Maybe one reason time seems to speed up in adult life is because when your full time job leaves you roughly 5 hours of free time a day plus two days off a week your life turns into a sort of monotony that makes the days blend together and creative pursuits move in slow motion as you can only get to them when other your commitments are done.
When you look back and think damn 2019 wasn’t that long ago where did the time go? Job. Your Job took it.
Tonight’s thoughts as we’re hitting the half way point of pride month.
Yeah you're right. It WOULD be pretty fucked up if you were a swan but you were raised by ducks and you grew up never seeing another swan or even knowing that such a thing as a swan even existed so you just thought you were a duck with something super wrong with it.

Oh easy mistake. Yearning actually rises from the floor and longing hangs from the ceiling
autism tests are so funny. I'm extremely literal most of the time, but people don't tell me that generally, so I'm inclined to answer disagree. because I'm taking the statement too literally
^not my post but same sentiment
TIL Ray Bradbury first titled Fahrenheit 451 “The Fireman”, then called a local fire station to ask what temperature it would take to actually ignite books. The responding firemen placed him on hold and burnt a book, then reported that the heat required was “Fahrenheit 451″.

That’s such a fire fighter thing to do.
“You know what? That’s a good question. I’m gonna put you on hold while I find out”
My dad used to design kitchens at Lowe’s and one day he got a dude from one of the national labs looking to buy a countertop. Dad sent him home with a sample of a quartz-composite countertop to make sure the color will look good with his existing cabinets. The dude asks my dad what the composition of the countertop is and whether it’ll melt if he puts a pot on it (since it’s a composite and not pure stone) and Dad gives him some rough numbers and reassures him that it won’t melt if he puts a hot pan on the counter. The dude comes back with week later without the sample. The dude gives dad a detailed list of the countertops composition, to the nearest hundredth of a percentile, and the exact temperature it melts at, because he took it to his lab and melted it down. tldr, it’s not just firefighters.
Imagine giving someone a sample of the granite you use to make countertops and they come back a few days later just to tell you they fucking dematerialized it
Ok, but this is just, like, what people do if they have access to equipment. We just… put shit in it. Just to see. At this point, I’ll try and hit just about anything with an arc, just to see. I’ll sand and polish anything you’ll let me, if I’m bored enough. If I had a machine that could melt something down and tell me exactly what was in it? I’d be just waiting for parts of my world to become “trash” so I could de-materialize it and turn it into knowledge of what it was.

spent forty-five minutes today helping an 87yo woman who does not own a computer or a cell phone try to set up an email account so that she could then set up a second account in order to access benefits. went with protonmail, because they don't require 2fa, but it turns out that while you can still make a protonmail account without authentication you can no longer use it to create OTHER accounts without it, and the benefits page she needed to get to required both an email and a cell phone to create an account anyway. asked if she wanted to try going in person to see if someone there could help her, and she said that she had, and they'd directed her to the website. she tried signing up with her landline, but of course that didn't work because you can't do SMS authentication that way. finally ended up writing up detailed instructions for how to log in and authenticate her account so she can drive to her severely disabled daughter's house forty minutes away because that's the only person she knows and trusts who has both a cell phone and a computer.
anyway i fucking hate mandatory 2fa and i think the people responsible for it should have to spend a year navigating their lives with no cell phone and no internet access beyond the public library pcs. fuck.
I manually log into my credit union every month because they've got some weird rules about staying active. I check my balance then go to my credit card and manually enter an amount to pay.
Both of them automatically added 2fa last month. Both of them had security questions the month before.
I understand the "more secure" aspect. Right up until you look into actual tech security.
There's a trade school up the street from me, it collects kids from 6 nearby school districts and has classes like culinary arts, building trades, and digital security.
Nobody graduates the digital security class with 2fa activated anywhere where it's optional. I don't have the educational background to explain, but from what I do understand, it's like screwing a padlock latch to the outside of your barn. I could walk up to your barn, unscrew the latch, and not even have to look at the padlock.
2FA is, actually, more secure, notably so, and it's unfortunate that the school you're talking about isn't giving that impression.
But that doesn't change the fact that we're erasing non-digital options that provide essential access, and that requiring 2FA completely excludes users.
And that is unacceptable.
More on my first statement:
Uncover how 2FA works, what it protects against, and its role in modern cybersecurity. Learn why two-factor authentication is a must-have to
The two main weaknesses are (1) using SMS for the authentication is something you can hack/spoof your way around and (2) it doesn't help much with social engineering attacks where the victim is helping the attacker gain access.
For (1), it's still more secure because it requires a more targeted effort. You needed to spoof the specific phone number associated with the person you're trying to hack. For (2), I don't know of any studies showing whether the additional friction of 2FA helps or not.
Both things can be true at once:
As an individual user, chosing to add 2FA increases your security substantially
Requiring it excludes people from essential services and is not acceptable
Companies need to take responsibility for security instead of making it all the end user's problem to the point where it becomes unusable for many.

My wife’s idea of decompressing after the busy holiday was to rearrange every piece of furniture in our home is this an ADHD thing or just a her thing
I’m not complaining the way she’s done it is much better than it was it’s just like how is this your idea of a relaxing weekend
Listen I don't get to decide when the drunk elf that is my executive actually does the functioning but when he does we have a SMALL WINDOW OF TIME before he finds the schnapps again and we're done
yes this exactly
So to me, there are spoons (general energy cost) and carnival tickets (specific energy cost).
Spoons can be used pretty much anywhere.
Carnival tickets are only good for the carnival, and it’s only in town for a limited amount of time.
So like, if I get “kitchen cleaning” carnival tickets, I can’t use that to clean my bedroom, that’s not where the carnival is.

"Oh yeah, we have an outdoor Corgi, he just gets so bored cooped up inside all day. He knows to stay off the road. Don't worry, he's way too smart for coyotes and the neighbor's know to look out when they drive past."
"Us? Oh, of *course* our Dachshund sleeps inside- we just let him out in the morning and make sure he comes back for dinner. He just does his own thing, no worries."
"Um, you know it's not humane to keep a chihuahua confined to an apartment? They're dogs, they're natural predators. They need to experience hunting behaviors or they get depressed. No we don't leash ours, he absolutely hates it, we just let him come and go whenever."
Yall get how fucking stupid that sounds, right? So stop letting your goddamn cats get eaten and attacked and infected and hit by cars
A toddler would probably love full unattended access to the neighborhood too, but we don't do that either, do we
It's 2026, "keep your damn pet in a house or in your view" should not be controversial
