ANOTHER anh re-watch thought: compared to a lot of other similar protagonists the character work w Luke is. really good?
even aside from having literal magic powers he's legitimately very competent.
he's an excellent pilot and marksman & he learned those skills bcos he grew up on a planet full of criminals & giant monsters that want to kill you
the fact that he's quick to pick up new skills obvs indicates that he's a very fast learner but also ties in w the fact that (as we see at the opening act of the film) he spends a lot of time tinkering w various bits of technology and also nerds out about spacecraft so it doesn't feel improbable for him to know a lot of stuff
displays an aptitude for leadership which is set up during the middle act of the film when he comes up w a plan to rescue Leia on the fly & figures out exactly how to talk Han into participating; feels perfectly natural for him to take command of Red squadron after their leader is killed.
doesn't feel like it's just happening for him bcos he's the protagonist its like ah ok he's had this potential all along & now he's finally getting to realise it
i just think its neat!! u see a lot of similar stories where the main characters are just better at everything bcos uhh the script says so.
#But also those magic powers are definitely giving him a boost at all those things. #Like because of how they work without feeling like a script reasoning? #The magic that connects you to every living being in the universe and enhances your reflexes obviously help him. #star wars #It also helps that other people get to do things? #The fact that Han and Leia both get moments to shine and do cool things make him feel less of the special guy? #Like it doesn't feel like the Author is favoring him or that he wins because the script says so cause we see him screw up sure... #BUT also because other characters also have a chance to show off? Like Han gets to do cool smuggler stuff and Leia gets cool rebel stuff.
YEAH that too. wrt the force stuff, the original trilogy does a really good job of setting it up IMO? it's relatively subtly present in ANH and as of ESH Luke has figured out how to do some more stuff with it but is still learning - the telekinesis scene at the beginning of ESH is a top-tier star wars moment, you can really palpably feel the mental process he's going through
& then obviously he goes through his training w Yoda so when as of the beginning of ROTJ he can do a bunch of cool stuff it feels like completely earned character growth
i get why the prequels are different in this regard bcos they're depicting the jedi at Peak Strength whereas Luke is basically having to re-discover an entire martial art but it's not quite as satisfying idk
Do Eridians know they are different colours. I bet Grace's alien kids love finding out what colour they are. It means absolutely nothing to them but they're like :O :O
Some of them think he's making this whole 'colour' thing up to mess with them and try to catch him out by asking again on a different day to prove he's just saying random noises but he's like you are still blue buddy and they're like :O :O
Like if we met an alien species who had extra senses & they said that some humans felt spingly and some humans felt spoingly I bet we'd all want to know if we were spingly or spoingly humans
my controversial opinion is I don’t think Zuko was confused by “my first girlfriend turned into the moon”
he was there during siege of the North. he infiltrated the spirit oasis. he has an uncle who studies spirits and the spirit world. he watched the sky go dark then the moon suddenly reappear like everyone else in the entire world did. and most importantly he watched zhao get eaten by a giant godzilla fish spirit.
his entire life since he saw that beam of blue-white light in the south pole has been ‘this day has already been so goddamn weird’
The only really new information was that that was Sokka’s girlfriend
Important opinion in the tags that I need to have be part of the post:
Also, Iroh was there? He literally watched Sokka make out with the moon spirit. And you want to tell me that a romantic sap like him would not have immediately told Zuko about this romantic tragedy? Please, Zuko has known about this for ages, he just knows that this is not an acceptable situation in which to say “yeah, I know.”
Sokka: “My girlfriend turned into the moon.”
Zuko: “I know.” “Yes.” “She sure did.” “Uh huh.” “Tell me something new.” “Are we still talking about that?” “That’s rough, buddy.”
[image: tags by samwisethebold: #it’s not that he doesn’t get what sokka means #it’s that how on earth do you respond to that]

“being kind takes zero effort” Lies.
Being kind takes enormous effort. Being kind means humbling yourself- it means saying no to your pride- it means forgiving someone instantly- it means putting someone convenience over your own for some time- it means acting as if the universe doesn’t revolve around you. Being kind is hard. Being kind is not butterflies and sickly sweet, half-witted compliments. It’s work. It’s serving others. It’s being silent when you don’t want to. It’s being honest. It’s being gentle. It’s being true even if the other person disagrees. Being kind is one of the hardest things a person can do and we need more of it.
It means standing up to bullies. It means calling out unkind behavior. It means missing sleep because someone needs to talk at midnight.
It means being friends with people when you get nothing, because you know that the other person needs you, even if you don’t need them.
And you know what, years later you might realize you need them too.
uh, source?
Source:
- Yes, child support should start at 6 weeks. The challenge is proving paternity that early. As early as you can prove paternity safely, go for it!
- The Constitution does specifically list birth as the time at which citizenship (not personhood) is established. It would be reasonable to say that the preborn child is a citizen of whatever country his or her mother is a citizen of at least until the child is born. That says nothing about the child’s personhood, because obviously you don’t have to be a citizen to be a person.
- If an insurance company wants to sell policies insuring preborn children, I could see that. But the purpose of life insurance is to replace the income of the person who died. Usually when you buy a life insurance policy for a child, the intent is that you are investing in that policy so the child can have it when they grow up. If you wanted to start that process at 6 weeks, that’s fine - but I would understand the company that says you can’t collect more than x amount before the child turns, say, 18. Perhaps before that point you would collect a lower amount that would help with funeral costs and final medical expenses.
To me, this is a free market issue - if a company wants to offer a policy like this, I see no reason why not! Granted, you would also be inviting investigators to look into your miscarriage whose job would be to prove you caused it so the company wouldn’t have to pay out. I thought we didn’t want women who miscarry to be interrogated?
There are real conversations to be had about what a society looks like when it values human life from conception, but rather than having that conversation y’all try to use it as a gotcha. It’s getting old.

The Ghosts of World War II by Sergey Larenkov
Taking old World War II photos, Russian photographer Sergey Larenkov carefully photoshops them over more recent shots to make the past come alive. Not only do we get to experience places like Berlin, Prague, and Vienna in ways we could have never imagined, more importantly, we are able to appreciate our shared history in a whole new and unbelievably meaningful way.
This is eerily touching.

another thing i appreciate about project hail mary the book is that the happy ending in still under construction. and complicated. I loved the film, but the book doesn't give us a magic perfect human habitat and i LIKE that.
Grace only recently got food that tastes okay. the dome is as comfortable as the eridians could make it, but its not a hyper-realistic recreation of earth. the gravity of Erid hurts grace. there's still a literal wall between him and the people (person) he cares about.
when the question of whether grace wants to go back to earth comes up, its not as simple as 'do you want to stay here with your best friend rocky?' its also "how long can your body handle this?" and "how long will you endure it?" and "do you ever want to have arms around you again?"
"do you ever want to have arms around you again?" wtf 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
Someone should do a comic where Rocky and his family take a road trip through space to get Grace home. (Then he’s not alone for the trip.)
The whole time Rocky’s kids keep asking “are we there yet?”
In an art show in SF.

"painted metal" IM SORRY????
So I came home from work today and there was a kindle addressed to me that I did not remember ordering. I spent the afternoon trying to figure out how I accidentally purchased a kindle from Amazon, and when I came back from hanging out with Catherine, I told my parents, guys, you will not believe what I accidentally ordered for myself.
“Huh,” said Dad very casually. “Did you get charged for it?”
I spent the next five minutes checking my bank account and came back into the living room to announce, “No, I didn’t. Do you think it’s a mistake? But it has my name on it! what does this mean”
It was around the time that I started to sound panicked that Dad confessed to buying it for me (“I didn’t realize the mystery of it would be so terrifying”). Which was very, very sweet and slightly unfortunate because yesterday I purchased a replacement kindle for myself.
So anyway, we now have a family kindle
Me and Mom were talking about the kindle this morning, and she told me about how a few weeks ago, she got into her car only to discover that it had been mysteriously cleaned.
“But who would do this?” she said to my father who said he was sure he had no idea. “A student? A stranger? Someone who broke into my car to steal it but felt bad about how dirty it was? WHO??”
Eventually Dad was like, “Honey. It was clearly me.”
Poor Dad just wants to be a man who expresses his love through silent actions, but his family consists of panicked, suspicious women who apparently are very sure that strangers will ominously do nice things for us
I think strange horrible things should stop befalling my friends
I think strange wonderful things should start befalling my friends
The two types of controversial opinion posts I tend to see online:
"This is just my opinion, so feel free to disagree- I mean, I don't understand every angle of the situation and I'm not trying to be judgemental- you do you and all that. Sorry if this is an unpopular opinion- I'm open to discussion about this topic! It's just... I think murder is bad."
"LISTEN UP!!! I am TIRED of letting people get away with being EVIL PIECES OF GARBAGE! OKAY?! People who do this evil thing need to be PUBLICALLY EXECUTED! If you do this, you aren't even human! I hope your kids get put in a saw trap! I hope your dog divorces you! I hope your wife gets hit by a car! What's the evil thing? Putting onions on your cheeseburger, OBVIOUSLY!"

Happy Star Wars Day! I’ve decided to make my Skywalker comic into one easily rebloggable post.
Here’s a bonus page in honor of May 4th!
Project Hail Mary Theory:
I have only read the book, not seen the movie, but SPOILERS:
I think the reason Grace lived while the others died was because the drugs used to make him forget saved his life.
