg her phone died we were worried
And then the older lady said something and the younger lady translated.
"She knew she could trust you because you have pink hair"
I thought it was funny at the time. But when I think back on it I think she was basically saying "you had a visible sign of not vibing with the system I was afraid of"
Be weird. Be colorful. Help random people.
how strange to watch their "capitalist" fantasy begin to crumble. the free market is supposed to shift the best products to the top, right? the reward for good capitalist behavior is maximized profits.
of course it's the groceries but it isn't just the groceries, it's everything. now it is $25 for you to eat at chipotle. you remember when they were famous for their portion sizes (and their food safety issues). you were a hungry college student and could actually-afford to eat there. these days the food is worse and the price is higher - why not just go anywhere else?
you have just a quick question for your pharmacy so you look at their website and even do battle with their chatbot but inevitably the answer isn't there. you try calling customer service. you listen to a long automated message telling you to go online and try the website. you listen to an AI voice named Jan or Kelly as she asks you to state the nature of your request and hems and haws and says i'm sorry, i don't think i'm understanding. you try pressing "0" and saying "speak to an operator" and "talk to a representative" and "live agent". she never connects you. if literally one person spoke to you, you'd have been able to resolve this in approximately 15 minutes. it has now been an hour and Jan/Kelly's server farm is out there somewhere ruining the environment while she fails to do her job.
you watch as more and more corporations choose shady business practices - are caught on camera doing so - and discover that no legal action has been taken. that the company is calling the obvious and deliberate action "a sad accident." you watch people point out that "black friday sales" are literally more expensive than the original price. you watch as someone shows an email that is literally violating consumer safety laws. you watch as someone blatantly commits fraud.
but who are you supposed to call about that? there are no regulations anymore. they're free of that nasty "red tape" republicans hate so much. food is spoiling on the shelves and there is cesium in your shrimp. everywhere you look, the same dedication to the shareholders. everywhere you look, the prices get higher while the product gets worse.
they can keep doing it forever, right! they can just keep doing whatever they want, forever. infinite money glitch.
and the thing is: you were okay to pay a certain amount to watch a movie for the experience (and of course that one moment with nicole kidman). you understand that verizon has always been evil; you weren't expecting a rapturously friendly experience. you came from a family where money was always tight: you have always been trying to "do the right thing". the coupons and the price-matching and going to twenty stores just to find 6 different things.
as an adult: actually, you are okay to spend a little extra if the product is nice, if you are given something wonderful. if it is worth it.
but now the bag is half-empty. now the clothes are ever-thinner. now they release the game half-finished with the attitude of: whatever, you'll buy it. the technology that used to last you 5+ years now falls apart in the second month due to a known manufacturing error that you have to pay to resolve. the gas monopoly quietly installs a new "smart meter" that artificially raises your costs by 300 a month. the trip to disney is not magical; it is expensive and hostile. you are priced out of your own life in order to worship the shareholders.
you do the capitalist thing: you take your business elsewhere.
on tv a reporter blinks in the early light. his face is drawn, grave. "in what some people are calling a recession indicator... another business set to declare bankruptcy today." you watch their logo flash - you actually like what they're selling, and used to be a customer, before they started price gouging. the man turns to the woman on his left. "well, in this new press statement, they say the consumer is to blame."
It always feels bad when walking away. It used to be they were nice. It used to be it felt like they cared. But as prices go up, as attitudes drop... It became too much. They used to spout love. Then the spewed hate. They supported the very system that caused you to go to them. For comfort, for fun.
Walking away hurts. When they were small were they local? When they were new was it cool? But now it is bloated. A whale on the beach, rolled back in the sea, and poisonous from what they picked up on land.
Walking away is like knives to the chest. "Customer loyalty" they cry to workers who do. not. want. to push the newest card/account/reward points. "Loyalty" they call while the features they make are seen as bugs. "Loyalty" they beg while the light shines from dieing eyes.
Where is the loyalty to not do the bare minimum. What happened to caring about customers and workers. What happened to being a business your employees could shop at without breaking the bank.
It is always "never thier fault" - "The customers were stolen" - "no one believes in brand loyalty". But the narrative is never "we cut corners till the only courner left was the one we stood on"

lmao on the edinburgh zoo site it says βthere is a daily penguin parade at 14:15 but it may be cancelled last minute as it is a voulntary parade, we do not coax the penguins with food, and they may not want to go outβ lmao anarchopenguinism
this is the cutest goddamn thing iβve ever heard
I saw the penguin parade. It was a very slow parade, because the pingΓΌinos take their sweet time and arenβt very fast walkers to begin with.
can I volunteer to be a penguin
I feel like the world needs to know the context of the edinburgh zoo penguin parade, becausr Iβve been going there my entire life and I only found out about this the other year.
So a while back (I canβt remember exactly when but I think it was some time around the 40s/50s), a bunch of penguins escaped. A keeper left the gate open so a bunch of penguins justβ¦ followed them. And the people loved it. Look at these adorable birds outside their cage just following that guy around! So they get all the penguins back inside and realise that none of them really ran off, they just followed the keeper and went back inside and crowd thought it was amazing, so why not make it a regular thing? Get enough people there that if one of them goes to make a run for it (which at least one has in the past), they canβt get past the people, and let the ones who want outside have a little wander. So every day, they get a crowd, they open the gate, and whatever penguins want to get out can go, waddle about, squawk at people, and then hop back inside.
Also, one of those penguins is Brigadier Sir Nils Olaf III, Colonel-in-cheif of the Norwegian Kingβs Guard. This isnβt really related to the parade at all, I just love the fact that thereβs a penguin in the Norwegian army
Reblogging with Brigadier Sir Nils Olaf III inspecting his troops.
Carry on β¦
I love everything about this post.
A GOOD POST
A lovely older friend of mine lived in Edinburgh when she was a small child, and regularly attended the penguin parade β as a penguin. That is, she was a small toddler and thus about the right height and speed, and she just waddled along with everyone else who was about 2β high.
So the answer to βcan I volunteer to be a penguinβ is at least occasionally βyes.β
Iβm watching Splash (1984) which is a romcom about a guy who falls in love with a mermaid, and when she chooses a human name she chooses Madison and guy says βthatβs not a real name, but alrightβ which seems to imply that Madison was not a name until at least the 80βs and all girls named Madison are actually named after the mermaid. thought you should know
I think...you might be right
what the fuck
I went to school with a girl named Madison who was born in late 1984, which I guess means her parents were some real early adopter mermaid fuckers
wait fuck I forgot her twin sister's name was Ariel
whale fall
Alternate title is "the city's mother"

saw an elderly woman walking around with a tote bag whose design were the four AO3 fic category squares and she very excitedly asked if i was a reader or a writer bcs nobody else at the con had recognized it, and after telling her that i've been writing fic since fanfic.net, she solemnly nodded and explained that she'd been reading fic since "the days of personal websites" but that she only started writing fanfic when she was 47 and oh my god when i tell you that i genuinely teared up on the spot!!!!! like!!! HELL YEAH???? LITERALLY NEVER TOO OLD TO START WRITING. NEVER TOO OLD TO WRITE AND SHARE YOUR FIC.
her enthusiastic "i'm a very nice and bubbly person, i swear! but i love writing angst and major character death :)" nearly took me the fuck out.
icon. legend. diva. i wish her nothing but a kajillion million comments and kudos. i hope her fic updates crash AO3. i hope she knows i'm promoting her to my personal patron saint of AO3.
i think the angriest ive ever made someone on reddit was when they used an emoji while arguing and i said "What is this tiny yellow picture"
when my shelter cat passes by me, he pauses for a second, and looks up. He is waiting for me to lean down, and touch my hand against his side, so that when he keeps walking, my hand skims across his fur. he doesn't really need attention. he has his own thoughts and plans. but after more than a year of living in our home, he has come to expect a moment of kindness whenever he crosses my path. if I don't do it, he will follow me. "where is your hand?" he asks, with his plaintive and impatient eyes. I give it to him. he bumps against it like a balloon before wandering away. this is a poem to me
This post has gone so much further than I expected it to. This is my sweet cat. His name is Eddie Potato.

"the best way to screw jkr over is by making her characters queer!" actually. The best way to screw jkr over is to stop engaging with the property she still profits off of and read a different fucking book
we're 10 days away from the anniversary of this post breaking my blog, so reblogs are back on! maybe I can get a new blocklist out of this
also, if you decide you REALLY wanna watch the new show/ movies THAT BAD, pirate that shit!!!! piracy is your best friend along with a good vpn!!!! if you wanna buy her books, thrift it! go on ebay or pangobooks or your local library or a thrift store or depop! don't give that wench your money!!!!
I'm gonna hold your hands while I say this: it's not enough.
HP Fandom isn't just a problem because of the direct financial support. It also continues to infuse the IP, and JKR as a result, with cultural capital and social influence. It gives jkr a cultural relevance that means her words are platformed more seriously and more widely than other authors whose works are not infused with this level of sustained popularity. She has said, very plainly, that she (and the people who will fund her future projects) views ALL Fandom action as support.
And also, quite frankly, the last book was published in 2007. Please read a new book.
