I don’t think you guys get it, you guys don’t see the potential, the many many possibilities, the many MANY ways you could portray these two when it comes to their relationship and who they are as people. The way you can just go fucking ham and make them both as messy as possible because we KNOW these are two messy characters.
They could love each other, they could hate each other. They could be jealous of each other. They could want the other so badly but the fear, self loathing, and the difficulty of taking accountability holds them back. Max could envy how much of a loving home and family Grace has, how unlike him, she actually has a life after high school, how she’ll go on to actually be something like a successful lawyer or a preacher. Grace could envy how Max has the power to do whatever he wants, he can make mistakes and fuck up and everyone will forgive him for it but she can’t. How he has followers and the whole town loves him meanwhile the whole town hates her. Max could deep down blame Grace for making him soft, for making him want to let his guard down more and leave himself open to be hurt. He can want her and does want her, but he’s terrified that she’ll lead to his downfall, seeing her as a threat to his masculinity. Or maybe he’s frustrated, maybe he pushes too much and can’t understand why she thinks he’s trying to “corrupt” her. He cares about her, and her thinking that he just has bad intentions with her stings. Maybe that’s how Grace feels. Maybe once she discovers that he’s more than just a mean jock, what if it was all a ploy to get into her pants and make her someone she’s not, she’s terrified to actually make a move with him because what if he just drops her once he gets what he wants out of her and she’s left alone. Maybe they both desperately want the other to stop being scared and to just talk like an actual person for ONE damn second without the walls and masks on but neither of them can actually do it. Maybe they don’t understand the other at all, but they want to, oh how they want to, but not understanding the other makes them even more angry. They could lash out at each other, say the meanest things they can think of in a moment where someone hit a nerve, but then regret it, or not regret it. Maybe Grace just wants a no strings attached thing, maybe she also wants to use Max without the consequences or anyone knowing of the fact that she’s not the pure girl she paints herself out to be. Maybe Max likes that, maybe he doesn’t. Maybe Grace is the only person whom Max wants to have pick at his flaws and tear him down for who he really is, maybe she’s the LAST person he would want to do that to him. Maybe Grace hates the fact that Max is the only one who tolerates her, maybe she doesn’t. Maybe they both think they’re incapable of love, maybe they both think the OTHER is incapable of love. Maybe they used to be childhood friends but they hate what the other turned into. Maybe they miscommunicate, maybe they don’t. This post is getting long but you get the point. I’m only scratching the tip of the iceberg of the things you can do with these two characters. I’m very normal about them.
