one such reviewer gave it a one star because "writings of some emigree who hasn't yet mastered his English well". i am not paraphrasing. i have copy/pasted this directly from the review. she also goes on to list every single bad thing that happens in the story as a sort of... gotcha? "can you BELIEVE this guy wrote THIS?!" yeah it's. it's a story. "references to the african slave trade" it's.... it takes place in.... during..... i'm. HELLO???????

this other person called the book unreadable bcs the MC was "unrelatable" and it's like. damn. you can't shapeshift into an animal navigating between the realms of myth, legend, and politics across the african continent? skill issue. but also sorry you can't relate to a character who's been wronged and abused since birth yet still loved and cherished disabled children who weren't his own to the point where he embarked on a journey to not only save another missing child but to avenge the ones taken from him.

but the fantasy setting isn't european-centric so i get why nothing made sense to them.

also why is it "historical realism" when women get raped in fantasy settings yet "taking it too far" when it's a man, huh. curious.
